Monday's Music Moves Me

Happy Birthday Mr. President!

Begin playing at :40 to skip the intro

Thank you for including me in your Monday, kittens & dawgs! ? It’s great to be back as co-host of the best dance party in Blogosphere with the “Monday’s Music Moves Me” gals! Thank you, XmasDolly, Stacy, and Colette for having me back after a long hiatus.

Today’s theme is a “freebie pick” and I invite you to hit the dance floor.

In honor of President’s Day and for the two presidents this holiday was originally created for, I’d like to share with you a few songs written about George Washington and Abraham Lincoln.

For George Washington’s inauguration “Hail, Columbia!” but what I found interesting is this song was our country’s first national anthem which was replaced in 1931 when it was replaced by the “Star Spangled Banner”.

SchooHouse Rock prompted learning through mewsic. I remember when this song aired on public TV.

Abraham Lincoln led the nation during a turbulent era. Google provided a few interesting songs about the man and the below song (and a few others) at Music Weird blog.

“We Are Coming Father Abraham” was written in support of Lincoln and the Civil War; performed by the Gettysburg College Singers.

I stumbled upon this animation that teaches kids about the Emancipation Proclamation of 1863. Setting history facts to mewsic is a great way to learn and it’s so much fun!

Stacy, thank you for dancing over. There’s nothing like starting the week off with a mewsic party and I’m delighted to co-host with you and all the 4M ladies – you gals are the best!

John, you know what come to think of it Schoolhouse Rock was on one of the major networks. I guess it must have moved to PBS. Hmmm, oh well maybe if I get super curious then I’ll look into it. 🙂

Thank you for sharing these wonderful selections!
All but Marilyn’s performance were new to me.

Lisa, I figured all of these mewsic vids will be new to most people, except for Marilyn Monroe and maybe the one by School House Rock. I appreciate you hopping over for a President’s Day dance!

Ahhh yes! I just learned that it was Presidents Day today. And I just watched that piece about President Lincoln. He must have been quite a man.

These are very good selections Cathy! Hope you are rested from the weekend and having a good Monday. *HUGS*

Colette, Many of our early founder fathers were awesome men. Somewhere along the way, the hearts of men changed. Yesterday was rough for me. I woke with an enormous sinus headache accompanied by dizziness and fatigue. I started feeling normal around bedtime. Plus, DH was home too. Now, it’s time to play catch up! 🙂

I agree Cathy. I’ve often said, if it was the time to fight for this country to make it America in this day and age, It perhaps would not happen with so many in this country today, not understanding the idea of loyalty, pride and being sovereign.

I am glad you began to feel better and I hope that has continued. I’ll keep you in prayers. *HUGS*

Not sure about that “Hail Columbia” song. Melodically it reminds me of something the Nazis might have sung.

That Marilyn performance was a classic, but definitely one of the weird moments of American history.

Lee, I really didn’t care for “Hail Columbia”, either and my thoughts were similar to yours. It definitely doesn’t inspire a lot of warm patriotic feelings when I hear it and am glad “The Star Spangled Banner” replaced it. I’m can’t recall now who came up with this bright idea of letting Monroe sing for the JFK but the time was different and this sort of stuff more acceptable. I always felt sorry for Jackie. I don’t know how she put up with stuff like this.

You have President’s Day and we have Family Day. I love Johnny Horton but not sure about the others…except the no more Kings…I remembered that from when I was a kid. As for Monroe, Jackie Kennedy had so much class for not showing up to this Birthday gathering. Poor Monroe was over her head when she went with the 2 Kennedy brothers and ended in her life because, yup, I do believe she was murdered.

Birgit, It’s amazing how some gals get tangled up with the wrong guys and the wrong guys come from all walks of life. It floors me to think how some men treated their wives by having extramarital affairs then and now. I know women do the same thing but it seems the past men (not all) were horribly bad for cheating and acted like it was normal. Of course, I’m drawing a lot of my speculations from TV shows and movies. I was too young to remember a lot about that decade. I think Monroe was murdered, too.

Happy President’s Day!! Good choice with Marilyn singing to JFK. It is nice to come here and hear all sorts of music, all I listen to at home is Sinatra because I am too lazy to change the CD.

    • Cathy Kennedy

Ellen, you can use iHeart Radio or Spotify online to listen to mewsic for free if you don’t want to change out your CD. lol I have most of my mewsic on my iPad so I just shuffle the playlist and listen but when that gets tiring I stream mewsic. There’s a lot of options for enjoying mewsic these days. 🙂

I’m impressed that you were able to find so many songs about our national heroes. God love Washington and Lincoln. That’s what we need back in the White House!

    • Cathy Kennedy

Joyce, It’s amazing what Google can find! I’d surely couldn’t come up with these without a little help. lol How did we make it without the Internet and search engines? Oh yeah, we used the library! lol

    Hi, Cathy!

I’m up early and joining you for some tuneage of a different sort as we observe President’s Day aka Presidents’ Day, Washington’s Birthday and Washington’s and Lincoln’s Birthday That first video which shows the high point of JFK’s birthday party with special guest Marilyn Monroe introduced by Rat Packer Peter Lawford, is one that I have watched many times over the years. It was the Mad Men era and presidential swagger was at its peak. My mother hated Marilyn, believing that she had slept her way to fame and fortune, but I have always admired her acting and her singing talent.

I learned a lot through this post. I was not familiar with the songs “Hail, Columbia!,” “No More Kings, Johnny Horton’s “Young Abe Lincoln Make a Tall, Tall Man,” “We Are Coming Father Abraham” or the animated short film “Emancipation Proclamation Hoedown.” I enjoyed listening to them and reading the lyrics.

I need to remember that today is a postal holiday so that I don’t make the long trek down to the mailbox for nothing. 🙂 Thank you for this interesting, educational and historically valuable post, dear friend Cathy. Happy President’s Day to you and have a wonderful week ahead!

      Tom,

I appreciate you joining me first thing this morning. I slept in since DH if off for President’s Day. Unfortunately, I woke with a bad allergy flare up – headache, pressure, congestion,… Ugh! I hate allergies!! I enjoy the old Marilyn Monroe flicks. There were and still a lot of actresses who manipulated their way to fame but Marilyn did have talent and she was bombshell! Every time I think of Marilyn Monroe I think of my childhood best friend’s mom. She imitated the way Marilyn Monroe spoke and moved her lips. We thought it was a gas. lol Thanks for visiting. Have a good afternoon, my friend!
