Wayback Wednesdays…1993

Angela is our beautiful, expecting Mama hostess has appointed me as her side-kick for this mid-week fun WAYBACK WEDNESDAY.  Thanks!  Today, we’re going to travel back in time.

Today, we’re going back…way back into time to 1993. That is a whole lot of years ago. Many things I’ve forgotten from 18 years ago but my memory instantly registers these frozen moments in times:

  • We bought a swing set for our daughters.
  • I was pregnant with our third and last child.
  • We began homeschooling our daughters (ages 5 and 3).
  • I celebrated my 32nd birthday.

However, I’ll  never forget the freakish March event which hit headlines all across the country and was the talk for days and for years to come. We had just bought the girls a swing set with plans to put it together with the weather breaking when out of nowhere… a record-breaking snow storm hit much of the eastern United States.  Knoxville got a whopping two feet of snow. At the same time, we broke a record for coldest temperature in history for our area plummeting to 22 degrees below zero.

We  woke the next morning to find our entire neighborhood as a picturesque winter wonderland. During the stillness of the night, evergreens topped quietly and landing effortless against our home.  Every tree branch and bush and plant piled high with piles of snow. The dense snow muffled all city sounds. It felt surreal.

The city came to a halt!  They weren’t equipped to handle the aftermath of such a huge snow fall. Mind you, this was before the day they routinely went out to pre-treat the roads.  In fact, the streets in our subdivision did not get cleared for several days.

I recall my husband calling the city after being stranded at home for the entire weekend and having missed two days of work…

“When are you going to send a truck to clear our backstreets,” My husband asked.

The city official said, “Sir, I’m afraid we can’t get our trucks out there?”

“Why not? Don’t you have chains?”

“No, sir. We never had a need for chains before…now.  We’re just waiting on Mother Nature to lend us a hand.”

My husband ALWAYS insists on buying chains for our vehicles.  We grew up in rural West Virginia and know the value of these for getting around, but here in the big-little town of Knoxville the city crew did not own such a thing. Now, that’s what I call prepared NOT!

Despite the aggravation, we adult felt over the late wintry blast of ’93 it did not seem to affect little ones.

March 1993 DD#1 scoots down front yard.
March 1993 DD#2 follows the lead.
DH built snowman for his little darlings. Girls hugging Frosty, except it looks like DD#1 is biting him.

The Blizzard of ’93 will live forever in our minds and the minds of our two little girls who’ll remember that time, as the day the world stopped just a moment for them.

    I’m a new follower, too. 🙂

I think snow is absolutely beautiful. We got snow off and on when I was a little girl in South Carolina, but I didn’t get my first white Christmas (that I know of!) until we moved here to the Texas Gulf Coast. It snowed Christmas Eve 2004.
