Thursday Art Date

Two pencil sketches of old #art masters’ paintings

Last month I eased my way back into blogging more than a once a week.  It helped to combine Wednesday and Thursday posts into one but now I ready to wing it….I hope.

This week’s prompt is The Old Masters. For a long time I wanted to try sketching the Mona Lisa. She’s not a dead ringer and I hope Leonardo  daVinci isn’t rolling in his grave too badly but I had fun trying my hand drawing her.

I had a  lot of fun sketching Mona Lisa, so much so I decided to try to replicate another Old Master’s work. This time I picked the Girl with Pearl Earrings by the Dutch painter, Johannes Vermeer.

I think I came a little closer duplicating Vermeer’s work than I did with da Vinci’s or at least in my eye.  What do you think?  Both drawings will be great fun to repose using the Procreate app another time to add color. I’m not comfortable to apply it directly to my original work yet.

Thanks for stopping in with your morning coffee for a peek at my latest illustration and …oh yeah, thanks for not spilling it on my artwork. 😉 I’m heading over to Rain’s Garden to browse through the gallery of artistry and you’re welcome to follow along!

Have a doodletastic day and I hope you’ll join me tomorrow for my first Friday Sillies edition in a long while, my darling friends! X💋X💋, Cathy

I thought this might put a smile on your face while keeping with this week’s art theme

You did an excellent job on both very famous paintings. One knows which ones you used to create your own drawings. The Mona Lisa is smiling more in yours than in the original. Same with Vermeer”s work. To be honest, I was surprised at how well you did..I doubt I could have captured what you did. Pat yourself on the back!

      Monica,

I’m happy you recognized my attempt to capture two of the Old Masters’ classic works. 🙂 Snoopy makes the world smile. We need more of Snoopy to bring peace to our planet, don’t you agree?

I like both your sketches. The Vermeer is beautiful and I think you channeled Rain and a few others when you created her. I had to laugh at your Mona. Not because of the drawing, but because I loved what you did with her hair. This was wonderful and I truly enjoyed seeing both of these. I think you are incredibly talented.

      Elizabeth,

Hey, it’s ok to laugh. Mona Lisa’s hair is a bit wavier than the original and I forgot to sketch her the hair dressing she wore. The image I actually used wasn’t the best but when I clicked on the one I shared after reading your comment I could see it a lot better. When I bring her to living color then I’ll have to make this adjustment to my illustration. Thanks for your words of hope. I appreciate them so much! 😉

When i was in school and took art, we had to try to do a self-portrait, and i can assure you that your Mona Lisa looks more like her than my attempt looks like me. Much more. My hat is off to you for even trying!

    • Cathy Kennedy

      Mimi,

I’m afraid to attempt a self-portrait. I’m sure I won’t be able to draw myself without cringing but I may attempt it before the year is over. Thanks for your lovely praises and visit, dearie!

You did a really good jo with the Vermeer, and I like how you added Snoopy to Van Gogh’s “Starry Night.” I think you relate better to the Dutch/Flemish school…

    • Cathy Kennedy

      John,

I’m not sure that I related more with Vermeer’s style or if I was just more comfortable tackling this Master’s replicate. It was great fun tod regardless the reason. Thanks for visiting!

Both are good … I think Mona Lisa will look more like herself once you add color … but I do agree, the Girl with the Pearl Earrings is a better likeness to the original art. Fun, trying to recreate “Old Masters” art, right? Quite a challenge … but you killed it with the VanGogh and Snoopy!!! What is the Friday Sillies … sounds like fun and even something I would like to try when (and if)I can squeeze it in to my busy life. Busy, you ask? No, but Yes … I don’t know what the heck I do, but I always seem to be running out of time. Covid 19 life is very confusing 🙂 Stay well, Cathy …

      Andrea,

I think when I colorize Mona Lisa I’ll have a chance to redo her facial features and hair to get her a little closer to daVinci’s masterpiece or at least I shall try. I thoroughly this week’s challenge and surprised myself at what I was able to pull off. Oh, dear I can relate to your kind of busy. I find I’m like that some days, too. LOL

I agree the Vermeer copy looks more like the original. Your Mona Lisa looks more like a modern young lady. I sure can’t draw like that but two of my daughters can. Wonderful talent.

      Lee,

You’re right, my Mona Lisa favors a more modern woman. I admire artist who nail portraits precisely. It must be wonderful to be that skilled. Thanks for visiting, my friend!

  • Valerie-Jael

The van Gogh Snoopy made me laugh, thanks. I love your da Vinci and the Vermeer, and the Vermeer is my fave, too. Your drawing is really good! Have a wonderful week, take care and stay safe, hugs, Valerie

      Valerie,

Snoopy always puts a smile on my face. 😀 Thanks for your kind words of encouragement. It’s a joy to belong to a wonderful artsy community. Have a doodletastic day, my dear!

    Hi, Cathy!

Happy Thursday Art Date with Rain, dear friend!

I’d say you did a fine job of rendering these art portraits of the Old Masters, especially the Girl with Pearl Earrings. You captured the expression on her face nicely. That Snoopy illustration reminds me of a funny moment that took place a few years ago when Mrs. Shady and I were traveling. We were sitting in a crowded airport. Mrs. S. brought along her bag (purse) decorated with that Vincent van Gogh painting The Starry Night. As we sat waiting to board our plane, she had her suitcase in front of her legs and asked me to keep her Starry Night purse in front of my legs. A while later a little girl seated across from us spotted the purse, looked up at me and said, “I Like your bag.” 🙂

Yessum, I look forward to joining you tamale for your Friday Sillies. (Glad you saw my email. Thanks for replying. No to BRP. Unfortunately it rained all day Saturday, the day we had planned to go there.) Enjoy your Thursday, dear friend Cathy!

      Tom,

Kids are so cute. 🙂 Working on these two Old Masters’ replicates was a challenge. I’ll have to try capturing a more true likeness to the Mona Lisa another time, as I’m determined to purrfect…okay make better this skill set. Ahh, sorry to hear y’all didn’t get a chance to drive the BRP. Sometimes rainy conditions offer a moody drive, especially if it’s foggy. That is quite the experience sometimes with the dense gray mist rolling in across the road like ocean waves. Just keep in mind, it makes for really tricky driving conditions if it’s after dark. I’ll see ya tomorrow, my friend. Thanks for joining me today!
