Thursday Two Questions

Thursday Thoughts: Jumbled mess jammed pack jelly-free donut post

This week has been a jumbled up mess with the MLK holiday. Don’t get me wrong, I loved having the long weekend with DH, but at the same time it  threw my schedule off. *sigh* Oh well…today I will jump through hoops to join a few of my daily memes into one jammed pack post.

Let’s jolt awake this morning, so grab a cup…here’s the morning joe…and did you bring the jelly donuts? You didn’t! Oh well, we’ll have to rough this Thursday Thoughts’ chat!

For my Tuesday Talk Time session…a long time coming opportunity made itself available. I I have wanted to capture raindrops on anything. After last week’s heavy thunderstorms a small prickly bush provided the perfect chance for me to seize such a shot with my iPhone.

Raindrops in the morn

The camera in my iPhone5s is kinda impressive, is it not? Just look at the detail of each raindrop! I am all smiles now and can’t wait to get other similar shots. Interestingly, after I snapped the first picture I spotted this…

Lost

It was odd to find this splash of color near the prickly bush on the edge of our driveway.  I guess one of the kids in the neighborhood went wild, shooting  the ball out of control landing it precisely in this spot for me to find. There it laid, lost, and ready for me to photograph.

The next several days forecast is calling for cold weather. I thought it would be great to make a kettle of soup, to knock the winter chill off.  I took the best ideas from two recipes and came up with my version.

Split Pea & Ham
6-cups of water
2-cups of chicken broth
1-pound of split peas
2-med potatoes, diced
3-carrots, sliced
1-cup of diced sweet yellow onions
1-pound of ham, cubed
½-tsp. oregano
1 ½ tsp. salt
1-tsp. black pepper
¼ – tsp. garlic powder
In 8-quart stockpot add all ingredients over medium heat, bring to a boil and then simmer. Cook until peas and veggies are tender, about 1½ hours. I kept lid loosely on pot, as it tended to boil over when seated securely.
Be sure to make a fresh pan of cornbread to go with this recipe. The two go well together!

Like I said in the beginning, my schedule is off. Since, I did not get to hook up with my fellow blogger buds on Tuesday, then why not follow me to Les’s place at Time Out For Mom for Tuesday Coffee Chat. Hey, we need a java chat break every day of the week, don’t you think? Yeah, even if there are no jelly donuts.

This week’s prompt is to complete the following…

“I would like to see ____________ trend disappear in 2014.”

I think I’m a hermit sometimes. My knowledge of what is in and what is out doesn’t apply. But, one thing I would love to see disappear forever is the dirty hair look. I know this isn’t what most people are striving for but every time I see someone who uses a hair straightening iron then their hair appears stringy and filthy. How can anyone think that looks good? This is a style many women of all ages sport and even some men. There are a few local anchor hosts wearing their hair like this and I am like, “Hello, hasn’t anyone told you that looks awful?”

There are a few other things I would love to see disappear this year. I wouldn’t call them trends, though. One is profanity. Cursing seems to be a second language and I truly feel that it degrades the person’s image. I hate to hear swear words every other word in someone’s dialogue. The worse offender of all, in my opinion, is the F-word. I would love to see it removed from people’s vocabulary.

Maybe, Patrice will have some jelly donuts. Let’s mosey over to Chats on the farmhouse porch to see what this week’s discussions are!
 Everyday Ruralty
1. How many seed catalogs have arrived at you home?I can only remember one crossing my hand since the New Year.

2.  Will you be learning to do something new this year? Nope, I’m not planning on learning anything new. But, who knows what new lessons I might pick up.

3. How many pair of boot do you own?(This can include casual, dressy, hiking, farm, riding, snow, or any other kind of boot.)Only one pair of cowgirl boots & a pair of hiking boots.

4. Valentine’s Day is just around the corner. There are decorations in the stores. Do you have anything planned for Valentine’s Day? The only thing I have planned is to make DH a hand-stamped card and home-made cinnamon rolls, since I didn’t get to make them at Christmas like I wanted.

5. Please tell me your favorite breeds of dogs. If you don’t like dogs, tell me something about a favorite animal. (Please. 🙂Maybe… a labrador, especially a labrador puppy. They are just so cute! That’s one of my favorite things about getting the LL Bean catalog is that they always use labrador puppies in their catalog layouts.

My favorite kind of java is a latte… And my favorite jelly donut is sugar glazed with raspberry filling!

In fact, I want to go jump in my car and head over to the nearest Dunkin’ Donuts for some.

It seems like I do hear more profanity now than in the past… I don’t like how trashy it sounds.

Thanks for linking to the letter “J”.

    A+

I think cinnamon rolls for Valentine’s Day are a great idea. I also like labs. For some reason, it didn’t cross my mind when I wrote the dog question. I have met many labs and they are such gentle dogs.

  • Suzanne McClendon

I had another seed catalog come in yesterday, so now I have three here on my desk and another that wandered off somewhere. 🙂

One thing that I want to learn to do that I forgot to put on my post is wood turning. I got a free DVD from a company about making ink pens using wood and I’m rarin’ to go!

Labs are adorable and sweet doggies. 🙂 I hope that you enjoy your Valentine’s Day. Have a great weekend!

Hi Cathy, I didn’t see your link, maybe you didn’t see the post. I will link it for you.
    1) I like expresso usually, but a dry cappuccino is my favorite!
    2) I don’t like jelly donuts. When I was a kid, I just would die for those confectioner sugar coated donuts, I don’t know why they used to be like heaven to me. I don’t eat them anymore…weird

Mmmhmm, split pea soup… with all that cold I think I will make a soup. Soon.

Hm, I don’t know, but after I use my straightening iron, my hair does not look dirty. Maybe I’m doing something wrong 😉

  • Rory Bore

ugh – the grunge look resurfaces in hair! yuck. isn’t that the last part of you that you want to look dirty? And what if the rest of you is dressed up? that’s an unbalanced look. Unless you are actually homeless, or Rastafarian – there’s no excuse. At least learn how to do an updo if you didn’t have to wash.

What a great shot!! No way I could capture that with my camera phone – i have an iPhone 4, but I don’t think it could have picked up the water droplet detail. My Canon could, but I don’t exactly have that in my back pocket most times.

4 completely different seasons calls for many boots. that’s all I will say there. I know there are at least 4 in my front hall right now. And that’s just winter.

  • Wandering Wren

Can I pass on the soup for a few weeks? It is so blinking hot I know you’ll understand :)! I am worried about the word ‘blinking’ but hope it will be seen as a cute Aussie’ism to add emphasis to the fact that we are H O T, I have no energy to split my peas…haha !!! I have stored away the recipe as it looks perfect for winter.
I am really impressed with your Iphone 5 photos I am hoping to upgrade very soon myself.

    I love split pea soup!!
As for a long weekend and Monday Holiday, I remember those days when working and I came to the conclusion, even having a Monday off, it messes the whole week up and the 4 day week seems 2 weeks long!!! LOL
