Maine Vacation 2022

Maine Vacation 2022, Part 8

Lake Winnipesaukee

Last time I mentioned that we would get up before the chickens.  On our 4th morning, we departed southern Maine heading for Rangeley in phase two of our vacation.  Before we get to our destination, our plans included marking off another long overdue spot from our wish list.

Our route took us through New Hampshire. We saw Lake Winnipesaukee.  I didn’t see Dr. Marvin or Bob anywhere but I knew from the movie, What About Bob?, that it was a large lake and seeing it in person clarified it. WOW, beautiful scenery and another beautiful day in store for us!  This wasn’t on our to-dos this time.  It was just one of those happy coincidences.  One of the places we were aiming for on this morning was Polly’s Pancake House in Syrup Hill, New Hampshire.

We read about how good breakfast was at Polly’s for years.  I worried our timing to dine there might be a problem with the onset of autumn in New England.  Some fall colors were on display but not enough in my opinion to warrant a lot of traffic but I’d been wrong about these things in our area. Of course, when you make vacation plans, book your rooms, …. you don’t always know if Mother Nature will cooperate. Thankfully early on this Monday we found the dining room with only a handful of people. Yahoo!

We were seated immediately with a menu in hand.  Although, I knew Polly’s had been around for a long time, I didn’t know Polly’s has been serving pancakes since 1938.  That’s the year my daddy was born. The waitress asked if we wanted coffee.  Of course we did! Dashing away, she returned soon with two cups of black coffee.

We sipped on our coffee looking over the menu.  Again, we knew what we wanted beforehand.  DH placed our order.  I loved the quaint log cabin style dining room and the sunny gorgeous view outside my window made everything feel perfect!

The restaurant has an open floor design, the area where they sell souvenirs was visible from our table.  We wondered over to save a little time. I knew I wanted to get something from Polly’s.  DH helped me to pick these two magnets for me.

DH also got me a hooded sweatshirt from Polly’s. 🙂

In no time our breakfast arrived.  This time I managed to not take a bite of anything before snapping a picture.  DH had the blueberry pancakes with pure maple syrup and applewood smoked sausage and I had the applewood smoked ham omelette and home-fries.  We shared an order of corn beef hash.

Mmm, everything was d-e-e-e-lious! The pancakes were especially fantastic.  I don’t have their recipe but it seems they use some corn mill in their batter.  It wasn’t all flour.  I really liked their version quite a bit which prompted me to go in search for the recipe online and thankfully I found it published from 2013 at parade.com. Awesome, right?!

With our tummies filled, we were ready to hit the road for our next destination of the day, The Mount Washington Cog Railway.  The drive was little more than half an hour away and we’re cutting things dangerously close to our ticket departure time.  Will we make it? You’ll have to check back next Wednesday as I continue my Maine photo series. 😉

Like most folks in the USA, I’m busy with Thanksgiving preparations.  I’m not sure how much time I have to spare in Blogosphere but I’ll do my best to make a few rounds.  I truly appreciate all of my dear, sweet friends.  It’s you that keeps my head in this thing called blogging.  Each of you add a ray of sunshine to my day.  Thank you for your friendship!

Next time on CAAC I open the early link up for 4M on Sunday but I don’t actually share my music selections until Monday where you’ll find me boogieing me to songs from the upcoming theme prompt! Have a wild and wonderful day! X💋X💋, Cathy

Check out these mid-week connections hosted by a few of my good friends…. Sandee, Natasha, & Wordless Wednesday

      Stippie & Peachy,

It is a pretty place. I like the charm of the rustic style building and it sat on a little hill with a nice view of the surrounding mountains. It was a glorious day!

      Ellen,

We don’t eat breakfast out in our area too often but when we do if we order plain pancakes with maple syrup. I’m going to make that recipe I found but I don’t know when yet. I’m really ready for some of Polly’s pancakes now!

    Hi, Cathy!

Happy Wild, Wacky and Almost Wordless Wednesday, dear friend!

I’m eager to join you and DH on the next exciting leg of your Maine getaway which this time include a slice of New Hampshire!

Yessum, you guys awoke early to begin another day blessed with blue skies. That view of Lake Winnipesaukee in New Hampshire is spectacular. You and DH are like me. I wouldn’t mind having pancakes for breakfast every day of my life. That’s how much I love them. Sign me up for Polly’s Pancake Parlor in Sugar Hill! Gosh, you guys were lucky that such a popular eatery wasn’t overflowing with people requiring a long wait to get in. You were seated immediately. Black coffee’s just my style, too, and I’ll bet a place like that serves great coffee. What a wonderful view from the window at your table, Cathy. It’s like an artist’s composition – red flowers in the foreground and a blue, sunny sky rising from a wooded hillside in the distance. These are the moments you wish could last forever. Along with your happy memories, you brought back tangible gift items to remind you of that delightful morning at Polly’s. I can imagine how good DH’s blueberry pancakes tasted smothered in pure maple syrup. I’m going to show their pancake recipe to Mrs. Shady and ask her to whip us up a batch.Have you used their recipe since you got home? Whenever you do, DH will be in 7th heaven.

This was most enjoyable, Cathy. I look forward to the next installment and the song selections on 4M day. It will be hard to top The Pierces, a duo that quickly became one of my favorite acts and certainly one of the most exciting musical discoveries in recent years. Cathy, you know that I am very thankful for your friendship as well. I wish you and your whole family a safe, happy and blessed Thanksgiving!

      Tom,

If the truth be told, we can eat pancakes everyday for breakfast, too. I can’t wait to try the recipe I found for Polly’s pancakes. I’ll be sure to report back if it tastes as good as what we had in the restaurant. 🙂
