Monday's Music Moves Me

The Pierces

Awww Mondays

This week on the Monday’s Music Moves Me dance floor we are boogieing to whatever music moves you with our special co-hostess, Sandee from Comedy Plus. Are you ready to get this party going?

On the weekends, we enjoy unwinding in front of the boob tube. That’s funny to say since they no longer use tubes in modern high definition televisions but anyway, we like binging our favorite TV shows. Over the summer, we began watching Pretty Little Liars original series. The artists singing the opening theme, Secret, piqued my curiosity.

The Pierces is a LA based band with sisters Allison and Catherine. Their style is a reflection of the type of music that played a big part in their upbringing from the 60s and 70s. I can’t believe I haven’t heard of these gals before now. They have beautiful voices and genuine talent. I borrowed from The Pierces’ YT the playlist of songs from one of their first albums, You & I.

Tracks: 1. You’ll Be Mine 2. It Will Not Be Forgotten 3. Love You More 4. We Are Stars 5. Glorious 6. The Good Samaritan 7. Kissing You Goodbye 8. Close My Eyes 9. Space & Time 10. Drag You Down 11. I Put Your Records On

Days later after listening to this album in its entirety DH spotted it on sale at iTunes. He commented on it being their best album which I totally agree with and he asked me if I wanted to buy it. Naturally, I said yes.

Here’s something interesting I totally forgot.  While in Bar Harbor, our New England daughter DD#2 reminded me when she worked in downtown Knoxville, Lucy Hale’s (Aria from Pretty Little Liars) real sister worked with her who was a student at UT.  I remembered as soon as she told me but I didn’t pay it any mind at the time because we were into the series. Just a little something fun to throw at you.

This is a music linky party.  Your co-hostess are StacyAlana, and Me.   Every other week we have a suggested music theme (see weekly prompts here) to build your song set around and all participants share YouTube or Vimeo videos for our music enthusiasts.  Failure to meet this basic guideline puts your URL in danger of being removed or labeled – NO MUSIC.

I love the little chicks on the pussy cat…so sweet. These gals are really different and I like that. I, unfortunately, couldn’t hear the wjole thing because the video would not work after track 5 but they are quite eclectic.
Have a wonderful Thanksgiving and I wish you and your family all the best!

    Hi, Cathy!

Happy Paw-some 4M Monday, dear friend! I hope you and DH had a nice weekend.

Awww,,, I just wanna smooch those cute little peeps. That picture proves there’s strength in numbers. The kitty doesn’t know what to make of the situation.

This is the first time I am seeing and hearing the Los Angeles duo The Pierces – sisters Allison and Catherine Pierce. The girls are credited with a variety of musical styles including psych-rock, psych-pop and psych-folk. The song “Secret,” widely known (as you mentioned) as the theme from the TV series Pretty Little Liars, was first released on their 2007 folk rock & indie pop album Thirteen Tales of Love and Revenge. Along with “Three Wishes,” “Secret” was used in an episode of another TV series, Gossip Girl. The sibs made a cameo appearance on that series and the music video you posted was included on the season 1 DVD. The first thing I noticed as the lead vocal began on “Secret” is the “vintage voice” effect that makes her voice sound as if it is coming from an antique phonograph or radio. Her voice gets right inside your head and stays there throughout. The scenario that plays out in the video is clever and amusing.

As much as I like “Secret,” I like the folk-rock songs on You & I a whole lot more. Released in the UK (and apparently not the in U.S.) in 2011, You & I placed in the top 5 on the UK album chart. Two singles from the album, “You’ll Be Mine” and “Glorious,” reached the UK chart, with “You’ll Be Mine,” the higher performing of the two, cracking the top 50. “You’ll Be Mine” is a tremendous song combined with a surreal video I love both. If I didn’t know better, I’d swear that the song is a long lost relic from the flower power era of the late 60s and early 70s. The video reinforces the illusion. Dressed as they are in the vid, the girls look like they’re on their way to Woodstock. The scenes of them twirling and spinning coincide with the lyrics:

Prick your finger on a spinning wheel
    But don’t make a sound
A drop of blood and now you’re taken for all time
With a kiss you will awaken and you’ll be mine

… making me think that The Pierces were influenced by witchy woman Stevie Nicks. I’m stuck here for the last 15 minutes raving about “You’ll Be Mine” because it is simply sensational. I like everything about the song and the video. You’re right, Cathy. Those girls really do have beautiful voices and talent.

“It Will No Be Forgotten” is another very strong song and video, with images that imply magic and witchcraft. I can definitely see and hear the Fleetwood Mac/Stevie Nicks influence. The harmony achieved by the sisters is incredible. They’re for real! I’ll tell you right now, I’m gonna replay these songs and videos time and time again. “Love You More” is another excellent song and video. I’m running out of superlatives. Album reviews for You & I draw comparisons to The Bangles, “California Dreamin” (Mamas & Papas) and to dark David Lynch productions. “We Are Stars’ is a mesmerizing song and video. “Glorious” is another terrific song, and the vid looks like a scene from the movie Beyond The Valley Of The Dolls.

So now the obvious question becomes “why wasn’t this album, You & I, released in the U.S… only in the UK?” It’s loaded with potential hits for the American market.

Thanks for telling us about DD#2’s “brush with greatness.” “It’s a small world after all.”

It’s been a long time since I was this excited about multiple new-to-me songs by any given artist. The Pierces gave us several classic retro-style nuggets on You & I. Thank you very much for introducing them! Have a super week and a happy Thanksgiving, dear friend Cathy!

      Tom,

The picture of the cat with all of those chicks on it reminded me of the children’s story by Dr. Seuss, “Are You My Mother?” That’s why I choose to use that caption. 🙂

I’m glad you enjoyed the music set by The Pierces. I’ll never understand why a group as commercial sounding as these sisters didn’t reach the kind of popularity they deserve. They really have a nice vibe. And, why would they release their album in the UK and not in the US is a mystery to me, too. I thought the same thing with “We Are Stars” that it would be a great song for David Lynch to use in one of his productions. They have beautiful harmonies.

DD#2 met a number of celebrities when she worked in downtown Knoxville. That’s so super cool, too. Thank you for stopping by to sample music by The Pierces. I’m equally thankful that you enjoyed them as much as you did. Thank you for being such a special friend. I hope you and the wife have blessed Thanksgiving and a boogietastic week!

Hi, Cathy! The video for “It Will Not Be Forgotten” really reminded me of the David Lynch style, especially at the beginning when those heavy, somewhat creepy dark red curtains are drawn open to reveal the people and action on the “stage,” and at the end when they are drawn closed. In an article published by Onscenes entitled David Lynch: Holes and Curtains, Mark Fisher discusses Lynch’s use of curtains to mark the point that separates safe, familiar everyday life from an occult or criminal underworld: “The division between worlds was often marked by one of Lynch’s frequently recurring visual motifs: curtains. Curtains both conceal and reveal.”

Happy Thanksgiving to you and your family, dear friend Cathy!

          Tom,

Oh, okay yeah I see what you’re talking about. I based my impressions solely on The Pierces singing style. I don’t even think I watched any of the videos until now. lol Goofy me, right? Thanks piping up with more intel on what you were referring to and the tidbit about Holes and Curtains. That’s very interesting. I know that I would’ve figured that out on my own. Be well, my friend!
