Maine Vacation 2022

Maine Vacation 2022, Part 4

By the time we got done in the Bald Head area, it was time to head to Majestic Regency Resort our first place to call home for the next three nights. Don’t let the name fool you.  MJR is basically a motel with a pool, basketball court, and an outdoor eating area.  What I like about is it you can can pull your car close to the door,  no going through lobbies with prying eyes following your activity.  The room was nice.  It had a king size bed, nice size bathroom, and enough free space to move about comfortably.  It had the usual amenities like a small refrigerator, microwave, TV, and coffee maker. It was clean and relatively inexpensive, roughly $103 per night. The staff were friendly and accommodating, especially with our request for “no housekeeping”.

It seems something big always happens in world news.  For instances, while on our honeymoon in 1979, John Wayne died.  1989 for our 10th anniversary and first family vacation to Maine, the Tiananmen Square incident weighted on our minds. On our second trip northeast in 1997, John Denver was killed in a plane accident.  On our way home from our third vacation in Maine, we were stopped in Portland when I heard on the radio that President Reagan had passed.  His death casted a shadow on our drive home and sadly the pattern held true this time with the passing of Queen Elizabeth.  Isn’t this just weird to have fun events linked to sorrow?

We left our room for an early dinner.  Looking at some of the possibilities DH had uncovered over the years, we drove to Kittery to go to Bob’s Clam Hut. For 5 o’clock, Bob’s was quite busy.  We stood in line looking over the menu.  One woman from Massachusetts told us that coming to Bob’s was sort of like a pilgrimage for her and her mother who always tried to do it at least once a year.

Bob’s Clam Hut

Seafood and fish aren’t normal staples in our regular diet. Over the years, we’ve developed more sensitivity to salmon and shellfish has grown less appealing to us mostly because of the texture but when in Maine you want to experience the seafood.

At Bob’s we shared an order of clam strips, a crabmeat roll, fries, and Moxie

As you can see, the nibble and snap applied here. Everything was good but the fried clam strips (not the whole belly) was our favorite. I think I would’ve preferred the crabmeat roll warmed up but it’s typically served cold like tuna salad. I’m sure heating mayo might be a safety issue in the restaurant industry. I made some crabmeat rolls for our anniversary once. I zapped the salad for a short bit before loading the roll with the crabmeat and it tasted fine. We certainly will eat again at Bob’s if in southern Maine again, though. It was really good.

Early evening at Nubble Light

Since we were south of our room, DH suggested we go back to Nubble Light on our way. I’m really glad that he did, too. A crowd was gathered to witness the flashing on and off of Nubble’s Light. I took a few pictures but then remembered I wanted to capture some of our memories on video. Apple’s playback format is .MOV. I opened it in iMovie to save the below clip as a Mp4 file. It looks nice. I hope it doesn’t cause a strain on my blog loading. If so, please let me kow.

Nubble Light early evening

I could’ve stayed longer but we were both pretty tired now 36+ hours without sleep. We ended things on sweet note. We stopped at Big Daddy’s Homemade Ice Cream in Wells.

I scream, you scream, we all scream for ice cream!

Big Daddy’s had a short line on this breezy evening. You can’t tell this in the above picture but it was breezy…really quite gusty at times. Did we really want ice cream bad enough to suffer through the cool wind? The answer…YES!

I had a small (single scoop) Salted Caramel Crunch. DH had a medium size (double scoops) with flavors Maine Blueberry and Peach. All three flavors were excellent! This is the only time we got to visit Big Daddy’s but you can bet we’ll return again someday. Hopefully, it won’t take 18 years.

Shivering to death after eating this frozen goodness with our tummies and taste buds satisfied, we made a bee-line for our room. Absolutely exhausted, we brushed our teeth, and went to bed. I was asleep before my head hit the pillow. Honestly.

The first full day in Maine has ended. I’ll be back next week with day two! If you’re looking to join other photo memes then you’ll want to check out these Wednesday connections…Sandee, Natasha, & Wordless Wednesday!

Up next on CAAC, the 4M dance party opens on Sunday for early party goers. I moved my actual music post back to Mondays.  Come boogie with me to this week’s theme picks!  Have a wild and wonderful day! X💋X💋, Cathy

That was a good price for a place to stay in Maine during tourist season. The only seafood I eat is solid white albacore tuna and even that is a love/hate relationship. 🙂 XO

Thanks for the tour, Cathy! Your video and the night shot of the ice cream place turned out beautifully, along with the rest of your photos.

I’m also an ice cream lover and, at this time of year, almost all of our ice cream places have closed until spring (I realize you were there back in September). I try to visit places that make their own and not depend on selling the brands sold in supermarkets). Now I’m craving ice cream! I’ve had a couple of world events happen during our vacations, too, including the death of Pope John Paul I and the 7/7/2005 terrorist attack in London. Alana ramblinwitham

      Alana,

We generally prefer to get ice cream that’s made in the shop. Sometimes, we’ll get something that Mainers can buy in the store only because it’s something we can’t buy. Giffords is one of the brands you get get in super markets but some ice cream stands sell it. Our ice cream shops are open year round. The problem is we don’t have too many that make their own ice cream which is a major bummer. It’s hard to get really super quality ice cream. We only have one local diary that makes ice cream, Cruze Farms. They even have a shop downtown which isn’t convenient and we have yet to go to it. I think we found their ice cream in one of the foothill shops. I remember liking it but I really want to get it again. Mmm, now I want ice cream!

      Carol,

Yeah, you said it, “Life happens”. It’s odd how I can remember these events taking place while we were on vacation but I can’t tell you what happened last week.lol

  • Sandee

What a lovely time you had. Love the video. The waves were so soothing.

Oh the food. I would have had some of each of those and yes on the ice cream. I could feel the cold too. I still would have had the ice cream.

Thank you for joining the Wordless Wednesday Blog Hop.

Have a fabulous Wordless Wednesday. Love and hugs, Cathy. ♥

      Sandee,

I don’t mind eating ice cream when it’s cold just as long as I can pull a blanket up on me. I didn’t have that as an option while on vacation, though. I was pretty cold by the time we got done. Thankfully, the rental car had a good heater and we warmed up quickly.

    Hi, Cathy!

Happy Wild, Wacky and Almost Wordless Wednesday, dear friend! I hope your week is going well and that you are feeling much better than you were last time we connected. I’ve been thinking about you and also thinking about your DD, her BFF and sweet LA, who have all been under the weather lately.

I must say that I am really enjoying these segments that take us along with you and DH on your recent trip to Maine. It occurred to me that you could have used your New England adventure as the basis for your A to Z Challenge next year. With a little creative A to Z tagging, you probably would have had enough pictures and things to talk about to fill the entire month of April. I understand, though, that it is much better to report on your fun activities now while they are still fresh in your noggin. Yessum, you’ve had quite a few major news developments break while you’ve been on your trips to Maine. I try not to pay attention to the news when I am on vacation, because it is mostly bad.

I am a seafood lover, and Bob’s Clam Hut looks like my kind of place. The picture of the food you were served has my mouth watering, and so does the pic of the ice cream you guys got at Big Daddy’s that chilly evening. Like you, I love to eat ice cream any time of year in any type of weather.

The highlight of this post for me is your return to Nubble Light. It’s such a beautiful spot and the lighthouse a sight to behold. Your camera captured golden moments at dusk as the lighthouse started flashing its red light. It was very exciting to watch the video you took and actually hear the waves crashing on the rocks. As I watched it, my imagination kicked-in and I could feel the chilly breeze and smell the fresh salt air. Thank you for posting that vid!

I am astonished that you guys were still functioning after that very long drive and more than 36 hours without sleep. It doesn’t surprise me in the least that you were asleep before your head hit the pillow.

FYI – The Shady’s Place production of “Guys and Dolls” is now running in a limited engagement, and you are cordially invited.

Have a wonderful Wednesday and enjoy the rest of your week, dear friend Cathy!

      Tom,

I thought about using my vacation pictures for next year’s A to Z Challenge but that’s a long time to have to wait to share our adventure and as you pointed out the details are fresh in my mind. I certainly could still do this except to take a different approach. That would be a great opportunity to do tell my readers about area through past experiences or plans for the future.

Bob’s Clam Hut was really good. They have a big menu. We definitely will eat there again if given the chance. I was just telling DH yesterday that I’m glad we returned to Nubble on this evening. It was truly a magnificent end to a very exhaustingly thrilling day. I think the reason my allergies hit so hard this year is due to being so run down from vacation. That’s usually the perfect situation for anyone immune system to be easily compromised. Although, I’m not 100% myself yet I am feeling better and that’s really good. Thanks for letting me know about your newest post. I’m heading your way in a few. Thanks for stopping by today, my friend!
