Maine Vacation 2022

Maine Vacation 2022, Part 16

Good day, thank you for joining me as I continue my Maine photo memories journey. Previously, I mentioned our daughter now living in Maine joined us in Bar Harbor. It’s now Monday, September 19th. It was a pretty morning. After breakfast at Jordan’s, we drove into Acadia to spend the day.

Our first stop in Acadia was at Sand Beach. For a Monday, I was surprised to see the parking lot nearly full. My pictures truly don’t do any of the area justice. Capturing the waves timing takes a lot of practice. You can right click on any of my images for a better view.

We had reservations for Cadillac Mountain.  Visibility was far improved over the day before when we couldn’t see anything.  The wind was pretty stout, though.  This time we were able to hike along the trail just off the parking lot.  I’m not sure what is, but I had a terrible time with stability on the uneven rocky surface.  I guess if I lived in a similar place or if I were used to rough terrain then I wouldn’t have had this problem.  The view was amazing.  I manage to get a couple of share-worthy pictures and I shot a short video to share, as well.

I love the vantage point this trail gives. It’s amazing how much closer it makes you feel like you are looking from that elevation.

From Cadillac Mountain, we headed to Jordan Pond House. We had wonderful success in finding immediate parking. There was a 30-45 minute wait. We put our names on it and decided to walk to Jordan Pond just a short walk behind the restaurant & gift shop. The trail we took is part of The Bubbles path but we went only as far as the pond. Maybe, next time we’re in Acadia we can hike more of the trail.

After we were satisfied with our time photographing the area, we headed back to gift shop as we had time while we waited.

The gift shop was very busy. I didn’t find anything I wanted which was a disappointment. What my pictures don’t show is we did order dinner. I’m unsure why I didn’t take a photo, though. Everything was good. I enjoyed the experience of having popovers and tea. That was something we really wanted to do in 2004 but was unable to because of the crowd and we later regretted.

After dinner, we thought we’d see if Thunder Hole had any action going on. It began to drizzle. In the photo below you see the rain hitting the water.

Beaver Dam and yes, if you zoom in you can see the beaver’s home

Parking wasn’t an issue at Thunder Hole this time. It was rain and the wind but we braved it anyhow. I got one picture to share and a short video to share.

Where are the waves at Thunder Hole?

When we were here the last time, we went as far as we could just beyond the umbrella people in the above picture. Do you see the area with railing?  That’s where we stood, at night and I’ll be honest I was a bit unnerved but didn’t want to be a big scaredy Cathy.

I used Pixelmator Pro to apply an ethereal filter to lighten the image.  Otherwise you can’t see the ocean or the the rocks surrounding us, just the railing and concrete. The photo-edit picked up the water spots on the lens.  DH was using our first digital camera.

Thunder Hole June 2004

The first time we were at Thunder Hole in 1997, the children were 3, 5, and 7 years old, and the waves were totally cooperating. We didn’t go as far down quite this far. We must have been standing just behind the umbrella people slightly elevated when I took this picture.

Original shot with my 35mm Nikon point n’ shot camera. This is photo scan that I used Pixelmator Pro to lighten using the ethereal filter. This was so thrilling!

Finally, here’s the Thunder Hole video taken this time.

That concludes another day in Maine.  I appreciate your visit and your time to journey with me as I enjoy our vacation all over again. Watch my Monday’s Music Moves Me post each week for announcements when to expect the next installment in this series.  Speaking of which, if you have music to share you’re invited to link up hit the dance floor with the 4M crew.  You’ll find me boogieing to the weekly theme inspired song picks but remember themes aren’t required to gain access to this party.

Have a wonderful wild and not-so-wordless Wednesday!   X💋X💋, Cathy

      Ellen,

Adding the older memories was extra fun for me. It’s amazing how fast time gets away from you, isn’t it? I can live in these moments forever as long as I have constant reminders of them. 🙂

      Sandee,

The ocean sounded awesome. The power behind the waves is just incredible! Thanks for stopping by and thank you for all that you do for Marie!

    Hi, Cathy!

Happy Wild, Wacky and Almost Wordless Wednesday, dear friend! I hope you and DH are having a nice week.

I am eager to head out with you, DH and DD2 again today as you proceed to the next set of destinations in Maine. It’s incredible that you remembered stopping at that same location in 1997 to check the map. Same with your memory of that precise Egg Light vantage point. Your mind is a steel trap, dear friend. Sand Beach in Acadia looks like a lovely, clean spot. With all the tourists passing through, I hope it stays pristine and unspoiled. The rocks, beach and water offered material for excellent compositions, Cathy. That’s a stunning shot of the vertical rock faces jutting upward all around you! I imagine various types of critters emerge to bask on the boulders when people aren’t around. Yessum, the powerful wave action is an awesome phenomenon as they break upon the rocks and gradually erode them creating gaps, grooves, channels and other effects. You and your camera nicely captured those interesting rock formations. It is such a pleasure to hear your voice narrating your video and to see DH and DD milling around on the beach and hear the waves crashing ashore. More stunning sights are offered at Cadillac Mountain including the view of Porcupine Islands, plus another opportunity to hear your lovely voice. The second vid also gave me the best views yet of your loved ones, DD & DH. I can hear that brisk wind, and can easily understand why you would experience instability on the rugged landscape with the wind blowing hard.

The area around Jordan Pond House is also breathtaking. I love seeing the rocks dotting Jordan Pond in the foreground and the Bubbles off in the distance. Based on your pics of the food they served, the Jordan Pond House restaurant looks well worth the wait. I’d love to taste their popovers and tea, and that orange cake looks out of this world. Thanks for showing the beaver dam at Thunder Hole. As I stated in another chapter, even a cloudy or rainy day can yield many good pictures and produce fond memories. Thanks for sharing the flashback photo of you and the kids standing at the very same spot back in 2004. I’m sure looking at those old pics brings tears to your eyes. Where does the time go? I can see why you hesitated to get too close to those ferocious waves while visiting that spot, aptly named Thunder Hole. The third video is another delight and I thank you. DH is a lucky man to have a wife with a such a sunny disposition and pleasant speaking voice.

Having experienced 16 volumes of this series with you, it occurs to me that you guys packed an amazing amount of fun, excitement, sightseeing and memory making into this dream trip. You were up early every day and on the go-go-go, returning home many hours later tired and hungry, but with your heads and camera filled with images gathered during the day’s adventures. You did and saw enough to fill 10 vacations, in my opinion.

Enjoy the rest of your week, dear friend Cathy!

      Tom,

I’m glad to have you in tow again for the next edition of this series. It marvels the brain how much we did on our vacation. If my photo library is an indicator of how many vacations is in the collection then it surely seems like it is 10. lol I don’t know if people who take annual vacations use their cameras as much as us with our sporadic trips but we’ve always been this way. I remember how expensive it was to process film from our 1997 trip with all five using cameras. In the coming weeks we have plans for two separate weekend get-aways which I’m excited about. I’ll share more after these trips once we take them. 🙂
