Christmas Music Marathon

Day 21 : S.a.D We Need A Little Christmas

Christmas greetings!  For the month of December, I plan to share a Christmas song each day with the hope of adding a little extra cheer to your holiday.  Part of my challenge in this series is to bring to you a new-to-me song or artist discoveries.  There’s no telling what song pick I’ll go with but you’ll find artists from all genres celebrating in song this almost magical, holy season.

I was doing so well with keeping up how I came up on my song picks but somehow today’s choice I lost along the way.  No doubt this one fell into the ‘forgotten’ category but I definitely remember the song as soon as I heard it.  I can’t say which old artist introduced the tune to my ears as a kid. The song got its start on Broadway in the musical Mame (1966) with Angela Lansbury first performed it.  Let’s give it up for Mitzi Gaynor singing We Need a Little Christmas!

There are 80+ covers of this classic.  In recent history, Kimberley Locke (2008 #19),  the Glee cast* (2010-11 #15), and Pentatonix (2020 #14) covers hit the US Adult Contemporary chart. *Also charted #15 Canada AC Billboard and #16 US Holiday Songs Billboard.

It’s officially the first day of winter!

Don’t even worry with leaving a comment. This is for your enjoyment.  There’s no worries or fuss or strings attached. Simply a moment for you to unwind and refresh your mind and body. 😉

I’m running behind on publishing the winner in my last BOTB.  It’s forth coming but it’ll probably be next week before I can get to that announcement.  Meanwhile, I’ll be back tomorrow with bells on with another Christmas song to start your day.  Take it easy and don’t let the hustle of the holiday drive you out of your mind.  The festivities are beautiful and fun but the true reason warms the heart better than these earthly things. Take time to bask in God’s great love.   It’s the most wonderful time of the year! X💋X💋, Cathy

Tickle Me Tuesday for giggles & grin this Christmas season. Speaking of reindeer, I stumbled on an old online article about women decorating breasts like a reindeer in weird internet craze. Why doesn’t this surprise me?

The song comes from “Mame” and is sung during a time when things are looking grim for her, so if it’s a little sad it fits in with the story. I love Lucille Ball’s version of it, mostly because she reminds me of Mom.

I was just about to post this song on my Facebook page, by The New Christy Minstrels.

Is this not the saddest Christmas song ever? I think so, but I cannot get enough of it.

    We Need a Little Christmas

    Haul out the holly
Put up the tree before my spirit falls again
    Fill up the stocking
I may be rushing things, but deck the halls again now

For we need a little Christmas, right this very minute
Candles in the window, carols at the spinet
Yes, we need a little Christmas, right this very minute
Hasn’t snowed a single flurry, but Santa dear we’re in a hurry

    Climb down the chimney
Turn on the brightest string of lights I’ve ever seen
    Slice up the fruit cake
It’s time we’ve hung some tinsel on the evergreen bough

For I’ve grown a little leaner, grown a little colder
Grown a little sadder, grown a little older
And I need a little angel sitting on my shoulder
    Need a little Christmas now

For we need a little music, need a little laughter
Need a little singing ringing through the rafter
And we need a little snappy, happy ever after
We need a little Christmas now

      Myke,

The lyrics are sad but it just goes to show just how powerful the Christmas season is over one’s heart. Let’s not get too old, too hurried, or too anything that might prevent a little Christmas in our lives every day of the year. Christmas isn’t just December. 😉 Thanks for dropping by, my friend.

Love the video. Christmas is such a magical time of year.

Love the funny. It’s funny what we don’t hear as we age.

Have a fabulous day, Cathy. Love and hugs. ♥

Happy Solstice, Cathy! 🌞 After today, there will be more and more daylight. Thanks for sharing that video of Mitzi Gaynor – very festive. And I loved the cartoons. 😆 Merry Christmas! 🎄

    Hi, Cathy!

Happy Tickle Me Tuesday and S. a. D. Day 21, dear friend!

It’s been a while since I watched a clip of actress and singer Mitzi Gaynor, a big name in my boyhood, the lady best known for South Pacific and No Biz Like Show Biz. Mitzi is still with us at age 90. This delightful performance clip is apparently from Kraft Music Hall’s Mitzi Gaynor Christmas Show that aired December 20, 1967. I thought you might get a kick out of the synopsis I found on IMDB for that Christmas special:

<< Mitzi sings and dances through several cute seasonal costumes and sings a variety of classic holiday numbers. A highlight is Santa Claus played by Johnny Carson’s Tonight Show sidekick Ed McMahon, seriously getting into the part, and Cyril Ritchard and Tony Tanner as a lighthearted Ebeneezer Scrooge and Cratchit singing “Where would You Be Without Me?”. >>

I like the cartoon of the old couch potato hubby misinterpreting the words “looks like reindeer.”

Thanks for the morning mewsic and smiles, dear friend Cathy, and enjoy the rest of your week!
