Battle of the Bands,  Monday's Music Moves Me

Born this day in 1941, #TomFogerty + #BoTB results

Awww Mondays hosted by Sandee from Comedy Plus.

This week’s Monday’s Mewsic Moves Me theme is Honoring November Born Mewsicians. * Before I hit the dance floor I want to share with your the battle results of November 1st Kingston Calypso BoTB showdown.

Honestly, I didn’t know how this battle would go down but the majority of the voters preferred the No Name Trio (6 to 4) over Diana Coupland. So, the calypso/jazz threesome take the victory. Congrats to Jac Jones, Amy Baldwin, & Will Mount! Did you notice if you take the first letter in each of the mewsicians name it spells JAW?  😀  My mind is working strangely. Yep,that’s nothing new. I’m not going to be able to give you another sample of their mewsic, so instead I’m sharing with you another song from Dr. No.  You may remember the movie scene where Honey Rider (Ursula Andress) is coming out of the sea singing this tune with James Bond (Sean Connery) looking on.  Here’s Under The Mango Tree by the composer & singer, Monty Norman.

It’s interesting that my loser in this round recorded “Under The Mango Tree” for the Dr. No soundtrack. I’ll be back on the 16th with another BoTB, so mark  your calendar. 😉

Moving onto the dance floor I’m going with the former Credence Clearwater Revival founder and guitarist, Tom Fogerty! To mark the anniversary of his birth, I found a YouTube collection of Tom’s best songs.

Tom passed away 30 years this past September 6th, official cause of death tuberculosis stemming from complications from a blood transfusion needed after back surgery tainted with HIV.

Speaking of November birthdays, DH’s oldest brother will celebrate his 71st next week. It truly seems like yesterday we were in our courting days and my BIL doing goofy things to make me laugh while capturing the two of us on film.  The Kennedy boys have a great sense of humor!

In closing, I wanted to send prayers to Alex Trebek’s family. The Jeopardy TV game host lost his fight with cancer yesterday.  Oddly, the news arrived to my ears shortly after one of his commercials aired and I thought in that instance, “I wonder how Alex is doing?”. That’s when DH told me he got a text alert with the sad mews of his departure.  May you rest on that beautiful shore where you’ll never grow old or know no pain or heartache, Mr. Trebek!

Thanks for making me apart of your day. That’s a wrap for now, until next we met, have a boogietastic week!  X💋X💋, Cathy

We enjoyed hearing Tom Fogerty again and we were really sad to hear about Alex Trebek. Bond, no more shaken or stirred for us since they’ve trashed the original character.

      Brian,

Yep, they producers are making a mess out of the Bond legacy. I betcha Ian Flemming is rolling in his grave. We keep hearing on and off how the next Bond is going to be a female. That’s just stupid and the old fans won’t stand for it. They are tailoring their film making around a generation of folks who are aren’t traditional thinking. I like it when men are men (masculine) and women are women (feminine). It really sad how the behavior of the sexes are the opposite these days.

You know, I think I might have been tempted to tell you that the initials of the no-name band’s members spelled out JAW, too…

Tom Fogerty never got the recognition that he deserved.

I love that sheep ..blessings all around! Bummer, but I am not surprised the Trio won. I voted for the original…maybe I was the only one:) I didn’t know Fogerty died like that..so very sad. Very sad about the wonderful, classy Alex Trebek who was also a proud Canadian. He gave money to Ottawa University school and he donated a large piece of land for wildlife. He was also a huge Montreal Canadiens fan. He was great!

      Birgit,

The original is definitely the best and the most fun version and your vote for Diana lined up closely to it so I see why you were drawn to hers. I didn’t know Trebek was a Canadian until recently. It’s interesting the number of celebrities I find out who are from our northern sister country.

Oh so many-Mary Pickford-America’s Sweetheart, was born in Toronto. Norma Shearer-famous actress and her brother Douglas Shearer who invented so many camera designs that revolutionized the film industry were born in Montreal. The first person to be known by name as an actress, instead of the Biograph Girl, was Florence Lawrence who was born in Hamilton, On. William Shatner, Walter Pidgeon, Raymond Massey, Jim Carrey, Mike Myers…there are more:) Canadians Rock!

I guess it was Coupland’s voice that drove the voting majority to the trio. Her song performance wasn’t really that bad, but first impressions carry a lot of weight.

I never watched Jeopardy very often, but I did like Alex Trebek. He was a real class act.

      Lee,

You might be right on why the instrumental won in this round but still I enjoyed Diana’s version. I couldn’t listen to her sing like that all day, though.

We didn’t watch Jeopardy much, either. That program was definitely out of my element. If I got a question right it was mostly sheer luck. 99% of the time I answer wrong. 😀

    Love the Awww. So cute.

Yay on the winner. I just thought they did the best job.

I love all the James Bond movies and especially the music.

Thank you for joining the Awww Mondays Blog Hop.

Have a fabulous Awww Monday and week. Love and hugs. ♥

      Sandee,

The mewsic for the Bond films is spot on stuff! I think Skyfall is the last 007 movie we’ve seen. WOW, I was thinking there was another after that but IMDB doesn’t list anything. I guess we’re caught up. Of course, if they do come out with a new one I’m not sure if we’ll see it. They aren’t nearly as good as the old ones.

      Rain,

A good friend of ours had a difficult delivery resulting in emergency surgery. She nearly bleed to death and required a blood transfusion. Several years later, she learned she picked up Heptitis C from the blood she received. That was in 1990. The medical community has learned much over the years. I’m happy to live in modern times with the continual advancements in medicine.

      Robin,

For many years Jeopardy was filmed in New York. I imagine New Yorkers especially have a deeper connection with the late game show host. His general demeaner always struck me that he was a kind man. Thanks for listening to the Tom Fogerty collection.

I thought about a CCR song when I saw Tom Fogerty’s name pop up as a November birthday, but since I share a November 20 birthday with Duane Allman, I wen with the Allman Brothers. It’s shame that sibling rivalry broke up one of the best rock bands of the era and lead to lawsuits that kept John from being able to play CCR songs for years. Have a blessed week.

Now that I think of it, that scene with Ursula Andress (yes, we used to call her Undress, too) is about the only thing I remember from that movie (it’s been well over 20 years since I last saw it). I don’t think I ever heard a solo by Tom Fogerty (and here I am with my husband having owned nearly every CCR album at one time back in the vinyl day) I really enjoyed Goodbye Media Man and Underneath the Mango Tree, too. I’m broken up over Alex’s death. I was at a produce stand with my spouse buying apples for applesauce, of all things, when my manager from work texted me and let me know the news. I went to the proprietor (we are there enough that she recognizes husband and me) and shared memories of Alex with her. Then, when his death was the lead on the 6:30 pm news, I just started crying. He’s a great loss; what a caring and decent man he was.

    • Cathy Kennedy

      Alana,

CCR was an awesome group in its day. I love reading up on these old bands making discoveries of who started them and what happened to members. I had so hoped Alex would beat the big ‘C’ but it wasn’t meant to be. His statement he gave concerning his illness made me feel that he was at peace with it and ready for whatever happens. He was a decent man and as many have stated a class act!

  • Thomas Anderson

    Hi, Cathy!

Happy Awww-some 4M Monday to you, dear friend!

Thanks for reporting the result of your Nov. 1 band battle. I voted for the No Name Trio and am pleased to know that so many ears agreed with mine. Apart from the 007 theme, “Under The Mango Tree” is for me the most memorable song from Connery’s first Bond film Dr. No. I well remember the scene in which Ursula Andress (Ursula Undressed, as I liked to call her) emerges from the primordial soup.

Thanks for remembering and posting the songs of Tom Fogerty who rose to fame as rhythm guitarist of the swamp rock/roots rock band CCR. I read that Tom and younger brother John had bands of their own prior to CCR. Tom had a band with the bizarre name Spider Webb and the Insects and John’s group was called The Blue Velvets. Happy birthday in heaven to Tom Fogerty! I also wish a happy birthday next week to DH’s brother. Turns out he and I are the exact same age because my 71st birthday is also next week!

I also thank you for remembering the late Alex Trebek who gave us so much entertainment and education over the years. Alex will live on at Shady’s Place as host of my feature Rock Jeopardy.

Have a wonderful week, dear friend Cathy!

    • Cathy Kennedy

      Tom,

I don’t remember Ursula Undressed but that’s funny. She was quite the knock out in her youth and she wore a bikini well. I rarely got any of the answers right on Jeopardy but it was fun to try to get them right. It would help if I had the study notes ahead. 🙂 Alex Trebek seemed like a nice person.
