April A2Z Art Sketching through the Alphabet “J”

April 12, 2017 /

Jack and Jill went up the hill
To fetch a pail of water
Jack fell down and broke his crown,
And Jill came tumbling after

Hello, Kitten & Dawgs!  We all know this classic nursery rhyme, especially the first verse but do you know the second and third? I do not. According to Wikipedia, these are the 20th century, which is slightly re-written from earlier versions.

Up Jack got and home did trot,
As fast as he could caper;
And went to bed and bound his head
With vinegar and brown paper

When Jill came in how she did grin
To see Jack’s paper plaster;
Mother vexed did whip her next
For causing Jack’s disaster

Wouldn’t you know the girl is a fault here? Poor ole Jack just didn’t have a chance. 😀

I hope today’s  art sketch encourages you to pursue your lost passion.  It’s easy to allow time to rob you of simple joys.  If you’re rusty then it’s time to oil those hinges and get started! If you’re afraid to try, just do it! What do you have to lose? Absolutely nothing! Who knows you might be surprised to at what you can accomplish when you set your mind to it.  I know I was! 🙂

    What a great drawing 🙂 I could never draw too good but wish I had tried harder when I was younger. I would love to be able to draw better 🙂 Thanks for hosting.

      Karren, I wonder how much of the whole nursery rhyme is recited in Kindergarten since we learned most of them anyhow. When I did this sketch a new idea flashed in my noggin’ to draw pictures of popular nursery rhymes and share the most famous verses with my sketch like I did with this one. 🙂 Thanks for stopping by and have a good afternoon!

    No, I’ve never heard those verses before ever! Very clever & I totally love it! Just read it to my hubby & he things you made it up & I told him where to look. bwahahahaha fantastic Cat… leave it up to you to make me laugh when I needed it. My computer was down all day, but be proud of me girl cuz I fixed it myself. Woo Hoo I’m proud of me too! bwahahaha Well, I did find out one thing though… this commenting thing is depressing. I guess it’s a give first & maybe get later. Oh well as I thought… nobody loves me… 🙁 Oh well, let me get out there and try to get at least one comment on my Post… 🙁 Have a good night sweetie!       Marie, Well good for you girl for fixing your computer all by yourself! I’m very proud of you, too. 🙂 I do a lot of commenting first and waiting. Most of those I visit are good to do return visits and will leave a comment but that’s not true of everyone. BTW, on your Tuesday post, I commented twice. The first time I added a YouTube URL and my URL. I got a notice saying my comment is being held for moderation. You may need to check your spam folder because if others are adding more than one URL in your comments then that may be where your commenters are being thrown. Not that you aren’t loved but you may feel more loved if you find your spam folder full of real blogger comments. 🙂 Thanks for stopping by for a visit, my friend!

    Hi Cathy!

    I had heard variations of the nursery rhyme, but not sure that I had heard that third verse before. i have to agree with the others, your sketches are purrfect for a children’s book!

    This is really cute and you took me by surprise because I thought you would draw a Jay:) It’s very sweet and I am trying to remember what it truly meant. The newer version does not appeal to me at all. The girls always get the spanking. I wish spanking would actually be back in style because i never thought of spanking as hitting. Hitting to me was a slap across the face or punching. This was just discipline which kids need more of nowadays

    Arlee definitely has a good idea about the children’s book, Cathy. Your sketches are worthy of such a project. 🙂 I had no idea there was a second let alone a third verse to Jack and Jill. Interesting!

    Of course it was all Jill’s fault! LOL! I remember when I was a young girl and my little brother got hurt my mother blamed me. I wasn’t even near him and did nothing to cause the accident. Just reading that poem though; my, how times have changed. Great sketch!

      Yvonne, I don’t recall if my any of my siblings drew since I’m the oldest and first to move out but I do recall my uncles liking to drawing. Oh, and my mom liked to doodle, too! My youngest daughter loved drawing when she was younger. DH said he liked drawing as a boy. The love for doodling just surrounds me! Thank you for popping over for a visit!

    Love your Jack & Jill sketch Cathy! And I sure didn’t know the other verses of the nursery rhyme. I think doing a children’s book is definitely in your future!

      Michele, thanks! I remember hearing the other but that’s about it. I wonder why most of us blocked out the other verses? Maybe none of us liked that Jill got a spanking. lol

      Rhonda, I think the who rhyme is innocent even though Jill got spanked for something she probably didn’t do, which happens sometimes when a parent jumps to the wrong conclusions. Thanks for visiting!

    Hi, Cathy!

    Happy J-Day to you, dear friend! You score double “J” points with this post, one point for Jack and one for Jill. 🙂 I agree with Mr. Bird. Your sketches are so good, so entertaining, that you should consider writing and illustrating children’s books. I can see this one of jack and Jill on a hill coming to life with a watercolor effect. When I was very young my father read to me each night at bedtime. This old nursery rhyme was one that he read, but all I remember of it is that well known first verse. It is a little disturbing to imagine Mommie Dearest whipping poor little Jill for being the cause of Jack’s mishap without listening to her side of the story.

      I’m glad you joined me this morning. I appreciate your kind comment and encouragement. I hope to put illustrations to one of my children’s stories soon. I did another “J” sketch of a Jack in the box but decided to not share it at this time. You know many of the old nursery rhymes mentions mothers sending their kids to bed without a meal or spankings and such. I guess when these sorts of parenting methods were accepting at the time the author penned these little poems. Things certainly have changed in how kids are punished today.       Steve, The header I pulled together using components from the Internet using Pixelmator. I love doing stuff like that but then you know with my many past photo-art creations.
