Skywatch Friday

Afternoon Sunshine SWF + CTST Vol. 6

January brought a mix of gray and blue skies but it seemed the gloom hung around more than I cared for so when the Mr. Blue Sky showed up the last full week of the month then I had to get outside for a quick snap and to enjoy the lovely afternoon sunshine!

Linking with photo enthusiasts around the globe in Skywatch Friday

Along with my weekly sky views,  I’m including my Celebrate The Small Things segment. Here’s my list of celebrations!

I’m celebrating better hearing!  I went to the doctor last Friday. He told me I had an inner ear infection and gave me an antibiotic.  While it’s not all better I do hear better. I reckon another round of antibiotics is needed.  I’m celebrating a new marshmallow cereal treat I made for Super Bowl weekend and I’m sharing my recipe below.

The Cocoa Pebbles were our favorite! Mmm, don’t they look good? ?

What are you celebrating?

See what others are celebrating this week and if you want to join the linky, then visit Lexa for details!

I’m playing along with TMP again and if you’re interested the rules are simple; base on the theme of the week pick three to five movies and tell us why you picked them, then link up with Wandering through the Shelves.  This week’s movie theme is Prodigy/Genius.

October Sky is close to my heart. The author of the book, Rocket Boys, Homer Hickam hails from the same West Virginia county as little ole me which later became the movie, October Sky, that coincidentally premiered here in Knoxville (they shot a lot of the movie in nearby Oliver Springs, TN).

Young Homer Hickam got the right nudge from the right science teacher to literally shoot for the stars. It takes a true genius to pull one’s dreams off like Hickam did! The movie is fun and it leaves you with that feel-good sense that only one can get from a film like this. We own it on Blu-ray!

I.Q. is a romantic comedy between Albert Einstein’s niece, Catherine Boyd (Meg Ryan) whose a highly, intelligent doctoral student at Princeton University and an auto mechanic, Ed Walters (Tim Robbins). The thing is, Boyd is engaged to a stuffy Princeton Professor but when Walters shows up at his home looking for his niece then he knew she needed a little push. Einstein devises a ruse with the help of his friends that might give Ed a fighting chance at winning Catherine’s heart.to open his niece’s eyes to at giving Ed a chance. love when he realizes Ed is the man for Catherine.

This film portrays Einstein as a fun-loving genius with a streak of mischief. I highly recommend this fun flick! We own it on DVD.

My last movie pick I decided to a different direction and although I never really thought of composers as geniuses but after revisiting the film, Amadeus,  my eyes were open with the portrayal of this mewsic genius.

The movie takes you through Mozart’s life from the perspective of another composure late in years whose admiration for Amadeus mushroomed into bitter jealousy and anger. How accurate the account is I don’t know but I am finding the movie entertaining. During today’s elliptical session I plan to finish watching it.  Available for streaming on Netflix!

I’ll leave you, Kittens and Dawgs, with The Best of Mozart but you’re invited to join me for some media fun while getting your weekly dose of meds laughs with my newest edition of Friday Sillies!

Have a celebratory, ingenious, skywatch-tastic day! 😉

Kat, thank you for popping by today. I enjoyed Amadeus more than I thought I would but the ending…oh it was so sad! October Sky is a nice, feel-good movie. I.Q. is a delightfully fun flick. Walter Matheu makes an excellent Albert Einstein! BTW, you have a lot of blogs listed under your profile, can you tell me which one to visit? That would help a lot. 🙂 Have a good week!

Brittani, Jake was 19 at the time the movie released, so he was probably 18 while they filmed it which explains why he has such a baby face. lol Thanks for visiting and have a good week.

October Sky is one of my favorite films! It’s so inspiring and filled with a sense of American can-do-ism that it sweeps you right under its spell. Jake is perfect in the lead as are Chris Cooper and Natalie Canaday as his folks and those three other young men who play his friends. I’m not a big Laura Dern fan but she is terrific in this as well. A marvelous picture.

I thoght IQ was okay but I’ve never watched it after the initial time.

We have a match! Amadeus is such an impressive film full of grandeur and beauty. It would fall more under the prodigy part of the theme but then a prodigy is a genius as well so it fits the whole idea.

I noticed that you said you tried to visit my blog last week…I don’t have one but thanks. That’s why I list my picks in with my comment. Just have never gotten around to it.

I actually did a theme within the theme all relating to musical gifts.

The Legend of 1900 (1998)-In the year 1900 Danny Boodmann, a stoker (Bill Nunn) on an American ship discovers an abandoned baby left on board. Taking him in to raise as his own he gives him a long unwieldy name eventually shortened to 1900 as the pair live their life at sea. As 1900 grows his musical genius becomes apparent and he becomes the ship’s mascot. After a tragedy befalls Danny 1900 remains on board growing to manhood (where he is played by Tim Roth) never touching dry land but continuing to hone his skill (including a fantastic sequence where he plays a waltz during a storm at sea). In time he befriends Max, a trumpeter in the ship orchestra (Taylor Pruitt Vince) and it is through his reverie we learn 1900’s story.

Poor Little Rich Girl (1936)-Starring Shirley Temple, one of Hollywood’s premier musical prodigies (in terms of dollars & cents THE musical prodigy) as the rich girl of the title. Barbara (that would be Shirl) on her way to boarding school is left to her own devices when her nanny is killed in an accident. Barbara unaware of this but not wanting to go to the school wanders the city until she becomes acquainted with and is taken in by a pair of down on their luck performers Jimmy & Jerry Dolan (Jack Oakie & Alice Faye). Thinking she’s an orphan and realizing that she’s a musical prodigy they put Barbara in their act as their daughter. Soon they hit the big time with their own radio show overseen by ad exec Margaret Allen (Gloria Stuart of Titanic fame) where they’re heard by Barbara’s widowed father who has been searching for her frantically. One of the better Temple vehicles with a first rate supporting cast, both Oakie and Alice Faye get several chances to strut their stuff, and no matter how you feel about her Shirley was a bundle of talent.

Amadeus (1984)-Multi Oscar winning story of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (Tom Hulce) and Antonio Salieri (an Oscar winning F. Murray Abraham) and how Salieri’s jealousy of Mozart’s genius lead to great tragedy for both. Amazing music, performances, set design and direction. An essential film.

Joel, I guess you not having a blog is the reason I couldn’t find ya. lol “Poor Little Rich Girl” might be up on my alley starring Shirley Temple. I always liked that little darling! The story line sounds interesting, too. It appears you can stream this movie on YouTube. I may try to watch it today while I use my elliptical. Thanks for the recommendations and the visit. Have a good weekend!

    • Cathy Kennedy

Hey, Joel! I just wanted you to know I followed through with watching “Poor Little Rich Girl” and it was an adorable movie! Shirley Temple is cute as a button! 🙂

  • lexacain

The clouds in the lovely pic look almost like a hand and fingers! Thank goodness you’re taking antibiotics for your ear infection. I’ve had those and they hurt! I hope you get better fast. Awesome Superbowl treats. Thanks for sharing the recipe and have a great weekend!

    • Cathy Kennedy

Lexa, the antibiotics are working but yesterday I phone my doctor requesting a different or stronger one. I’ll begin it tomorrow. I had a little pain with this off and on but I associated that with monkeying with my ear but I guess it was the infection more than anything. There’s no pain now but the stuffiness (mostly right ear) and nasal congestion still linger. I think I’ll be greatly improved next week this time. *cross fingers* Have a good weekend, my friend!

    • Cathy Kennedy

Ellen, I checked Netflix for October Sky and it wasn’t listed. 🙁 Of course, since I said that it’ll show up. 🙂 That’s what happened last week with one of my movie picks. lol

  • Birgit

Love the bright blue sky since we have had nothing but drab gray blah here. I’m glad you are feeling better regarding your hearing. I know my hearing is going and when my husband talks, I’m kind of liking that:) Love your movie picks! I almost picked October Sky and find it such a great gem of a film. Laura Dern was great in it. I have not seen You’re Albert Einstein but it is now on my list to see! I hope I can find it. We match with Amadeus! There are musical geniuses and he was one (Beethoven another). I am not sure if he acted like a goof shown in the film but his obsession with music is true and his spending was also true. He did die with hardly a peep in any newspapers and, due to a horrible rainstorm, even his widow did not attend his pauper’s grave ceremony. I love his music

    • Cathy Kennedy

Birgit, We have on and off blue skies today. It’s so chilly, though. We’re expected to get into the low 20s tonight which I am not looking forward to. October Sky is a nice movie. All the actors did a great job. You’ll like I.Q. and while I couldn’t find it to stream at no additional cost to me, I know I can either purchase or rent I.Q. at Amazon. In Amadeus, it made smile when they mentioned debt and wha a disgrace it was to owe money. Things have definitely changed where that’s concerned. It’s really sad that while he was hugely successful, he didn’t have know how to manage his money. Thanks for visiting. I’ll be over soon!

Arv! Thanks for joining me this morning. I wish we had some of that sun today. It’s a cold, gray day with the possibility of flurries. The linky you’re asking about is for Celebrate the Small Things. If you’re interested in participating then pop over at Lexa’s site and ask her to include you. It’s really simple, as you can see from my segment where I list the things I’m celebrating. Our lives are full of things to celebrate if we choose to see them for what they are. I’ll be by your place soon. 😉

I was looking at the weather in Maryville yesterday and it was nicer there than it was here in L.A. Pretty weird for February.

October Sky is a wonderful film. A friend of mine from Maryville has a part in it. He’s been in a lot of films as well as local Knoxville TV commercials and stage productions.

The Cocoa Krispy Treats look absolutely yummy.

Lee, sometimes the weather trends are strange like you found out yesterday. The night October Sky premiere in Knoxville, DH stopped by West Town Mall where a lot of excitement was going on and he stood next to Homer Hickam without a clue to who he was but he knew he had to be someone important to the movie after hearing his comments about anonymity. lol The high school Homer Hickam attended, Big Creek High was our rival. He mentions in his book traveling to exotic places like Iaeger, WV (that’s where our high school was located), which cracked me up. Of course, living in rural WV in the 50s where if you went anywhere as a kid you did so by either hitch-hiked or by foot or on a bicycle. The Cocoa Pebble Treats are fabulous! I can go for some more of those but we’re beginning to slack off on our junk eating. Thanks for visiting!
