Where In The World Are You Wednesday Blog Hop

The world has gotten a lot smaller since the birth of the Internet.  Long lost friends or family members are so much easier to connect with now than ever before.  Where in the world are you?

We have lived in East Tennessee for the last 31 years, in the home of the 1982 World’s Fair, Knoxville.  This is our home. However, my husband and I grew up in quaint southern West Virginia in McDowell County which is known by locals as the  ‘home of the Rocket Boys’.

Who are the Rocket Boys?  Homer Hickam, a native Mountaineer, grew up in McDowell County in the 1950s.  He wrote his memoirs of his life growing up in coal mining country and attending high school at Big Creek High where he became interested in making rockets.  The book was turned into a movie in the late 1990s and named, “October Sky”.

I have had the privilege of reading Mr. Hickam’s book. My family and I have seen the movie, which stars Jake Gyllenhaal, as a young Homer Hickam, and Lauren Dern who portrays, Miss Riley, the teacher who inspired Homer to discover more about building rockets.  Truly a wholesome, fun movie for the family to see.

Enjoy the fun, tell me where in the world you are? Oh yeah, if you want to link up with Stacie, then kindly click on her web address at the time of my post.

@Margaret…Rent the movie some time, I think you’ll enjoy it. We bought copies of Homer’s books for my FIL years ago. We had Homer autograph them. A bookstore in Alabama carried them at the time and the owner is a friend of Homer’s. Oh get this, the movie October Sky debuted here in Knoxville. Isn’t that interesting?

Hi Cathy. From California, here. I love how you show pride in your state of residence and your state of birth. October Sky sounds like a wonderful movie. I’ve heard of it, of course, but have never seen it. Thanks for the tip.
