Random Tuesday Thoughts

Where Did The Good Stuff Go?

Last week, my DH began to show signs of not being well. You know, achy joints, congestion, stuffiness, and coughing. He didn’t have a fever, though. On Wednesday of last week, I noticed I was beginning to feel not quite right. I chalked it up to as an allergy flare-up since I was moving some dusty stuff around. Wiped out by the weekend but I had no aches in the body just lots of congestion and lethargy, which brings me to my ramblings. NyQuil the sniffling, sneezing, coughing, aching, stuffy head, so you can rest medicine DOESN’T work anymore! At least not for my DH or myself.

What’s going on with NyQuil? Years ago, we would reluctantly take NyQuil because it would clobber us so badly we would have trouble getting up the next morning. Do you remember that? Is this still happening with you? Well, it certainly isn’t with us.

My DH and I took NyQuil last week in hopes to get a good night’s rest. I slept soundly for a few hours and then woke up. My nose was so stuffed up, I couldn’t fall back to sleep for well over an hour. The room just spun around and around while I lay in bed praying for sleep to fall upon me. A similar thing happened to my DH, too.

The bottom line is Vick’s has changed the formula. They no longer use the ingredient pseudoephedrine, which really makes this the sniffling, sneezing, coughing, aching, stuffy head, so you can rest medicine. I suspect this all came about with the new regulations on OTC meds to make it harder for the bad boys making meth.

Where did the good stuff go? Supposedly, you can still get this active ingredient behind the pharmacy counter. It sounds like you’re trying to buy something dirty, instead of a cold remedy. Anyhow, I can not speak with any authority on this matter since I haven’t inquired at my local Wal-Mart pharmacy to see if this is true or not.  However, according to the net (and you know it must be true) to purchase any product with pseudoephedrine, you have to show your id and sign a logbook.

Dah, don’t you think the bad boys can get a fake id? It’s not like they aren’t afraid to break the law or somethin’, you know? Isn’t that frustrating or what? I mean, the honest and innocent Mrs. Suzie Homemaker buys the good meds to help her family combat a nasty cold, and then something goes wrong with the system. Mrs. Suzie Homemaker gets carted off to jail one day accused of buying pseudoephedrine to make meth in her kitchen. I don’t trust the system. It has Big Government written all over it!

You can call me paranoid (Maybe, I should leave the house under an umbrella to camouflage myself from satellite surveillance), or you can call me strangely cautious.  eerie music fades out** Let’s just leave it at that. Somethings are better left unsaid, don’t you agree? big cheesy smile*

Oh yeah, it’s Valentine’s Day! Here are a couple of pictures of my red velvet cake I made for my DH. I took a wee bit of a short cut this year, I used Duncan Hines boxed Red Velvet cake mix, but I made my cream cheese frosting. For boxed cake mixes Duncan Hines is great!

Happy Valentine’s Day to all of my bloggy pals!  XOXO!!!

I sometimes have luck with Zyrtec D, but that sure isn’t a nighttime medicine. Last time I was sick I tried the Tylenol nighttime Nyquil type medicine, and it seemed to go alright. The best thing for not breathing is a Breathe Right strip – sure isn’t sexy, but who feels sexy when they can’t breathe anyway?

    Best of luck!

Hubby recently said the same thing about Nyquil. It just doesn’t work the same anymore. I haven’t used it in a while so i can’t say. but I remember having to sign for a Musinex prescription a few years back that the pediatrician recommended for my boy!!! And yes, I felt like I was doing something wrong!!!!

  • I am Harriet

It happened a couple of years ago and Nyquil will never be the same. I’m not pleased.

    Have a great Tuesday!

Good thing I read this. I was about to buy them because it seems everyone else gets results…or maybe I could still try and let you know.

But yes I”d be paranoid too about the behiind the counter thing…then you have to sign for it and that gives the boys in black a siggy.

    bah.

Oooh and cake! Don’t put it on the window sill or it will be gone! 🙂

I never used Nyquil but do like using Sudafed. But I have to get it behind the Pharmacy counter so it has the stuff that actually works in it. It’s a pain, but worth it for a decent night’s sleep when I’m sick.

This is my go-to cold rememdy too, and I haven’t noticed it failing on my last bout. I wonder if Canada has different regulaions on that drug? Can you imagine: people start smuggling Nyquil across the border to get a “fix”! LOL

I stopped using Nyquil a while ago when I noticed it didn’t work as well and cost too much. I blogged about my magic cure today though; if you can stomach it, i say try it!

I know that the regulations are a pain for those of us who use the products for what they’re supposed to be used for but believe me (this coming from someone that used to work behind one of those counters) the “bad guys” will send GRANDMAS in to get the stuff.

Yeah, it’s behind the counter. There is also a limit on how much you can buy. My mom complains because she’s got a large family but is only allowed to buy for one person. The only good thing for pharmacies is that it has cut down on the theft of cold meds. (Because if you are making meth why pay for your ingredients?) Hopefully your cold gets better soon.
