When Hell freezes over
The old saying when Hell freezes over surely must have come to pass this week with more than half of the country in a deep freeze. One news source claims record low temps will cost US $5B as millions forced to stay at home.
Local Meteorologists were tracking the impending arctic blast that was sweeping across the country on Sunday. With the threat of ice precipitation followed by snow accumulation, DH made the call to try to go to work after the sun rises. Monday morning, we woke with snow on the ground and bitter temps. Our highs for the day of 21° came at 8am and the temperatures fell all day.
The snow that fell was a dry powder. A thick layer of ice coated DH’s car windshield. It took him about half an hour to clean it off before he could leave for the day. Our street had some ice, but Knoxville main arteries were clear. DH later reported to me that our back streets were ice-covered and quite tricky in spots. Thankfully, he got to and from work okay.
By Tuesday morning a report claimed at least 49 cities with record-breaking lows. DH bundled up in layers to keep him snugly warm before braving the cold and arrived at work safely. Knoxville was among the list of record breakers reporting a bone-chilling 2°. Did your city make the cut? Don’t feel bad, if it didn’t.
These cartoons are funny, but none of us will be laughing when our utility bills arrive next month that’s for sure. I wonder what became of Al Gore’s global warming crisis. Oh yeah, the sun was frozen, too.

- How much baking did you do before and after Christmas? I didn’t do much baking this Christmas, either before or after. The only thing I baked this year was an Italian Cream Cake and Gingerbread cookies.
- Do you get more inspired to bake when the temps are cooler? Sometimes, but not lately. I think I prefer to not think about baking unless it is something that isn’t sweet. I need to stay away from stuff like that.
- Do you have any food intolerance or allergies? I am lactose intolerant. Supposedly, I am allergic to pecans and tuna, but I do not avoid them. Why I even have hot cocoa occasionally made with milk. Just as long as I don’t drink a lot of it, then the fall-out isn’t too bad.
- When was the last time you were in a restaurant? The last time we dined out was in August when we took the children to Bravo for a family dinner. We don’t eat out often.
- What’s your favorite accent(speech)? I like a variety of accents, but my favorite may be of the Irish or Scots. Perhaps, it’s my own Irish roots which make me partial to this speech.
- My favorite time of the year is when the earth bursts alive in the spring with its colors.

I heard it say that it was actually colder in my area — than at the North Pole!! something about a polar shift or something where all the Artic air came down here, and all our warm air went up there. But I didn’t need a weatherman to tell me it was just darn cold!
I was happy to be snuggled warm in my bed – even if I was ill.

When I was 11, my family moved from Iowa, where schools had closed the winter before for two feet of snow to Texas, where schools closed the next winter for 2 inches of snow. Every city has a different tolerance for cold. Here in Virginia, it got down to 7 degrees, but they closed the schools for fear of ice on the road for school buses.

Keeping your electricity on is a wonderful blessing! That was one thing I feared with not only the cold temps, but the ice that fell which is extremely hazardous for power lines. Let’s keep our fingers crossed that spring arrives quickly.

I don’t remember what our Tuesday morning temps were. I can’t remember going anywhere Tuesday morning. But, when we left the house on Monday morning, it was 32 degrees, which is cold for this part of Texas…proper winter weather back where we were raised in South Carolina, though. I love cold weather. It is 69 degrees here now.

I wouldn’t go so far to say I love cold weather. I like the seasonal changes, but cold weather? I can take it in short measure and that’s about it. What I find is the older I get the less tolerant I become of the cold, too. Thanks for sharing the info about Dark Shadows. I will definitely shoot Netflix an email!

I breathe better with the cooler temps. If I get too cold, I can cover up, but generally it is very hot here. There’s only so much that I can take off without getting arrested. 🙂 It is harder for me to breathe the warmer it gets.
I get cold chills AND hot flashes…much prefer the chills, though sometimes it is quite painful.

I agree with you about the time of year – I love the spring too. Our weather is just coming out of the freezing mark, but it’s the wind that’s so cold. And I just got my gas bill, which is the high one in the wintertime. $100 above what it was last month. Not TOO bad. {:-Deb

DH told me to expect our electric bill to be $100 more than usual. I shutter to think it will be THAT much too much. I guess we will have to bite the bullet and pay it. At least we have a home that we can heat and feel warm in, even if it means we have to give up something else, right?

115° seems too unreal, but I’m told the high temps in the dessert aren’t as bad as the heat & humidity that we have in our neck of the woods? Of course, I will more than likely will never know this since Arizona is just too far from us to visit on a whim. 🙂

I was in Michigan most of the holidays and left on Saturday – before the snow storm hit. I was happy that we were able to get out of there. Even before the snow storm the temperature was 10, and below. We were indoors most of the time. Yep, I am so glad to be back home – CA- where it was stunningly 70 degrees. Does it ever get that cold where you live?? We are in NH, so it’s been FREEZING! I think it’s supposed to warm up to 50 this weekend! The kids missed 2 days of school and had a 90 minute delay after Christmas break.

This week it has been really cold. On Tuesday it was 2°, but in the Blizzard of ’93 we got to -22°. So, we do on rare occasions experiences extreme colds in our area. Yeah, we are supposed to be in the 50s this weekend, too. Yay!

Me, either! For the most part here in the Tennessee Valley our weather is quite mild in the winter, so it’s usually perfect for us. Our colds are tolerable because they normally do not hang around too long, but here we are day three and I’m tired of it. The current temp has finally gotten above freezing. Yay!
