Battle of the Bands,  Monday's Music Moves Me

We’re boogieing to #signlanguage songs!

McGuffy’s Reader is the brain-child behind “SPARKS” of inspiration.

Good morning, Kittens and Dawgs! How was your weekend?  Here we are facing yet another month slipping away all too quickly.  I’d surely like to tell life to throw on the brakes just for a bit so I can catch my breathe but I just don’t think that’s gonna happen.  This month’s honorary co-host is challenging us to share “two songs in sign language and same two in non-signed “.   I can’t attest to the accuracy of the signing ib these as the only signing I ever knew once upon a time was the alphabet and these days I barely remember that.  Time plays cruel tricks on your brain.  Anywho, hopefully you’ll enjoy my picks all the same, since “THIS IS ME” I’m just “HAPPY”.

Do you have tunes to share?  Excellent! I want you join fellow co-hosts: XmasDolly (Party Coordinator), StacyAlana, and  Colette one the dance floor.  Miss Colette isn’t actively co-hosting because of eye problems but you might find her boogieing. Keep those prayers going, please!  A special thank you to this month’s quest co-host, Michelle. You rocked!

A couple of weeks ago in my mid-month BoTB I pitted the sunshine twins, Donny & Marie Osmond against two legendary talents Rod Stewart & Tina Turner covering “It Takes Two”.   R&T hit the stage full force stealing votes but D&M clawed their way onto  center stage and just for a brief period I thought perhaps the sunshine twins had a shot at it.  In the end, it wasn’t meant to be Rod & Tina commanded the show (and my vote) winning this battle 12 to 6.

I will leave you with these two songs by today’s BoTB winners signed by the same lady who does a beautiful job.  I can feel the expression her signing, can you?

Keep those tunes playing, your body swaying, and I’ll be boogieing over to see you soon.  I’ll be keeping my posting schedule to only per week throughout next month as well with hopes of returning to my full blogging routine after Labor Day.  I hope to see y’all back on the dance floor next week for your choice song picks on Monday’s Mewsic Moves Me!

This is so weird but I left a comment here yesterday or a few days ago, I can’t remember which now. I came back to see if you had answered me back but I don’t see my comment here. Did you ever get it? I remember writing it because I commented on your battle results and almost voting for Donny & Marie.

Hmm, anyway, I’ll try again. I don’t remember what all I wrote but I liked the songs you chose and that particular interpreter. This was a really fun theme.

Hope you’re having a good weekend. I’m skipping this coming Monday. I need a catchup week…
Let me know if you ever saw that earlier comment I posted…

      Michele,

Yes, I got your comment. You left it on my ‘Wally World or Bust’ post. 🙂 I’m delighted you liked the theme so much. I thought it was more fun seeing what others came up with than what I found for my contribution. Thanks for letting me know you’re not boogieing tomorrow but I do understand. Have a good week, dearie!

Did I somehow miss your Battle with “It Takes Two”? It’s been crazy for me over the past weeks.

When I think of signing in songs I always think of Hawaiian music and hula dancing.

      Lee,

It appears you did miss out on this battle but don’t worry about it. 🙂 Oh, yes I forgot Hawaiians dancers sign. That would’ve been super cool to include had it crossed my brain. I may have to go in search of YT vids to share in the future. 🙂 Thanks for stopping by, my friend.

This was an interesting challenge and I had come across a couple of Happy ASL interpretations while doing my research- I really enjoyed the one you found – it was done so well and would entertain anyone, whether or not they know ASL. This was a unique challenge and I think we all got into it. Plus, this is the first I heard of the Greatest Showman, so it was educational, too. Have a Happy week, Cathy and good luck with your new Music Moves Me duties!

    • Cathy Kennedy

      Alana,

I think everyone did a fantastic job coming up with songs with/without signing. It was different and interesting to not only do my own digging but to see what others came up with, too.

Thanks for the good wishes when I fill-in for Marie while she’s recuperating from back surgery in a few weeks and I hope I don’t disappoint her! *fingers crossed* I know you and the others will keep me straight. 🙂

Signing is fascinating and I admire those that do it. Sorry I missed your BotB! Tina Turner is fabulous and gets my vote anytime.

    • Cathy Kennedy

      Eugenia,

Don’t worry about missing out on my BoTB. I’ll have another mid-August. Maybe, you’ll get a chance to play along at that time. 🙂 Tina & Rod did a great job on “It Takes Two”. Hmmm, I wonder if they did any other duets? Methinks I need to check into that!

    • Cathy Kennedy

      Michelle,

Thanks! You know, I should’ve asked do you use signing? I’m glad you felt I stepped up to the challenge but many others on the dance floor blew me away with their selections. Great theme!

    • Cathy Kennedy

      Ellen,

Choosing songs that featured sign language was a challenge but it’s also been a lot of fun to see what others came up with, too. I’m really glad Michelle came up with this theme.

  • XmasDolly

I must say Rod Steward & Tina Turner is my favorite tune here today, but the others are good too… I never turn away 95% of music that anyone plays… ROCK ON Girlfriend! Hope your day is rockin’ and rollin’ your way! HUGS

    • Cathy Kennedy

      Marie,

I hear you, I won’t turn away most mewsic either. About the only thing I don’t tolerate well is rap. Thanks for boogieing with me, my friend. Take it easy and know that you’re in my prayers. XOXO

        • Cathy Kennedy

          John,

I thought the theme unique but I was a bit like you initially. However, I got more enthused by what others shared. Not everyone signs equally. Some I can feel the rhythm of the mewsic through their gestures while others distract and all I see is jerky, busy hands/arms movement. When that happens I just skip to the next one. It sure does make me appreciate my hearing more because I guess I didn’t realize fully how it effected me.

Wow, I loved the ASL music video of “This is Me”. ASL in song is always more poetic than speaking, but I really enjoy how visually beautiful the language is. I surprised myself with how many of the signs I understood. Just like any language, of course, it doesn’t translate word by word, but rather idea by idea. And “Happy,” already being an expressive song, translated very well. I noticed that the Deaf Film Camp recreated the music video in ASL, down to matching the dance sequences when we don’t actually see someone singing. It was amazing!
But then, Language is amazing, isn’t it?

    • Cathy Kennedy

      Jen,
It’s great seeing you on the dance floor boogieing to our interesting theme and I believe my first-time use of sign language on 4M. Sometimes I’m not sure if it’s actually the signing or the mewsic that makes causes me to see the beauty in the translation. I know the way someone moves his/her body through expressive hand gestures and facial expressions I certainly feel or see the beauty. Not all signers are equal. Personality really plays a big part in it all, in my opinion. That all being said, I do admire and appreciate the art behind the silence of mewsic. Lanugague is an amazing thing.

  • Jacqui Murray

This is a keeper, Cathy. I have a collection (small) of sign language books for my early readers,as much to show them how it’s not so different as to beautifully tell a story. These would be nice for my high schoolers.

    • Cathy Kennedy

      Jacqui,

There a lot of good sign language videos on YouTube. I never really looked into before now and after seeing what others on the dance floor is sharing I’m even more amazed. Thanks for dropping by!

  • DrillerAA

I truly enjoyed “The Greatest Showman”, not something that men are supposed to admit to, but my wife says it’s okay. Still, you gotta hand it Tina Turner. She was an icon for years and years. Thanks for stopping by Driller’s Place.

    • Cathy Kennedy

      Driller,

I haven’t seen “The Greatest Showman” but I’ve heard a few songs from the soundtrack. I will have to look into the flick. Tina Turner is a legend in the industry. I’m not a true fan but I certainly appreciate her charismatic presence when she performs, not that I’ve ever seen her live or anything but from TV shows and YouTube vids. Thanks for the return visit and dance.

  • Comedy Plus

    Loved, This Is Me. Wow.

I figured Tina would win. Glad she did.

Aww on that adorable kitty. So precious and thanks for linking up.

Have a fabulous day and week, Cathy. Love you. ♥

  • Thomas Anderson

    Hi, Cathy!

This is the first time I have been exposed to sign language song videos on YouTube. They are fascinating to behold and a blessing for those who need and benefit by them. I was already familiar with the Pharrell Williams multi-platinum single “Happy” and I enjoyed watching the sign interpretation and performance. I have not yet seen the 2017 musical The Greatest Showman and enjoyed the soundtrack song “This Is Me” sung by Keala Settle. The signing performance was very touching.

I am happy to know that your ears matched mine in your latest band battle. Rod and Tina are formidable heavyweight contenders and it makes sense that they garnered twice the votes. Released in 1988, “Forever Young” is one of my favorite songs by the Rodster. The video was played on the MTV station where I worked. Released on the first of May, 1984, Tina Turner’s “What’s Love Got to Do with It” is linked in my mind to the exciting new chapter of my life as a Florida resident, having moved down from Pennsylvania only a few weeks earlier. Tina’s video also played heavily on my channel. It was interesting to watch that woman signing both songs for the hearing impaired.

Thank you very much for this great mewsic to start my day, dear friend Cathy. Enjoy your week!

    • Cathy Kennedy

      Tom,

It appears you left the same comment twice, so I deleted the one that you used only your email address for sign-in. I hope that was ok. I’m delighted you enjoyed the pop songs in sign, as well as the female signer featuring Tina & Rod songs. She does a beautiful job! I would love to (sorta) know how to sign like this! In regards to my battle. It was a tough decision. Part of me wanted to vote for D&M because of nostalgia because I loved watching their TV show as kid but it really was not much of a contest with the seasoned singers owning their cover with distinctive vocals and energy. Thanks for popping by, my friend.
