Battle of the Bands

Tomorrow Never Dies BOTB Showdown

Pierce Brosnan returned as 007 in the 18th James Bond thriller, Tomorrow Never Dies.  The artist to perform the theme song for the 1997 was Sheryl Crow.  There really isn’t a large number of cover recordings of this song.  After sampling severals choices, I narrowed it down to the two I wanted in this showdown.  In this battle it’ll be female versus male. May the best vocals win!

Kindly turn your attention toward center stage for the first performance. Let’s give it up for contender #1 ON!

I have no clue of the identity of the gal or the guitarist. The info associated with the video didn’t divulge their identity. If anyone knows whose behind the sheet, please share this with us!

Up next is another new-to-me discovery. Let’s give a round of applauds to contender #2, Matija Tatomirovic!

Which artist is the best, ON or Matija Tatomirovic? Leave your vote in comments!

I invite you to visit BoTBers with showdowns going on today.

*Unless noted, all other participants will present two battles per month on the 1st & 15th

Polls close noon (EST) on Jun 6th

I like Pierce Bronson. He made a movie in a town I lived in and he made a point of getting to know the people of the town. As for the vote it is Matija Tatomirovic I love his voice and the music is excellent.

      Nicole,

Pierce Bronson seems likable. I always liked him as Remington Steele. He was a good James Bond and was happy they finally cast him. Your vote has been recorded for Matija Tatomirovic.

  • Debbie D.

Hi Cathy, I don’t remember this song, but saw the movie. Hmm…Anyway, I much preferred the second contender. More Bond-like. 🙂

    • Cathy Kennedy

      Debbie,

I don’t remember much about any of the Bond films after Roger Moore was cast as 007 much less the songs. When I hear them, I do recognize them most of the time, though. I have you down for Matija Tatomirovic. Thanks for voting, my friend!

We go with the second one two. It is strange, I really don’t remember that tune or much about the movie.

    Hi Cathy!
Both videos are atmospheric; the first one is positively beguiling! The second one sounds more like a Bond song, but lacks the vocal quality. A vote for the female, please 😉

      Diedre,

Cool ON!gets a second vote!! I was growing fearful they weren’t going to grab anymore. Thanks for visiting and playing along. 😉

I have no idea who the two people behind the sheet are in the ON video, but I wasn’t that impressed with them. I was somewhat impressed with Matija Tatomirovic, on the other hand, who exhibited some dynamics in his version, so I vote for him.

Have you done the theme from “Casino Royale,” “You Know My Name,” yet?

    • Cathy Kennedy

      John,

No, I haven’t gotten to Casino Royale’s theme, “You Know My Name”. That’s slated for September 1st BOTB.

I have you down for Matija Tatomirovic. Thanks for voting!

    Howdy, CAThy! It’s That You!!

A happy Wednesday to you and yourn.

I liked how that first rendition began so simply with the thumping of those low notes. And interesting video concept, too. The vocal wasn’t bad at all, but it was a bit too high-pitched for me. (I’m reminded of Joan Baez, who always grated on my nerves.)

The Matija Tatomirovic version was pretty cool. Maybe half-a-shade overly dramatic but this IS a James Bond theme song, after all, so it’s fitting.

Please chalk up a BOTB bote for Mr. Tatomirovic.

Get a goot juan, my friend!

      Stephen,

The theatrics is what makes a James Bond Theme Song what everyone has come to expect and love. Matija Tatomirovic snags another tally!

I can’t recall ever having heard this song. If this is a Bond theme then I’m not overly impressed when put up against all the others.

The minimalism of the version by ON was interesting, but tended to get annoyingly boring to me. I much preferred the second guy.

Give my vote to Matija T (he should change his stage name to this shortened version).

      Lee,

After Roger Moore the theme songs aren’t as good as the earlier ones and finding covers for artists’ works after Roger Moore’s departure as Bond has gotten tricky in the last several battles. I’m sure it won’t improve, either.

      Matija Tatomirovic takes another vote.

  • Birgit

I love this Bond movie because Michelle Yeoh kicks ass and was a strong female lead. I was hoping she eould get ger own spy movie. Anyhoo, I listened to both but prefer the mystery female as she gave this song an etherial feel.

    • Cathy Kennedy

      Birgit,

I half expected Michelle Yeoh to get spin-off spy series, too. Although, she did a fine job and not nearly as bad as today’s strong female leads, I’m not one for these types of roles for women.

ON! gets their first vote. Thanks for playing in this round, my friend!

  • Sandee

My vote goes to contender #2, Matija Tatomirovic. A much better sound.

Have a fabulous day and rest of the week, Cathy. Love and hugs. ♥

    Hi, Cathy!

Happy June 1, BOTB Day and Almost Wordless Wednesday, dear friend! I hope all is well on your side of the screen and that you and your family had a nice holiday weekend.

As far as I’m concerned, Sean Connery was the real James Bond, but I liked Pierce Brosnan as Remington Steele, and he would be my second choice for the 007 role. However, I haven’t seen him in action as that character. I listened to Sheryl Crow’s original soundtrack recording of “Tamale Never Dies,” and I listened to the two versions in your contest. It might be that my ears are on the blink, but to me it sounded like all three artists needed to strain their voices to sing the song. Both videos in your contest are a bit creepy, but creepy is AOK in my book as long as I enjoy the performance. It was a tough decision, because, once again, it sounded like both vocalists, the mystery female vocalist in the mystery duo ON, and gravel voiced Norwegian singer Matija Tatomirovic, drifted off key at times, enough to bother me a little. I went to Matija’s YouTube channel and played his hard cover of Cutting Crew’s “Died In Your Arms.” I liked it a lot.

So, in the end, I vote for Matija’s version because it’s different, it’s David Lynch – Lost Highway creepy but good, while ON’s version is David Lynch creepy but slightly less pleasing to my Shirley Bassey spoiled ears.

Enjoy the rest of your week, dear friend Cathy!

    • Cathy Kennedy

      Tom,

Sean Connery is 007 no doubt about it. All the others are copy Cathys.

Thanks for being the first to cast your vote in this battle for Matija Tatomirovic, my friend!
