Thursday Thoughts: Amazing Grace
Amazing Grace is one of the most beloved hymnals of all times and over the years various church denominations adopted it in their song books. Author John Newton of this timeless piece was not a writer, but being from the era that he was where journals and letters were often kept as a daily ritual, Newton describes a time in his life where he was that wretched soul who once was lost, but now am found.
As a Christian, I can relate to that despaired sense of being unworthy and lost for all eternity. It was like walking through endless darkness, …was blind…not knowing where to go for God’s amazing grace shined on me…but now I see… the evening of July 4, 1976.
This song speaks to my heart like no other gospel hymn. Allow me to share God’s amazing grace through music this morning.
Read the inspiration behind Chris Tomlin, singer/songwriter, rewrite of an old classic hymn and then listen below.
Isn’t this a beautiful version?
Would you like to learn more about John Newton, if so read about it, here!

Beautiful song…wonderful post. There are many songs that I love…many that are connected to a time, place, event, person.
Blessings & Aloha!
Thank you also for stopping by and your sweet comment.

LOVE Chris Tomlin’s version. Adding the part about “my chains are gone” is the part that really speaks to me. So many of us are captives unaware — we know not what has a hold on our life; keeping us from God’s great plan and love.
But one of my big faves is also by Chris: Amazing Love.
Amazing Love, how can it be?
That You, My King – should die for Me?
Amazing love,
I know it’s true.
It’s my joy to honor You,
In all I do, I honor You.

There are many songs that touches me in special ways. Although I can’t think of any names right now…It is usually a memory….Ahhh, I have one. It’s a religious song that my dad always love to sing. It always brings me tears, as the song is a giving song and he is so giving in so many ways.

There are songs like that touch my heart, as well. I often think on many of the old hymnals I listened to as a child in church.

One of my favorite hymns. Thanks for the reminder of how it came to be. A slaver becomes a minister.

This song is an awesome hymnal Cathy! I have heard it at weddings, funerals etc. The words are so powerful. Thanks for hosting and sharing the information and videos.

At weddings? Really? That’s interesting, coz I have not heard Amazing Grace sung at one. Usually just in regular church services and funerals is all. It truly is a beautiful song, though.

Love the rewrite of Tomlin the most, and his personal style that speaks so intimately. Also clicked onto the Celtic one – the instrumental part is my favorite – what a spectacle!

That is a beautiful song and it’s one I hold dear to my heart but anytime anyone asks me about a song I hold dear I automatically sing The Beatles “All You Need Is Love”.

I have many non-religious songs that comfort me, but you know, I can’t think of a single name of one at the moment. Isn’t that funny?

I like the song too, especially when it’s a nice singer !

Cathy, I so enjoy this inspiring song also!!! I always stop whatever I’m doing when I hear it. You made my morning.
Also, yes, I stopped Thursday Theme Song a while ago, ’cause only and handful of bloggers [and not even that many at times] would participate.
I will add a link to your site on my post I just published this morning since I added my blog link to your Linky Tool today.
Have a safe week ahead, and see you again soon, I hope!!
