Thursday Art Date

TADwRain week 4 #art theme ‘GARDEN’

Why does this not surprise me that Rain came up with ‘Garden‘ as this week’s challenge? 😀

My garden inspiration came from the sketch design I used for my sister’s birthday card.

June makes me think hydrangeas. My late MIL had bunches of hydrangea bushes bordering the house and along the fence near the road.  The big pom-pom shaped blooms in their glorious vivid shades of blues, purples, and pinks always made me smile.

Although this is not a representation of my late in-laws walk leading to their home, I loved the homey feel.

The various tools to create an illustration in Procreate is fairly forgiving allowing impurrfections to give your drawing character or at least that’s my opinion.

One thing I hope to pursue someday is painting but for now, take my Procreate creation and run it through a paint app called Brushstroke which is kinda cool.  Tell me what you think.

If you’re a painter then you’ll spot that it’s a fake oil painting but for the untrained eye such mine I like how the digital effect creates a soft brushstroke texture.  I’m not sure what it’s like to paint with oil or acrylic or watercolors but maybe I don’t have to be spot on with my sketching to give my scene the right illusion.  I don’t know what to expect with this medium and hope someone can offer advice since I consider myself quite the beginner.

When I first began sketching in 2017, I illustrated a pencil drawing of a small garden scene with a lamp post.

I want to do another pencil drawing of this illustration or a reinvented scene.  I have trouble making some aspects of my picture appear 3-D, like the sidewalk in this design as well as the one above.  Patience and practice will eventually allow me the vision to nail it.

Thanks for stopping in with your coffee for a peek at my masterpiece and …oh yeah for not spilling it on my artwork lol .  It’s been a super pleasure to share my sprinkle of talent I have with you this morning. 😘 If you like to see what others are bringing to the art play date, then I invite you to high tail it over to Rain’s Garden to browse through the gallery of artistry!

I’ll be back tomorrow with an edition of Friday Fun Stuff chockful of giggles, fill-ins, & more! Come join the fun!

The three hydrangeas drawing is lovely. I like that this is spare.

I don’t know much about procreate but I like imperfections in art because it’s part of creating. The Brushstroke effect looks good but I think I prefer your drawing without it.

I like your garden scene sketch, it looks great.

    Have a lovely day.

      Lissa,

It’s interesting I like other artists’ impurrfections better than my own. lol I’m trying to be less hard on myself and just go with the flow of things. I appreciate your support. Thanks for stopping by!

Lovely Cathy – I create almost all my art with pixels now – nothing wrong with that! You’ve created some beautiful images here. Pixel based art is an art all on its own – I LOVE it!

      Gilly,

I like creating however the mood strikes and it’s fun to see how inventive others can be, too. Thanks for rallying with me and not seeing the shortcut as anything but fun creativity. 🙂

First I love your new header. Awesome.

You know how much I love your sketches.

Have a fabulous day, Cathy. Love and hugs. ♥

Your hydrangeas in the first sketch is truly so beautiful. I love this flower. The next one looks so pretty and I think you did a pretty good job creating a good perspective of the sidewalk and flowers. The one you created on the computer reminds me of the impressionist work. With practice, you will get better and better and taking a watercolour class will teach you even more

Cathy, you’re welcome 🙂 Just wanted to say, ALL of Bob Ross’ tv shows are on his You Tube channel. Actually Alex and I were remembering one of his tv shows where he starts off introducing the audience to his baby squirrel lol…and he painted most of the show with it in his pocket, so Alex put the two little babies in his pocket last night and they stayed there for hours! Btw, we found a THIRD one!!!

Oh WOW, a 3rd squirrel! I’d keep my ears perked. You might find more. It’s kind of like mice. I always say, if you see one expect more and I’m usually right. One winter we caught 6. I really hate mice, too!

      Debbie,

Thank you for taking the time to visit and to peek at today’s art contribution. It’s good having loyal friends stopping regularly. 😉

Hi Cathy :)) As soon as I saw your drawing, I immediately said out loud “Hydrangeas!!!!” I LOVE those flowers and you did a great job with them! I was so tempted to plant some this year, but I want to wait until we have the forever home for my perennial flower garden!! I love how your late MIL’s flowers were set up and how you drew them. 🙂 The brushstroke app makes it really look like a watercolour!

My painting advice, because I’ve been and still consider myself in the beginner/learning stage, is follow instructions at first. A lot of folks dive right into it and are good at the get go. (When I say “good” I mean subjectively, they feel good painting)…in my case, I started with oils and I followed the Joy of Painting series on PBS. Bob Ross’s instructions are purrfectly easy to follow, you just need the right tools. Oils are expensive and messy but a lot of fun because they blend so well! They take days to dry though and canvas is the best thing to use, which can get expensive and honestly I ran out of wall space lol!

I then went to acrylic because I was low on art funds! I used Bob Ross’s techniques with the acrylics too and just recently started to watch You Tube tutorials to brush up (purrden the pun) my painting skills! I switched to watercolour simply because it’s the least expensive. But I fell in love with it. Again, I followed You Tube tutorials at first until I felt comfy with that medium. There are lots of fun techniques to learn! I only started to do original stuff this year after painting for the last 6 years. I didn’t have my confidence to make up my own stuff for a long time. I would browse images online and paint them in my own style, nothing wrong with that! It’s how you learn right? If you love drawing, I think you’ll love painting, there is more freedom in it (in my opinion!) 🙂

I like your lamp post drawing! I’m not good at drawing at all, I can copy if I have an image in front of me, like the Bugs/Daffy one today. That didn’t come without me studying the original and the Looney Toon faces…lots of erasing went into that one lol! I think your walkway looks great! I’m not very good with perspective, but I will say at the bottom of your drawing, the path looks closer because it’s darker and wider.

I have to find time to pull away from all of the varmints to catch up on your other posts!!! 🙂 Thanks for joining the art date today!!! 🙂

      Rain,

I wanted so much to bring back some of my MIL’s hydrangea plants when we collected our things in September but that was a super stressful time. The new owner, the 24/7 caregiver of my late FIL, was nearly as cooperative r warm with our presences even though we were removing some of our purrsonal things or the things left to DH in the will. We couldn’t even get everything that we had storage back there because we didn’t have a place for it here. We just had to do the best that we could and hopefully, we’ll not have regrets later for our quick decisions. It’s only possessions and the only reason I wanted the stuff is for sentimental reasons only. Oh well that’s the breaks as they say. Maybe, I’ll by some hydrangea bushes for our new home someday. That would be awesome. Thanks for all the advice on painting. I love Bob Ross and whenever I begin painting I will check him out on YouTube for instructions. You do a great job with your paintings and sketches. Your Looney Tunes are always so much fun. 🙂 I’m thinking ahead for next week’s art challenge, until then have a doodletastic day!
