Purrs and hooowdys, Kittens & Dawgs!  The new iPhone 8 launches today. YAY! Right? NO! I admit not everyone is ecstatic about this news but I am because we’ll soon be proud owners. Apple makes incredible phones. Ours are four years old and work extremely well considering all things but…we’re experiencing serious battery issues. In fact, mine drained completely down one day leaving me without communications while away from home and DH. That’s scary. Anywho, today Friday Sillies contribution I’m sharing smartphone humor with you. Enjoy!

When I bought my iPhone, I thought about the 30-year business I ran with 186 employees, all without a cell phone that plays music, takes videos, pictures and communicates with Facebook and Twitter. I signed up under duress for Twitter and Facebook, so my seven kids, their spouses, my 13 grand kids and 2 great grand kids could communicate with me in the modern way. I figured I could handle something as simple as Twitter with only 140 characters of space.

My phone was beeping every three minutes with the details of everything except the bowel movements of the entire next generation. I am not ready to live like this. I keep my cell phone in the garage in my golf bag.

The kids bought me a GPS for my last birthday because they say I get lost every now and then going over to the grocery store or library. I keep that in a box under my tool bench with the Blue tooth [it’s red] headset I am supposed to use when I drive. I wore it once and was standing in line at Wal-Mart talking to my wife and everyone within 50 yards was glaring at me. I had to take my hearing aid out to use it, and I got a little loud.

I mean the GPS looked pretty smart on my dash board, but the lady inside that gadget was the most annoying, rudest person I had run into in a long time. Every 10 minutes, she would sarcastically say, “Re-calc-u-lating.”

You would think that she could be nicer. It was like she could barely tolerate me. She would let go with a deep sigh and then tell me to make a U-turn at the next light. Then if I made a right turn instead. Well, it was not a good relationship…

When I get really lost now, I call my wife and tell her the name of the cross streets and while she is starting to develop the same tone as Gypsy, the GPS lady, at least she loves me.

To be perfectly frank, I am still trying to learn how to use the cordless phones in our house. We have had them for 4 years, but I still haven’t figured out how I lose three phones all at once and have to run around digging under chair cushions, checking bathrooms, and the dirty laundry baskets when the phone rings.

The world is just getting too complex for me.

They even mess me up every time I go to the grocery store. You would think they could settle on something themselves but this sudden “Paper or Plastic?” every time I check out just knocks me for a loop. I bought some of those cloth reusable bags to avoid looking confused, but I never remember to take them with me.

Now I toss it back to them. When they ask me, “Paper or plastic?” I just say, “Doesn’t matter to me. I am bi-sacksual.” Then it’s their turn to stare at me with a blank look. I was recently asked if I tweet. I answered, “No, but I do fart a lot.”

P.S. I know some of you are not over age 70. I sent it to you to allow you to forward it to those who are. I figured your sense of humor could handle it. We senior citizens don’t need any more gadgets. The TV remote and the garage door remote are about all we can handle.

Next segment is for all you photo enthusiasts and Skywatch Friday fans. Here is this week’s contribution, a Patriotic Victorian Home with beautiful blue skies!

What are you celebrating?

Today, I Celebrate The Small Things  although this isn’t really small to me but God’s presence through the tough patches and the soothing effect that mewsic offers when turmoil engulfs my soul.

I celebrate the cloud artwork in the sky, the sun’s kiss on my skin and gentle breeze that brushes over me, a healthy body with two strong legs to walk a mile between appointments and the pain that follows because I know all is truly well.

One last thing I celebrate. It’s not as important as the other celebrations but I’m happy all the same for the successful upgrade to iOS11 on my iPhone 5s. It could’ve gone wrong so I’m celebrating. Keeping our devices updated is an essential and I’m surprised at how well it handles the new software. Apple products always blow me away!

 

Switching gears, I’m rounding things out with these Friendly Fill-Ins hosted by the lovely, Annie and Ellen!

  1. I would never be friends with someone who maliciously wish to harm me, my family, or friends. I will never entertain a relationship with the enemy and if I do not know the so-called friend’s initial intent then when his/her true face is known it ends immediately. I will pray for this person but trust again? Only with God’s direction will I give this person another chance.
  2. I will never refuse the prayers of others. In the words of my late MIL, “We need all the prayers we can get”.
  3. I have never been to the Pacific northwest but I hope one day that we can travel along the west coast highway. I, especially want to see the lighthouses dotting the shoreline.
  4. When it comes to my children, I would do most anything in my power/budget to help them but when it infringes on our well-being or compromises our financial obligations then I have to say no. We all need help once in a while but the brunt of THIS burden belongs to us and a child should NEVER use his/her emotional connection as leverage. That is wrong!

 

In closing, let me share the results of Sept. 15th BoTB, Total Eclipse of the Heart.

When I pulled together the violin, guitar, and panflute cover artists for this battle I knew instantly I preferred the haunting, romantic sound of the panflute best. The other instrumentals are nice but the panflute spoke to my heart earning my vote.

The final outcome…

Violin cover – 3
Guitar cover – 4
Panflute – 4

 

The winner… I don’t have one this round! 🙁 I’m happy the consensus liked the instrumental covers reflecting my own sentiments to not have to pick a cover vocalist over Bonnie Tyler (even though she wasn’t one of the choices).

      I can forgive, too. But, I’m always a bit suspicious of someone who has wronged me. That’s just being human, I guess. I don’t know if that old Victorian house is haunted but I did notice it was up for sale. I looked it up on my realtor app and it had a hefty price tag, especially for the location which really surprised me. I loved old homes like this, though.

    I’ve never been to the Pacific Northwest either. I have cousins over there in Washington State that, as far as I know, I have never met. I hope you’ll get to take that ride and see the lighthouses someday.

    Though I have an iPhone, I feel much the same way as the dude in the story that you shared, which was very funny, by the way. Things are getting just too bloomin’ complicated out there. It doesn’t help that once I get something figured out they have to “improve” it. That’s why I’m never on FB, too many changes.

      I agree, my MIL was a wise woman! I appreciate the prayers for my aunt. I haven’t heard anything in a few days, so I guess I’d best check in with my cousin’s wife to see what’s going on. Once upon a time I didn’t get the whole “smartphone” thing and felt it was something I could do without but after I got my first iPhone I was hooked instantly, then I got DH on the bandwagon. The things we can do at our fingertips is amazing. I think smartphone technology is invaluable and a must have, not so much for the social aspect of it but the conveniences it offers, like GPS, telephone directory, business locator, restaurant menus, or other sorts of things like this that once was difficult is now made easy in the palm of your hand. Improvements are always coming down the pike and there is always a learning curve but once you get the knack of it then it does get easier. Have a blessed day, my friend!

        It is totally amazing the power we hold in our hands when we have a smartphone – a calculator, a computer, a phone, and, most importantly, a camera. 🙂 So many things are crammed into these phone that it is unreal and great!

          I checked in with my cousin’s wife about my aunt and found out Sharon is making slow progress. She’s off the ventilator and responding to the antibiotics. They do something else (with a tube) to help her with her breathing. I’m not sure what that’s called now or how it works exactly but anyhow, the doctor said she has a long way to go yet, so please continue to lift her up in prayer. God is the great physician!

      Yeah, this post was a bit looong! I’m trying to figure out how to go about sharing with others but tend to go overboard. I hope it wasn’t too much to deal with in order to find my SWF contribution. Thanks for stopping in for a visit and I’m glad you liked the old home. I love seeing places like this and it’s romantic to dream about living in one but I don’t think I’d ever move in one. 🙂

    Hi, Cathy!

    I’m afraid I would be the first in line to buy the new and improved noPhone. 🙂 All my life I have resisted modern technology. I needed to be dragged kicking and screaming into the computer age. Yes, I admit that I am thankful for my computer and glad I learned how to use it, but when it comes to phones I have no desire to keep up with the latest. Actually I have always hated talking on the telephone and to this day I only use a phone when it is absolutely necessary. I ignore most of the whistles and bells that come with it. I have never used a phone to take a picture or a video. I have Blogger and YouTube accounts but never joined F-book and have no intention of doing so. My days are already filled to the brim with activity and I do not wish to further complicate my life with additional social media connections or the latest gadgetry.

    I am pleased to see such an even spread of votes in your latest BOTB. Based on the early voting I thought for sure the violin was going to win. The pan flute has a soothing, calming effect, doesn’t it? Here’s wishing you and DH a safe and happy weekend, dear friend Cathy!

      I’m sorry for the delay in responding but the weekends, especially this one, is always busy for us. DH got his phone on Friday. Mine was expected to deliver, but got held up in Memphis for some unknown reason. I thought I’d be forced to wait until today to get it but we took a chance while out on Saturday afternoon to stop by the facility holding my phone and the guy was kind to release it to us despite protocol. It was the carriers fault mine didn’t arrive at my doorstep, so I was VERY happy this guy was able to help. So, we walked away with a giddy gal waiting to get her new phone home to activate. 🙂 Sunday, we milled around town just a bit before going to the store to pick up a few items and here we are in a new week again.

      For someone who had to be pushed into the computer age, you’ve adapted pretty well. I love technology and the conveniences it offers me but I’m not so enthralled by it that I can’t keep my eyes off my phone. I once was the opposite in the early years I loved talking on the phone! It was an excellent way to stay in touch with family and friends far away but then the unexpected thing happened after getting sucked into the social media world…I began feeling withdrawal and less chatty. The need to actually speak via phone melted away. Oh, I’m happy to do it once I’m actually talking to someone but taking the initiative is the hardest part and a hurdle I often do not want to jump. I agree social media is a huge time and energy drainer. I’ve been on Facebook since 2004. In the beginning, I spent a lot of time there mostly playing games and learning what’s happening with old friends but I broke that habit after getting involved with blogging in 2010. It didn’t happen all at once but once I managed to get FB’s claws out of my skin I was all the happier for it. I have a Twitter account which is tied to my blog to auto-tweet my posts and I’ll tweet other bloggers posts and on occasion something that interesting. I have Bloglovin’, Pinterest, and YouTube accounts but the thing that keeps me the busiest is blogging. I love, love blogging!

      My BoTB was a near split down the line, wasn’t it? I’m not sure if this has happened before. Although I knew from the beginning my pick would be the pan flute, I thought the violin would win. The battle was intersting and fun. Enjoy this last week of September, my friend. I just can’t believe how fast the days are melting away, can you?

      If we can’t find our iPhones never happens but should it happen then we can access iCloud on a computer and we can ring our device from there. That’s really cool. Our home phones do this, though. When the kids were at home, they would leave the handset they used places they couldn’t find so the locator feature on the base unit was invaluable. 🙂 Thanks for dropping by!

      There’s always something to learn with the iPhone. Apple supports the heck out of their phones which we totally love! DH’s new phone arrived today but mine hasn’t arrived yet. I haven’t played with his yet. It’s nice looking, though. The buy who wrote that joke really cracked me up. The bi-sacksual line really floored me. I’d love to use this line but there aren’t too many stores who have paper and plastic anymore. I preferred paper years ago. I’m sure it’s all recycled now and ain’t worth a dime. The plastic bags aren’t anything to get excited about, but I’m not going to buy the reusable ones to tot in and out of the store, they have to store them in-between use. That’s just a big ole headache. Oh well…the story was a funny one which made me smile all the way through it and that’s what I needed. 😀

    I am one of the 13% of the adults who still don’t have a smart phone. There’s no good reason except that I always seem to have another way to spend my money. However, it’s getting very hard to do business without one, so I may have to breakdown and take the plunge. However, I don’t think I’ll be starting with an iphone 8. The comics gave me chuckle this morning. Thanks for posting them.
