Battle of the Bands

Piece of My Heart #BoTB showdown 3rd round

It’s the weekend and weekends means, no Cathy in Blogosphere. DH gets all of my attention. Sorry, lovelies this is my precious time to spend with the love of my life! 😉

In November I dedicated both showdowns to Erma Franklin’s song that Janis Joplin popularized and here I am with a third addition but it’s not the battle you hoped for Stephen. Not yet anyhow, so will there be more? Only time will tell the tale.

I’m going country in this battle featuring two male vocalists. Let’s meet the contestants.

Opponent #1 Nathan Carter is a young fellow, an Irish country singer who happens to share the same birth year and month as DD#2. Isn’t that cool? Maybe not to you, but I think so. Nathan began his career in 2007. On his 2014 album, Time of My Life, he covered (Take Another Little)Piece of My Heart.

Opponent # 2 John Hartford was an American folk, country and bluegrass artist (death 2001). I don’t think I’d ever heard of this Hall of Famer before now but he’d been in the mewsic business for decades and interestingly he was born the year before my dad (1938). In 1984 John album, Gum Tree Canoe hit the market nearly 20 years after Joplin’s song release, he included his cover Piece of My Heart as one of the tracks.

Who gets your vote, Nathan Carter or John Hartford?

Remember there is no wrong vote, except a no vote. You don’t have to know the song or the artists, just pick the band that sounds the best to you. 😉

I saw John Hartford perform 5 shows, but never saw him do this song. I wish I had. He really sounded good here, with Jeannie Seely singing harmony with him…

John Hartford gets the nod from me. Thank you.

    • Cathy Kennedy

      Michael,

Jeannie Seely is a name I haven’t heard mentioned in a few years. I’m going to have to refresh my memory by listening to her mewsic in a bit. Thanks for playing along. I have you down for JOHN HARTFORD.

  • Cherdo

I like John Hartford back-in-the-day and I’m ashamed to admit I had no idea he had passed away! Wow. I’ll have to investigate that further.

As for this delightful battle, I’m gonna go with Nathan Carter this time. I like John, but this just ain’t his song and I lean more towards the Debbie D. category, in that I like the Janis Joplin version so much that it’s hard to cheerlead for any other version.

But your pole dancer pic…PRICELESS. IT’S A WINNER.

    • Cathy Kennedy

      Cherdo,

I didn’t know that John Hartford passed away, either. According to Wiki he passed June 4, 2001 of Non-Hodgkin Lymphoma. It’s interesting how certain entertainers’ deaths slip under your radar and when you find out, it’s like “I didn’t know that. Did you know?” It get where you’re coming from with when you like the original so much so that you can’t get behind the competing cover artists but appreciate you tossing your bote in for NATHAN CARTER, my friend.

  • Debbie D.

Hi Cathy; I’m with about taking the weekend off from blogging. We all need more personal time with family and friends. Hope you’re having a good one! As for the battle, I’m too much of a Janis Joplin fan to like either of these covers. Sorry! John Hartford has a better voice so I’ll pick him.

    • Cathy Kennedy

      Debbie,

No apologizes needed. I realize those who are hard rockers might find it especially difficult to pick between two non-rockers in this round, so I appreciate you being such a good sport and putting effort into it. Another bote for JOHN HARTFORD!

John Hartford for me, Cathy. His version fits the song well, IMO. Nathan’s version was a little too much bubble gum smacking for me. Great contest and love the pole dancer meme.

  • Birgit

I will go with John over Nathan who songs too much feel goodley oogley and I do like the the blue grass much more than country especially like the banjo

    • Cathy Kennedy

      Birgit,

This battle is turning out tighter than I first. Thanks for voting for JOHN HARTFORD. The bluegrass version is a lot better than I imagined it would be. 🙂

  • Mary B

    Hi Cathy!

John was a bit too twangy country for my tastes, and I really liked what Nathan Carter did with the tune. Sure, it had a bubble-gum country/pop sound to it, but it was most pleasing to my ears. Please give my vote to Nathan Carter.

Hope you’re having a great weekend!

      Mary,

I’m happy to see you playing along this month. You’ve been on my mind and in my prayers a lot. I have your bote recorded for NATHAN CARTER. Now to head over to see what you’re sharing in your BoTB showdown!

  • Stephen T. McCarthy

    CATHY ~
If I recall correctly, Robin “The Girl Wonder” once used this Nathan Carter guy in a BOTB and I liked him. It’s hard to forget an Irish Country Cowboy singer!! This guy’s really got a terrific voice.

I liked the John Hartford version, also. An excellent match-up, Cathy!

I’m pretty sure I voted for NATHAN CARTER when Robin used him, and I’m going to remain consistent by voting for him again. But it was a pleasure listening to both of these recordings this morning. Very, very nicely conceived contest!

      Stephen,

Yes, I do remember Robin ‘The Girl Wonder’. Whatever happened to her? I don’t know how you can remember who used what in these battles when I have trouble recalling what I do. You have a sharp mind, my friend. DH is like that, too. Hmmm, I wonder if it has anything to do with the type work you boys do? He’s also an electrical engineer. Thanks for voting for NATHAN CARTER, my friend. I’m heading over now to check out your latest BoTB!

  • John Holton

I’m voting for John Hartford. Nathan Carter is a little too “pop with cowboy hats” for me, while Hartford’s arrangement fit the song nicely.

    • Cathy Kennedy

      Binky,

Grumpy was such a funny kitty. I wonder if one of his grandkitties my take his place in the spotlight bestowing more grumpiness upon us? Thanks for voting for John Hartford. You have a good weekend, too, my little furriend.

    • Cathy Kennedy

      Brian,

Although, Joplin’s version is also a cover, it’s hard to mentally pull away from one’s favorite when you compare it to another. That’s really cool your dad saw the legendary Joplin at the historical Woodstock event, though. Thanks for voting for Nathan Carter. Have a good weekend, my furiend!

  • Arlee Bird

I’ll take either of these over the screaming Joplin version. Carter’s version is real good, but John Hartford made the song sound like it was supposed to be sung. He gave it a special charm.

    A vote for John Hartford.

      Lee,

The first vote tossed into the ballot goes to John Hartford. I like how you preserved John’s version having a ‘special charm’ and I’d have to agree.
