2022 A-Z Challenge

Nightingale Sings Her Song

This is the 15th day of the A to Z Challenge.  I can’t believe we’re half way through the month already.  I think my new creation of a Nightingale from 2017 turned out nicely.  Is it perfect? Nope but then I always see things that I can improve upon with ever art piece I produce and perhaps another time I’ll dabble with it more but for now here’s my Procreate recreation with a side-by-side comparison.

Thanks for allowing me to be a part of your day.  I’m heading over to the A2Z headquarters to leave my calling card and maybe I’ll take notice to see who else came to the party.  I’m flashing back to the 70s as I close things with music relating to my theme.  Instead of a song choice, I went with an artist, Maxine Nightingale with Right Back Where We Started From along with 13 additional songs in the below playlist. This is CAAC signing off, I’ll be back tomorrow with the next letter in the alphabet!

I flew in to admire your nightingale, and ended up looking at a picture of a wild bird looking through a window, gazing at a caged bird that wasn’t in your original version. Two different stories. Two different moods with one B&W and one color. If you did a third one with a silent wild bird looking in on a caged, singing, bird, and wondering why the caged bird sings, that might be an idea for a third version. I like stories told from different angles, and you did this well!

    Hi, Cathy!

Happy Saturday and N-Day, dear friend!

The difference is like day and night between the original sketch of “Nightingale Sings Her Song” and the finished product shown here today. First of all, I don’t know how you are finding the time to bring all of these drawings to life In Living Color. Second, imperfection is what makes art exciting. I see no reason to tamper with the illustration further, but that’s up to you. Your second rendering of the scene gives the nightingale reason to be curiously looking toward the open window of the house. Turns out there’s another birdie in there, tweeting away in its cage, and your nightingale can’t help responding with chirps of its own. I especially like how the nightingale is positioned in the color version, making it appear that she is curious and getting ready to fly up to the sill to have a closer look at the other bird. It’s a charming piece of artwork, Cathy!

Yessum, I well remember Maxine Nightingale and her signature song. She is shown in that video performing on the Dutch TV music show TopPop. The second song, “Love Hit Me,” is very derivative of her “Right Back Where We Started From” hit. “Gotta Be The One” uses more of those familiar riffs. “Possess You” breaks free from that soundalike pattern. It cooks and I enjoyed it. “You Got The Love” is a funky song that reminds me of Chaka Khan. I love it. Max does a nice job covering The Stylistics hit “You Are Everything.” I remember “If I Ever Lose This Heaven” by Quincy Jones and also had the song in my vinyl collection, a version recorded by The Average White Band. “Life Has Just Begun” is a fabulous track by Maxine. She reminds me of Sade. “One Last Ride” was released as the B side of “Gotta Be The One, a single that reached #53 in the summer of 1976. I love the funky horn-driven number. It sounds like jazz trumpeter Hugh Masekela was in on the recording session.

To sum it up, I’m glad British R&B/Soul singer Maxine Nightingale broke away from the sound of her original major hit instead of milking it forever. Some of her other recordings were excellent and it’s a shame she didn’t have more hits stateside.

Thank you for the morning art and entertainment, dear friend Cathy. Enjoy the rest of your weekend with DH. If you are planning a 4M Monday on Sunday post, you know I will be here!
