Battle of the Bands

My December #BOTB showdown

Welcome to My December, Kittens and Dawgs! This is my favorite time of the year. December is my birth month and is the month for my favorite holiday. Not worry, though. I won’t be doing a showdown featuring a Christmas tune. I admit I was tempted but I decided to do something different.

In this first battle of December, I’m using Linkin Park’s My December. Written by band member, Mike Shinoda, while on the road this song captures a guy’s heartache after a fight with his girlfriend and how he wants her back.

The thing I like about this somewhat new-to-me song is the music more than the lyrics.

The first contender is a very well-known artist with awesome smooth vocals with a very calming cover. Please listen to Josh Groban.

The second contender is a new-to-me discovery and their mewsic style covering My December is rather nice and soothing, which almost makes me think of Christmas. Please listen to Scala & Kolacny Brothers.

Ok, here’s the drill. Voting is open to everyone visiting. There is NO wrong vote, except if you DON’T vote. Who gets your vote, Josh Groban or Scala & Kolacny Brothers?  Please tell me in comments which artist you like best and why (optional)! 😉

The fun continues with more epic battles underway and I invite you to visit the official manager of BoTB, Stephen for the update list of players. I hope you’ll join me tomorrow for a few laughs with Friday Sillies and more Friday fun stuff. I’ll leave you with yet another cover (not included in the showdown) of an unknown artist who closely matches Linkin Park. What do you think?

Have a songtastic day!

Mike, I appreciate your vote. I got yours logged giving Josh 10 to 2 in this BoTB round. Thanks for stopping in. I wish I were in Blogosphere yesterday but DH & I were in the mountains enjoying the beautiful Christmas decorations and landscape.

    • Cathy Kennedy

Cherdo, thanks for popping late Tuesday night to vote. We were in the mountains all day yesterday, so blogging was out for me completely. I’m sorry I didn’t make it over to vote in your round but I did get yours logged in time. The tally is now 9 to 2 in Josh’s favor.

  • Birgit

Skald is wonderful in a misty, dreamy way but I have to give my vote to Josh Groban because of his deep, rich voice and it felt a little like Christmas to me. Great battle!

  • Robin

This song was new to me, Cathy. I really liked it. In fact, I loved the Josh Groban version of it. I don’t know if I would like it by Linkin Park or not (I guess I’ll give it a listen, but they can be rather hard on the ear). In any event, Josh Groban was just right. Loved it. Give him my vote please.

  • John Holton

I like the sound of the second one better. Maybe I’m just having a bad day and it doesn’t drive me into a deeper hole like the first one does… but maybe I just like the version by Scala & Kolacny Brothers. Ergo, they get my vote.

    • Cathy Kennedy

John, well I hope you weren’t having a bad day when you voted this round but I agree whatever factors are influencing your mood will also sway your emotional status mewsically. You’re the second person to go with Scala & Kolacny. The battle stands at 2 to 7 with Josh taking a sharp lead! Next stop, your place!

  • Jeffrey Scott

I think the second version is done well. I see what they are doing with it. But I don’t think I like it as much as the first. The first seems more powerful in a way. I can feel the emotion of the song. The sadness and disappointment.
Ironically enough, December 5th is my December as well.
This coming Monday, it will be 11 years since the Sheriff came into my office and gave me the divorce papers my wife filed for our 13 anniversary.

    • Cathy Kennedy

Jeffrey, WOW, your December is a sad one! I can’t even imagine the emotions you felt. I hope life is better now for you. Thanks for casting another vote for Josh making it 7 to 1. Have a good upcoming week. I’m busy in the kitchen making fresh baked biscuits, so I’ll hop over to your place in a few.

Marilyn, I appreciate your vote. Had WP not thrown your comment under ‘Spam’ then Josh would’ve gotten another tally but honestly it wouldn’t make any difference because he won by a landslide. lol

Hey Cathy. Both versions are nice. I definitely enjoyed Scala and Kolancy Brothers but I much preferred the Josh Groban version. His is rich and delicious!
    Very nice pairing.
    Enjoy your birthday month! 🙂

Michele, another one for Josh (6 to 1)! Glad you enjoyed both artists and thank you for the warm wishes for my upcoming birthday on the 14th. 😉 Let me scat on over to your place!

  • Debbie D.

This is a new song to my ears. Josh Groban has that wonderful, mellifluous voice that can’t be denied. Please give my vote to him. The second version didn’t grab me at all. Happy December, Cathy! 🙂

    • Cathy Kennedy

Debbie, Josh is edging his contender right off center stage with a 4 to 1 count in his advantage. It’s too early in this election and it could change. We’ve seen that happen before, haven’t we? Thanks for the vote and I’ll see you in a minute!

  • D-FensDogG

Hmmm… CATHY, this one’s not easy. I really could vote “Either One”. But go ahead and give it to Josh Groban. Not sure why. Maybe because it seemed a bit richer. Or maybe just because I heard it first. 😉

Stephen, Mission accomplished! I’m glad the task of picking wasn’t an easy one but you gave in pretty easy, though. I’m like that sometimes, too. You just can’t say why you like one version over the other. I gotcha down for Josh. The new count is 3 to 1 with Groban in the lead. I’ll see you in just a sec!

      • D-FensDogG

        Howdy, CATHY!
When I was here yesterday listening to the songs, I was simultaneously being distracted by something that was going on. As a result, I must honestly admit that the songs did not have my full attention like they should have.

So, I returned today to re-listen to each one. But I’m still gonna stick with my original vote. Josh has a really good voice.

    Hi, Cathy!

At the start of the millennium I was into Linkin Park’s brand of rap metal and I owned Hybrid Theory. The sad and subdued ballad “My December” was not on the original album, released later as a bonus track on a special edition. I am familiar with Josh Groban and admire his work, but his style doesn’t resonate. My ears perked up and my eyes grew wide as I listened to the Belgian women’s choir. Yes, yes, a thousand times yes – I really liked their performance, and it certainly qualifies as a sound of the season. Scala & Kolacny Brothers have been performing for 20 years and this is the first I ever heard of them. They get my vote and I thank you for the introduction, dear friend Cathy!

    • Cathy Kennedy

Tom, My December is sad but the music is so pretty. That’s what drew me to it this round. I’m a bit torn who’ll wind up with my vote as I like both and each creates a different sense for me. You’re the first to vote for Scala & Kolacny, which I recorded. Let’s see how things develop. I’m headed your way next!

    • Cathy Kennedy

Lee, when I put these two artists against each other I drew an early prediction of how I think it would go. Also, knew that both song covers might make things a bit tricky for the listener, which is what I want and I’m glad you found the choice hard to make. You cast the first vote today for Josh Groban. Thanks for weighing in this round, now to hop over to your place!
