      Marie,

Thanks for sharing a dance with me, girlfriend. In the coming days, things will get jumbled up, but you can find my ‘LATEST MEWS’ in my side menu to easily locate my 4M posts. Have a boogietastic week, Sweetie!

I tend to forget that Pickett did more than just “Dock Of The Bay.” A fine tribute to a great singer! Now, off to your theme reveal…

    • Cathy Kennedy

      John,

Did Pickett cover Otis Redding’s ‘Dock Of The Bay’? I don’t think I noticed that when I was looking up song choices. Oh well… a lot of these oldies covered each other’s songs. Thanks for the dance and have boogietastic week!

      • John Holton

Duh… it was early… Otis never did “Dock of the Bay,” I just managed to confuse two mid-to-late ’60’s soul singers. Hope you didn’t drive yourself nuts looking for it…

  • Cathy Keisha

Wilson Picket is one of our favorites from the ’60s. Thanks for sharing. We love him as well as Otis Redding and Percy Sledge. Atlantic Records had some great soul records.

    • Cathy Kennedy

      Mimi,

We had a lovely St. Patty’s Day. The weather was gorgeous but that wind was a bit chilly. I can’t wait for more steady sunny shine and warmer temperatures. Have a boogietastic week!

  • 15andmeowing

I have never heard of Wilson Picket, I guess because I never listen to R&B. 🙂 Happy St. Patrick’s Day!

    • Cathy Kennedy

      Ellen,

That’s interesting. Have you not heard ‘In the Midnight Hour’? That’s probably one of Pickett’s most recognizable hits. Thanks for boogieing with me.

  • Alana Mautone (@RamblinGarden)

It was so nice to spend a few minutes dancing to some good old fashioned funk. I was familiar with three of the five songs – while Midnight Hour would normally have been my fav, I just needed some dance moves this evening, and Land of 1000 Dances was just perfect. Oh yeah!

    • Cathy Kennedy

      Alana,

I can relate. Dance mewsic really helps to lift you out of any kind of funk and I’m glad I was able to do it for ya with some good ‘old fashion funk’ as you put it. Have a boogietastic week, my dear! 😉

  • Sandee

I’ve listen to him many times. Excellent.

Once again great minds have converged and landed on the same artist. Wilson Pickett was one of my favorites back in the stone age of rock ‘n roll. Since I once owned a ’68 Mustang, I picked “Mustang Sally” as my mewsical tribute to the March born artist. Have a blessed week.

  • Jacqui Murray

Yeah I kissed him–aww. And I see you’ve joined the AtoZ. Me too but in my own way which doesn’t well match their rules. I’ll expose myself April 1. See you then! (and before).

  • Thomas Anderson

    Hi, Cathy!

Happy 4M Monday on Sunday and Happy St. Patrick’s Day, dear friend! Are you wearin’ the green today?

I’m sure you can imagine how excited I was to discover a mewsical tribute to “The Wicked Pickett” in honor of his birthday. It’s a shame the R&B great passed away more than 13 years ago. What a treat it was to review some of the biggest songs on the soundtrack of my youth. Like many black artists coming up at the time, Pickett started out in a gospel group and switched to secular when he realized there was good money in making records for teenage listeners and dancers. Wilson sang lead with the Detroit group The Falcons on their hit “I Found a Love” and I have it in my collection. The first song in your set, “In The Midnight Hour,” is my favorite Wilson Pickett solo recording. I owned “634-5789 (Soulsville, U.S.A.) and “Land OF 1000 Dances” on various artists albums, the cheaply produced kind that were pressed on inferior wax and had most of the songs in shortened form in order to fit more on the album. It was very annoying to hear the songs fade out around the 1:00 mark, and it took several more years before I bought the 45s and was able to listen to them in their entirety. The original version of “Funky Broadway” by Dyke & the Blazers was a bigger hit at the Dell, but Pickett’s cover also made my Dell Top 200 list. The last song you posted, the 1971 single “Don’t Knock My Love,” is brand new to my ears. Can you believe it? Thanks for introducing it to me. I also want to mention a few other fine Wilson Pickett singles. “Soul Dance Number Three” was released just before “Funky Broadway” and sounds similar. “She’s Lookin’ Good” and “I’m a Midnight Mover” were released back-to-back in 1968, and the latter was another big Dell song.

Thanks for offering the cookin’ Detroit-Memphis style R&B sounds of Wilson Pickett to get my day started, and once again happy St. Patrick’s Day, dear friend Cathy. In the blogging world, you’re my four leaf clover! 🙂

    • Cathy Kennedy

      Tom,

I’m sure I noticed while doing my research that Pickett passed away more than a decade ago. He passed away five months before my baby brother did in 2006. While these legends are no longer with us, we can still enjoy their mewsical magic and they had plenty of it! No, I can’t believe that the last track I featured is new to you. WOW, I’m amazed. It was a new discovery for me as well. I’m delighted that you enjoyed my playset and appreciate you coming by to dance with me yesterday. Have a great week, my friend!

    Nice choice, Cathy!

I’ve got my post written and ready to go, but will hold off on posting it until 12am eastern time Monday. I just hope I remember to add my link to the linky before I head to bed. I’m spending my evening writing up my A2Z Theme Reveals and writing/scheduling posts like a madwoman.

Happy weekend/Monday/whatever the day it is.. Ha!

      Mary,

I understand about being a madwoman where the A2Z post writing goes. I am trying to get my sketches done in small batches before I pull the posts together. It’ll be close to getting this all done before April 1st. Thanks for boogieing with me. I’ve been listening to your playset while I made visits this morning pausing as needed to resume. 😉 Have a great week, my friend!
