Maine Vacation 2022

Maine Vacation 2022, Part 6

Last week, I brought y’all along with us to Fort Williams Park in Cape Elizabeth Maine and am continuing our time spent there.  This is why we came to begin with, Portland Head Light!

I realize my posts have been lengthy, so this time I’m consolidating by including a slide show with a brief description of what we did on this day and will round things out with a brief video I shot at Portland Head.

Visit Fort Williams Park!

We drove to Old Orchard Beach to see the historical pier, another place we’ve talked about for years wanting to see. This sea side community bustled with activity. The streets were jammed with people and parked cars. It was difficult to navigate through the traffic. We couldn’t find a parking place easily but honestly we were too tired and thirsty by this point that we drove on. We found a convenience store away from the hustle and got us a couple of “Slushie” type drinks. Naturally, DH was ready to get back into the donuts. We refueled ourselves with pure sugar octane while discussing our options. We were a bit frustrated that we didn’t see the old pier, but decided it was best to go to dinner and then grab some bottled water at the store before going to our room for the evening. Perhaps next time, we’re in southern Maine we can Old Orchard Beach again.

For dinner, we tried another of DH’s restaurant saves from years ago, The Lobster Claw Pound & Restaurant in Saco.

A family owned and operated business for 40+ years.

We enjoyed our dining experience at The Lobster Claw. The gal who took our order is married to the son or grandson of the folks who started the business. Get this our waitress told us a story of how she wound up in Knoxville, TN in 1982 for two weeks and how we are the first folks she’s met whose from there. What a small world! The meal was perfect and it was a great way to end the day.

We shared an order of fried clam strips, cole slaw, and waffle fries (not pictured)

That’s a wrap for day 2 of our Maine Vacation. Continue to watch for new posts each week, as I share with you our daily activities through pictures.  Who said picture stories are just for kids?

Thanks for making me a part of your day.   Up next on CAAC, the 4M dance party opens on Sunday for early party goers but my actual music post is set to publish on Monday. Come join the party!  Here you find this week’s theme! Have a wild and wonderful day! X💋X💋, Cathy

Wow! Amazing views. I would love a Maine vacation but my husband never wants to travel east cause he says it’s too crowded. Those clam strips look delicious!

You are making me want to go back to Southern Maine (last there in September 2011; was it really that long ago?). I enjoyed your video and slide show and then dug into the Ft Williams park website. Very interesting! Alana ramblinwitham

      Alana,

You really need to go back. You had quite the advantage over us living so much closer and your familiarity with New York, especially NYC. Trying to get through traffic in the city that never sleeps at 2am in the morning was nerve wrecking. I hate to see what rush hour traffic is like there and you can bet your last dollar that we’ll do everything we can to keep THAT from being a future problem!

      Ellen,

The Old Orchard area was very busy. It made me think of Gatlinburg and Pigeon Forge in the foothills of the Smoky’s. Perhaps next time we go to Maine, we can spend more time in southern Maine. We really enjoyed the time we did have there a lot.

      Kathe,

Some lighthouses you can spend the night in but I’ve never looked into that. I’m sure it’s way too expensive but it’s a cool idea. I love visiting lighthouses! We went in Portland Head to ask a about going up in tower since we there were people up there but it turned out that that day was the only day they allow it with tickets to purchase a year in advance. Too bad we missed out on that because that would’ve been super neat to do. 🙂

Such a beautiful place, Cathy, and your photos captured it all so well! 😍 What a thrill it must have been, standing in the very spot where Henry Wadsworth Longfellow sat.

      Debbie,

I remember reading that sign years ago thinking how awesome it was to be in the spot where Longfellow visited and that feeling was with me this time, too. It’s just amazing! 🙂

  • Sandee

What a beautiful place. I would have loved to explore there. The food looked amazing. You know how I love food. What a wonderful adventure you and DH shared together.

Thank you for joining the Wordless Wednesday Blog Hop.

Have a fabulous Wordless Wednesday, Cathy. Love and hugs. ♥

    Hi, Cathy!

Happy Wild, Wacky and Almost Wordless Wednesday, dear friend!

Thanks for taking me along on the next leg of your Maine/New England adventure. I thoroughly enjoyed the slide show of pics taken at your #1 destination, Portland Head Light. It’s interesting that the spot was often visited by Longfellow and became the inspiration for his poem “The Lighthouse.” I wish I could write such beautiful lines. The Lighthouse, rocks and sea make a breathtaking composition, and I can imagine that spot inspiring many other works of poetry, literature and art. I suppose it is mostly an optical illusion, but the Lighthouse looks like The Leaning Tower of Pisa in some of those shots. In my head, I can hear those waves crashing on the rocks. Given that vigorous wave action, I wouldn’t want to fall into the water from one of those rocky vantage points. I see that your camera also captured an image of Rams Island Ledge Light Station off in the distance. It was also interesting to read the historical significance of Battery Hobart.

Count me in for a meal at the family o&o restaurant The Lobster Claw. Yessum, it’s quite a coincidence that your waitress once lived in K-ville and that you are the first folks from that city she has served while working at that eatery up in Maine. “It’s a small world after all.”

Thanks for including a video so that I can actually hear those waves at Portland Head Light. What a wonderfully scenic location!

Three reminders: I started a new post today at Shady’s Place for a 5-day run. Also, please note that another hurricane is approaching Florida and is expected to move across our area tomorrow morning. Even though the system will likely be downgraded to tropical storm status by the time it reaches us, winds will be in the 50 to 60 mph range and there is a good chance I will lose power and internet again for an undetermined period of time. I tell you this in case you contact me by email or leave a comment on my blog and find me unresponsive. Third, I have that medical procedure first thing Monday morning, and therefore I will be very late getting here for your next 4M music fest.

Thank you very much for posting another entertaining and educational tour of points of interest in Maine, dear friend Cathy. Have a wonderful Wednesday!

      Tom,

Portland Head looks like its leaning because I’m too close to it to get the composition right. It kind of gives it an artsy feel, though. Beautiful spots like this one can easily understand how famous words are penned or gorgeous seascapes are captured on canvas. I admire both art forms. You would like The Lobster Claw. I usually check TWC for our forecast a few times each day and usually notice the weather headlines. My eyes caught the name of the newest system posing a threat which happens to have share the name of our New England daughter. 🙂 I hope your power isn’t interrupted at all or for not very long anyhow. Yes, I remember you have an appointment Monday morning, so please no worries there, my friend. I hope that goes well for you. I’m heading your way in a few to check out your newest post on SPMM. Thanks for dropping by today!
