Maine Vacation 2022

Maine Vacation 2022, Part 2

The best way for me to tell you about our Maine vacation is to do so chronologically.  This also serves to remind me in the future when my memory isn’t so good. The week before last, I shared Nubble Light with you.  I’ll pick up with our first breakfast in Maine. I was a little hungry but what I needed the most was coffee.  We were now awake for more than 24 hours.  My legs didn’t feel stable.  The ground felt wobbly beneath my feet and we both were prong to stumbling easier.   I guess this is the result of exhaustion.  We made plans to go to The Goldenrod, which is close to Sohier Park where we viewed Nubble.

In 2004, we visited The Goldenrod. They are famous for salt water taffy that they call Kisses. That was the main reason we went the first time. We bought some then and we did again this time but something we didn’t do 18 years ago was try the home-made ice cream and restaurant. Other than the Kisses, we had these two things luring us back. The Goldenrod’s post Labor Day business hours for opening on Friday was 11am. I knew this prior to our arrival. While we waited, we walked along the streets, window shopped, and browsed some stores. After the long drive, we welcomed the leg stretch. We were one of the first people to walk through The Goldenrod’s door. We were seated and soon had two cups of black coffee sitting in front of us.

The view outside the window where we sat.

DH ordered for me, the ham and cheese omelette with toast, and home fries and for himself blueberry pancakes with real Maine maple syrup, and a side of sausage. We shared an orange juice. We began eating before I remembered that I wanted to take a picture. This turned out to be a reoccurring thing with me – nibble and snap. I don’t think I make a good foodie photographer but even though the picture isn’t perfect, the food was deeelicious!

The view to my left.
Standing at the entrance of the dining area waiting to pay. Do you see where the waitress is standing on the right side? We were seated to just beyond the double glass-less windows, if that makes sense.
Salt water taffy being pulled to become Goldenrod Kisses

We tried The Goldenrod’s ice cream. DH got strawberry and I had the chocolate. The only complaints are the strawberry pieces were a bit too big. It’s difficult to get frozen berries chewed thoroughly and believe it or not the chocolate ice cream was too dark. The quality was good and generally both had a nice flavor. Strawberry turned out to be my favorite between the two.

The Goldenrod Kisses getting cut and wrapped.

Cape Neddick had great public parking near the water. I love how technology makes paying easy breezy by card, cash, or mobile app. Before hopping back into the car, I wanted to take a few pictures of the beach. There were people sunning and playing in the water. The temperatures were in the low 70s. Under normal circumstances it would be too warm for a sunny day but the wind was a bit cool making it quite enjoyable.

Short Sands Beach

The Atlantic surf rode onto shore in pretty rolling waves and the sound…what can I say? Absolutely nothing! All I could do was smile.
I’m not a sunbather but this looks so relaxing!

It was still too early to call our motel to see if our room was ready, so we decided to cross off another of our things we want to see list but I think I’ll wait until next time. The photo fun and memories will continue next week in part III.  I hope you’ll come back to breathe in that salty, pine essence with another batch of pix.  😉

Thanks for making me a part of your day.  Originally, I thought I’d bring to you a post every other week and then I realized that would take too long to get through my Maine vacation photo gallery. Unless something causes me to divert from my plans, starting now watch for weekly updates in this series of our daily activities through pictures.  Who said picture stories are just for kids?  Up next on CAAC, the 4M dance party opens on Sunday for early party goers. I moved my actual music post back to Mondays. Come boogie with me to this week’s theme picks! Have a wild and wonderful day! X💋X💋, Cathy

We have watched that taffy pulling many times but I have never eaten inside! I rarely think to take photos of my food before taking a bite or two as well and don’t think I’d make a very good food blogger for that very reason.

      Joanne,

The taffy pulling machine is neat. There’s a shop in the foothills of the Smoky’s that has one that I always like watching in action. I think the fascination with these is it brings out my inner child. I mean, who doesn’t like taffy? Do eat at The Goldenrod the next time y’all are in York. We really liked it. I totally understand where you’re coming from regarding food photography. It’s the last thing on my mind. 🙂

That was a very good insight of your vacation, CK. We also loved the pictures and hopped over to Maine in google and wow! what a great place to hang out for a vacation…and not only for the breakfast😹Thanks fr sharing it with us! Double Pawkisses from us to you🐾😽💞

Maine is a beautiful state to vacation. We didn’t have enough time to visit every place we wanted. I told DH that we need to get lodging at one of those extended stay hotels/motels where we can stay for three or four months to try to take in the place we can’t ever seem to get to when we’re there. I’m glad you enjoyed my photo memories. 🙂

      Ellen,

Breakfast was fantastic! I think of all of our meals in Maine that’s what I miss most! I’m about ready to make pancakes for us. I think I have frozen blueberries and I definitely have maple syrup. Hmmm, maybe I need to make a batch this weekend. 😀

Lovely photos Cathy, and the food looks delicious! 🙂 Capturing life’s wonderful memories is excellent use of blog space! Besides the entertainment value, we can relive those moments any time.

      Debbie,

I agree. I’m thinking about converting my vacation posts into a pdf once I’m done so that I will have a record. I may not always have a blog. I’m having fun going through my photos for this series. It’s a fabulous way to relive the experience all over.

Those pancakes looked so good! I can see the large portions. Hopefully your motel has a fridge so you can save your future leftovers for another time (I’m not shy about doing that as I hate to see food go to waste, also.) Your picture of the beach wants me to climb through the computer screen and take a seat. I haven’t seen a taffy pulling machine in many years, either. Alana ramblinwitham

      Alana,

Our room had a refrigerator but it’s wasn’t convenient to do, especially on this morning since it was hours before we check in. I don’t think we had much on our plates when we got up, though. The day was so beautiful with sunny blue skies and the scenery brought the WOW factor to it. I like watching taffy being pulled. It brings the inner kid out. 🙂

A state I would love to explore. So beautiful. That breakfast looks huge. That would be three days worth the breakfast for me.

Have a fabulous day and rest of the week, Cathy. Love and hugs. ♥

      Sandee,

The breakfast was more than plenty for us. Normally, we share an entree but since this was new to us we each got something. There was food left on the table. I hate doing that and it used to make me feel guilty but not anymore. I’d rather leave it, instead of feeling too full and then have to work twice as hard to get it off. 🙂

    Hi, Cathy!

Happy Wild, Wacky and Almost Wordless Wednesday, dear friend! I hope your week is going well.

I enjoyed going with you and DH on the second leg of your Maine/NH getaway. I don’t know how you endured staying awake more than 24 hours. With those wobbly legs, I’m thankful that you didn’t take a tumble, especially on the rocks. Thanks for showing us what it’s like outside and inside The Goldenrod where you returned to dine for the first time in 18 years. I’d love to taste their salt-water taffy Kisses and home-made ice cream. My mouth is watering after gazing at that taffy being pulled in the window. That picture reminds me of the salt-water taffy shops I visited on the boardwalks of Maryland and New Jersey beach towns throughout my boyhood, teens and 20s. I was always mesmerized watching the machine in the window pulling gobs of yummy taffy. Those Goldenrod Kisses remind me of Hershey Kisses, the bite-size foil-wrapped chocolate treats that folks in our region always referred to as “Hershey Buds.”

The pictures you took at Cape Neddick Short Sands Beach are wonderful postcards that will forever remind you of this dream vacation. I can almost feel the cool invigorating breeze, the sunshine beaming down from a pure blue sky and the delightful temp in the low 70s, an experience that is still weeks away for those of us here in Florida. I always loved the sound of the tumbling tide. It’s nature’s mewsic, and it’s free for everyone to enjoy.

Yessum, I look forward to the next weekly installment of this series. I love to see where you went, what you saw and what you did while up there in New England. Enjoy the rest of your week, dear friend Cathy!

      Tom,

Taffy pulls are in a few candy shops in some of the foothill towns of the Smoky’s. I always find it interesting to watch that thing in action but what I like even more is buying the sticky sweet candy, a favorite for as far back as my childhood. Some things never change. The Goldenrod Kisses aren’t cylinder shaped but each Kiss is about the size of a quarter and roughly a half inch thick. You don’t want to try to chew these if the temperature is kind of cool. I learned that the morning we stopped there. It’s not a problem now with being warmer here. The taffy is much easier to chew. 🙂 I loved being right there at Short Sands Beach on this morning! Everything about those moments felt perfect. Thanks for returning for more adventures from our first morning in Maine. I sure hope we can go back next year! Have a good day, my friend.
