Maine Vacation 2022

Maine Vacation 2022, Part 19

Unlike the previous day, the weather on this day, September 22 was very rainy and gray.  This would be our last full day on Mt Dessert Island but we won’t think about that now.  Our morning started off as usual breakfast at Jordan’s in Bar Harbor.  Afterwards, we got gas in Hull’s Cove at that cute gas station I shared with you weeks ago.  There was a little park that I wanted to check out heading toward Trenton.  It’s actually a little island that connects Mt Dessert Island and Trenton, called Thompson Island.  Either I forgot or just didn’t know.  The body of water is Mt Dessert Narrows.  It’s so cool how there are so many little island off the main land that you can drive to. There has been times in the past where the ocean has slammed down in front of us and while it’s thrilling, it’s unnerving.  I guess it would be different if I lived there.  Anyway, here’s a picture that I snapped.  The park is situated on right coming out of Mt. Dessert Island. It’s pretty little spot.

We hadn’t yet made it to the Seawall, so we headed to Southwest Harbor. In route, we noticed a sign for a  picnic area that we thought might have a pretty view.

The next series of photos, I captured at the Seawall Picnic Area off 102-A.

Google Maps satellite view

Revisiting was a thrill but I couldn’t quite recall where we were exactly.  The landscape has changed or my memory or maybe a little of both.  There’s two sections to enjoy the wave action. I labeled the arial screen grab as 1 and 2. In section 1, the first picture in the following set I shot through the car windshield.  It was raining quite a bit and very windy.  The gravelly viewing area was slopped a bit steep making it difficult to lean forward to get a good picture and the rain didn’t help any either. This isn’t the way I remember it. The other section is where I took the rest of the photos.

To feel what it was like at the Seawall, I shot this short video.

Passing through Southwest Harbor, we came up on this view. Luckily, there was enough pull off space where we could take a few pictures outside the car now that the rain had stopped.

I was so busy snapping pictures that I didn’t notice the sea bird. Can anyone tell me what it is?

One of my pictures I got wasn’t the best but I saw the potential for using Pixelmator photo-editor on it. Are you curious to see what I created?

Each new image has a different feel  I’m not sure which I like the best. Do you have a favorite?

On our way back to Bar Harbor, we saw a sign for Pretty Marsh. We ventured to see what this driving along a narrow road. The heavy clouds overhead and drizzle cut down our visibility. It made me nervous, but we pressed on. This is what we found at the end of the road we were on. I think this would be a great place to get some amazing pictures if only Mr. Blue Sky was with us.

I, especially like this picture but absolutely got drenched trying to get it when I rolled the window down, remember it was not only rainy but very windy. My side of the car was very wet. Thank heavens for good car heaters!

Once back in town, we had our last meal in Bar Harbor at Stewman’s. We shared the fish and chips. It was good. Our waiter on the other hand seemed distracted and didn’t give us the attention we had hoped. We would’ve gotten dessert but a bit bothered and too cold to wait for service. We all have bad days, so I don’t want to be too hard on the fella.

That concludes another day in Maine and our last night in Bar Harbor.  I appreciate your visit and your time to journey with me as I enjoy our vacation all over again. Watch my Monday’s Music Moves Me post each week for announcements when to expect the next installment in this series.  Speaking of which, if you have music to share you’re invited to link up hit the dance floor with the 4M crew.  You’ll find me boogieing to the weekly theme inspired song picks but remember themes aren’t required to gain access to this party! Sometimes the best photos are ones in bad weather. These you took are no exception. I think that bird is a crane or a heron. I might be a B but I would not have given that guy a tip at all. I’ve had bad days but I still do my best to be there for my clients and, if I come across as negative, I know I need to be home or I apologize. It’s not easy being a waiter/waitress and I know I couldn’t do it, physically or emotionally but, if you do this, then be there for your customers.

      Birgit,

I get what you’re saying and I totally agree. Unfortunately a lot of people today don’t have the same work ethnic as you or me. When dealing with the public you have to put on your game face and set aside personal matters but we don’t see that too much anymore. You’re right about it not being an easy job serving people and it’s certainly not a job you’d catch me doing. I don’t have the coordination or balance needed. A heron was my first thought. Tom mentioned that it was a heron, so I guess that’s what it is. Thanks for tagging along for another day in Maine!

I’ve only been in Southern Maine and it’s a shame it was rainy and windy. If the sun had been out…oh well, we work with what we are given when on vacation, don’t we? Your memory could have been good, by the way-it could have been the differences in tide, or erosion, or who knows? Maybe one day I’ll make my way to Bar Harbor and I can use your posts as a guide. Alana,

Oh sure, the tide and erosion can change the shoreline but they definitely built it up some and maybe because of natural changes occurring. Yep, we work with what we’re given while on vacation but it seems to phase me less than when were out for a day trip in our area. I hope you do get to Bar Harbor but honestly anywhere along the Maine coast is a special treat!

      Marie,

We truly enjoyed every second of this trip. The weather in general was cooperative and on this rainy day of our entire trip did finally let up by dinner time, so it wasn’t a complete wash out. I hope we can go back next year. That would be super!

Thanks for joining me for another day in Maine, Ellen. This series is almost done. Sniff-Sniff. I had the best time of my life on vacation and am so looking forward to next time!

      Brian,

The wind and rain on this day really added mystery to our adventure. The pine trees were so thick venturing down some of the tiny windy roads and with the elements, I kept imagining a Stephen King novel springing alive before my eyes. It was just a little scary at times. 🙂 Yeah, I’m a big scaredy Cathy!

I have always wanted to visit Maine. I have a friend at social media I live through her as she lives in Maine and I love following the antics of her three sons. Beautiful photos. Have agreat week.

So beautiful even if it’s rainy and gray. All I need is an umbrella and I’m good. So beautiful. A vacation I dream of.

Thank you for joining the Wordless Wednesday Blog Hop.

Have a fabulous Wordless Wednesday. Love and hugs, my friend. ♥

      Sandee,

There’s beauty in all kinds of weather. I don’t like rainy, gray weather but when you’re enjoying a place such as this then it turns a seemingly drabby day into a beautiful one. That’s the way we feel when we’re on the Blue Ridge Parkway or in the Smoky’s under the same circumstances. 🙂

  • Thomas Anderson

    Hi, Cathy!

Happy Wild, Wacky and Almost Wordless Wednesday, dear friend! I have popped out of your trunk and am happily joining you on the next leg of your incredible journey exploring Maine and New Hampshire.

It might require the Jaws of Life to pry me away from Mt Dessert Island once I find a seat and taste the goodies they offer. I’d probably miss the entire day of sightseeing! 🙂 As I have suggested in comments on earlier chapters, a gray and rainy day has its own charm and can be regarded as a refreshing change and an opportunity to experience familiar sights in a different way.

Yessum, one thing I have learned via this series is that Maine’s coastline is dotted with numerous islands – so much to see, so many places to explore and scenic wonders to capture with your camera. You did a tremendous job! i don’t blame you for shooting pics through the car windshield much of the time. The rocks that covered the shoreline were soaked with rain and sea mist, making it treacherous to walk on them, especially with the wind whipping. You didn’t want to take a tumble and get hurt, spoiling an otherwise dream vacation. I would guess that the wading bird you spotted was a heron. That picture is an example of the delightful surprises your camera records on a dismal day.

Yessum, your Brushstrokes art tool added magic and mystery to that scene. With summerlike weather coming on strong now in Florida, I wish I were up there in Maine that particular day wrapped in a jacket and breathing that the damp, cool, invigorating air. It was a challenge for you and DH to navigate through the heavy weather to Pretty Marsh, but the pictures you took show that you were rewarded with special moments out there.

I’m sorry your dining experience at Stewman’s did not measure up to other meals you had in this trip. You are correct. People have their reasons for being distracted and inattentive and we all have our bad days. We need to keep that in mind. Mrs. Shady disagrees with me, but I actually believe in giving a waiter a bigger tip if the service was subpar, and for the very reason I just stated. Maybe a random act of kindness is just what they need to turn their day around or even to turn their whole life around. You never know how great the ripple effect of such an unexpected gesture will be.

Enjoy the rest of your week, dear friend Cathy!

      Tom,

Thanks for joining me for another memory filled day from our Maine vacation. The islands near the coast are connected by small land stretches that blends so well that you don’t think about not being on the mainland. It’s really quite cool! We’ve noticed the temperature along the coast from Wells in southern Maine is often similar to ours and Bar Harbor which is much further north starts off similar to us but the highs 20º cooler as it is forecast today. That would be wonderful! I feel for you. I don’t like sweltering weather.

DH tends to side on the conservative side when leaving a tip. He’s an old softy and he’s really quite right because the one person who deals with a wait/waitress having a rough day can’t know what’s going on and it’s best to have a tender heart in these circumstances. Hopefully, it’ll be just what’s needed to turn that individuals mood around.

This series’ final chapter happens in two weeks. I hate to see it ending but I sure do appreciate you being apart of the fun!
