Monday's Music Moves Me

Lionel Richie One-Word Song Titles

Good morning, Kittens and Dawgs! It’s a new work week but we’re not going to let a little thing like it being Monday get us down.  Are you ready to groove?  Today I’m breaking away from the theme and XmasDolly is liable to put me in the corner but I’m rebel and a rule breaker on occasion.  Actually, I’m not breaking away from the theme like I thought.  My brain is just slightly scrambled is all.  🙂  Anyhow, my mewsic theme inspiration came while listening to the radio. Yes, I do listen to it but only in the car. Anyhow, I can’t remember what song was playing but I noticed the title was only one-word and so the seed for the ‘one-word song titles’ series was born. In this edition I’m featuring the very accomplished singer/songwriter Lionel Richie. Former Commodores member and now one of the new judges on the reboot season of America Idol.

Get to your feet to boogie with these well-known one-word song titles by Lionel Richie!

Playlist song tracks:

  1. Hello
  2. Lady
  3. Truly
  4. Easy
  5. Still
  6. Why

What’s the first one-word song title that comes to mind? Are you a Lionel Richie fan? What do you think of the new American Idol? Who’s your favorite singer?

This week’s theme is “your choice“.  Please join my fellow co-hosts: XmasDolly (Party Coordinator), StacyAlana and Colette who’s taking a semi-blog hiatus due to eye issues. Please continue to keep her in your prayers.  Now, step out on the dance floor, link ONLY your mewsic post (direct URL) below.

Before I boogie over to see you let me give a little nod to DH for our 39th wedding anniversary we celebrated this past Saturday.  I couldn’t have picked a better soul mate than you and I’m the luckiest girl in the who world that God brought you into my life! 😘  Now….here’s one of the songs from our wedding.

Keep those tunes playing and your body swaying, I’ll see ya around the cyber block!

X💋X 💋, Cathy

    Hey Cathy,
First up: HAPPY ANNIVERSARY! And Congrats: 39 years is huge! I can’t even begin to imagine spending that much time with one person… Although I have great role models: my parents were married for 61 years at the time of my Dad’s death. Now that’s a long time! So happy to hear that you truly did have a Happy anniversary. I know plenty of folks who are married for many years but not truly happy. Good to know that you and your DH actually are. Well done!
And you can’t go wrong with a little Bread in the mix… 🙂

I gotta say, if you were to ask me BEFORE i listened to your playlist if I was a Lionel Richie fan, my response would’ve been “Not particularly.” But wow, when I listened to your list of songs, I kept saying to myself “Oh I LOVE this song!” and “Wow, I didn’t realize how much I like Lionel Richie!” That’s the cool thing about this blog hop: always lots of discover about oneself! 🙂
Excellent playlist. I had actually forgotten that he started out with the Commodores before he went solo.

And I like your idea for a theme of One-Word song titles. Since your Lionel Richie songs were of the mellow variety, I was thinking mellow too and two songs that came to mind were both by Genesis, both off the same album too: “Squonk” and “Ripples” off the Trick of the Tail album. That was an album that got a lot of play between me and my friends in 1976.

Is this going to be one of your upcoming themes? It’s a good one, if it is. If it isn’t, I might steal it — I’m trying to come up with one more theme for my October Conductor shift… 🙂

    talk soon,
    Have a good week,

    Michele at Angels Bark

    • Cathy Kennedy

      Michele,

My in-laws were married 66 years before my MIL passed (2014). When she died, my FIL was so broken-hearted. It was really pitiful. He always said, “I lost the love of my life!” At least now, they are together again. Married couples who aren’t happy I believe is the result of forgetting to keep the relationship alive. We still act like we’re newlyweds and every time someone asks how long we’ve been married it bowls them over.

Yeah, I had forgotten how many great songs there were by Lionel Richie or the Commodores, so I had a lot of fun putting this playlist together. You had asked if I was going to use this as an upcoming theme, I might but if you want to use it in October then go for it! It won’t bother me in the least. Thanks for the song recommendations. I don’t remember either of these Genesis’ songs. Have a tunetastic week, dearie!

FOR REAL? 39 YEARS? WOW GIRL… HAPPY, HAPPY ANNIVERSARY & TO HAVE TRUE LOVE LAST THIS LONG & YET EVEN LONGER…. I hope we can make it until then too. December 23rd is ours & we’ll be married 19 yrs. Praise God! Anyway, I really like Lionel Richie & love his song HELLO! I even liked the Commodores he use to sing with too! American Idol? Yes, I watched it, and I think they were all good judges except Katy Perry I didn’t realize she was more of a comic than a singer. Hmmm Luke, he’s one handsome guy, but he’s a whole lot of fun too. As far as this years contestants… hmmmm I didn’t thing the girl who won should’ve gotten it. I liked the guy with the long hair or the girl that sang that Journey song and then Steve Perry showing up was awesome! I feel so bad for him. He really wants to go back to the band, but I don’t know about his vocals if they can still do what he use too! It’s really sad! Actually Steve Perry has been my favorite singer for years. One work tune off the top of my head believe it or not was my Mom & Dad’s song… “Misty” by Johnny Mathis!

    • Cathy Kennedy

      Marie,

Yep, 39 years for real! DH & I dated for two and a half before getting married. We were so young. I (17.5yrs old) was still in high school (senior year) and DH (a month from his 20th bday) just graduated college. The odds were stacked against us but we entered our marriage with the mindset that divorce was never an option and that we’d just work through the difficult times. Thankfully, we kept God at the center of our lives, never had any real marital issues, looked for ways to grow together, and we’re each other’s best friend.

I liked all the judges on AI. Lionel Richie seems down to earth. Katy reminds me a bit of Lucille Ball with some of her craziness and Luke is just a good ole boy. I thought it was funny how Lionel referred to them as children. I thought for sure Gabby Bennett (the girl who met Steve Perry) would win. She has a fabulous stage presence. She’s a real performer. Her voice is good but I felt like there wasn’t anything really special. If someone picks her up from the show and manages her just right, I think she’ll go along way in the business. Cade (the long-haired dude) really played the guitar well but at times I didn’t like his voice because of too much vibrato. Maddie, the winner, was the more unique voice. I can’t see buying an album by her but I do think there’s a greater chance I might be just the right single. I really didn’t have a clue that she and Caleb (the country singer) were a couple. That came as surprise but a nice one. I thought vocally they are as opposite as any two people can be. 🙂

    • Cathy Kennedy

      Patrick,

The 2018 AI winner is Maddie Poppe. Of the three finalists, we wanted her to win. Her voice is most unique and there’s a great chance that she’ll do something that we may actually want to buy someday.

  • Birgit

That comedic touch at the beginning is brilliant and reminds me of Abbott and Costello….I had to read it a couple of times. I love the song All Night Long. Happy 39th anniversary! So many don’t make it past 10 or, if they do, many are not happy. My best friend is going through a horrible divorce and I can safely say he is a real jerk…always was. Anyhoo, I can tell, just from your writings how happy both of you are together and the respect and love you have so have a great year ahead and next year..the big 40:)

    • Cathy Kennedy

      Birgit,

I didn’t realize until after I saw your comment that the meme had some inappropriate wording (very faint to see for someone needing reading correction), so I pulled it and did photo-shop on it and then uploaded again. But, the meme is really funny and I’ve seen it several times before sharing it. I’m glad you enjoyed it. “All Night Long” is a good Lionel Richie song. He seems like a really nice person. That’s the one thing I like about American Idol or The Voice, you sorta get to see the celebrities personalities shine. That’s just sad about your friends going through an ugly divorce. Unfortunately, there are times when one partner isn’t what he/she should be in the relationship. You just gotta wonder, why the other person didn’t see or want to see this truth. Rarely does the bad behavior ever change. I often told our kids to watch for signs of undesirable traits in boy/girlfriend and to not be blinded sighted thinking you can fix it because that’s probably not going to happen. It makes me happy that others can tell from the things I share that DH and I are a purrrfect suit. We consider ourselves blessed to have the other. I’m looking forward to the next 40 years. I hope they don’t pass by as quickly, though.

  • John Holton

Lessee… first one-word song I came up with was “Corcovado,” an Antonio Carlos Jobim bossa nova tune, followed by another, “Desafinado.” And while I’m thinking about it, “Dindi,” pronounced “jin-jee.” He was another one with the 1-word titles. Can’t say I’m much of a Lionel Richie fan, but I don’t mind him. Do you remember that picture of a telephone pole with a picture of Lionel Richie on it, and it says “Hello, is it me you’re looking for”? I got a laugh out of that.

We don’t watch “American Idol,” so I can’t answer that one. As for my favorite singers, you’ve given me an idea for my yet-to-be-written MMMM post….

    • Cathy Kennedy

      John,

Thanks for the one-word song title suggestions. I have not heard of any of these but I’m sure you’re not surprised by that, though. 🙂 Thanks for the anniversary wishes. I Googled for Lionel Richie “Hello” telephone pole and got a few hits. Yes, I do remember that and thinking when I saw it the first time how cleverly funny it was. Well…I’m glad I inspired you for an upcoming 4M post with your favorite singers. I’m sure you’ll put together a great playlist, too.

  • Mary B

    Cathy,

I’m a huge Lionel Richie fan. His music holds a very special place in my heart. His ‘Can’t Slow Down’ album was the soundrack to a summer of love back in the 80s. So many memories tied to that album.

Speaking of love – Happy Anniversary!

    ~Mary

    • Cathy Kennedy

      Ellen,

Yes, the last 39 years have gone by like a snap of the fingers! I was telling DH, one minute we were kids and now look at us? It goes by faster than you ever imagine possible.

  • Comedy Plus

I always enjoy your music. We are alike where music is concerned.

The kitty is adorable. That’s exactly what it’s saying to.

Have a purrfect Awww Monday, Cathy. Big hug. ♥

    • Cathy Kennedy

      Sandee,

Thanks for stopping by for a little boogie time. I’m delighted to finally contribute to your weekly Awww Mondays series. Have a tunetastic week, my friend!

  • allstarme

I feel like one word song titles have to be really good to matter, otherwise, they seem lazy. But that’s just me. I also sort of dislike really long song titles. LOL.

    • Cathy Kennedy

      Claire,

So, you’re an in the middle kid of gal with song titles. 🙂 I don’t care so much about the title as I do with how it moves me. 🙂 Thanks for dancing with me!

  • -Eugenia

Happy Anniversary! Happy Monday! I’m not much of a Lionel Richie fan. I like songs that have more of a beat and are fun to dance to. I like the new American Idol, thus far but haven’t been able to watch much of it.

    • Cathy Kennedy

      Eugenia,

I prefer songs that make me move but sometimes I like it when things slow down. You can catch up on missed episodes of AI online or if you have a streaming device i.e. Apple TV, Roku, … then you can use ABC app to watch televised programs. That’s what we do. We rarely view anything that’s live. 🙂

  • Alana Mautone (@RamblinGarden)

Happy anniversary. I just celebrated mine at the top of the month – we are two of the lucky ones who have had marriages last. (And two people, apparently, who loved Bread.) Anyway, here’s mine – Africa, by Toto, another fav group.

    • Cathy Kennedy

      Alana,

Didn’t you share your anniversary with us in Blogosphere? I’m purrrty sure I remember reading your post or am I confusing it with another? I’m horrible with keeping details straight. Anyhow, you and I are really lucky to have found good men who we not only love but stuck it out through the years. Relationships can do two things, grow together or apart. I’m happy that we grew together. It sure makes life a whole better. 🙂 “Africia” is a good 80s song!

  • Thomas Anderson

    Hi, Cathy!

Happy 39th wedding anniversary to you and DH! You are lucky to have found your soul mate and a relationship that has stood the test of time. That Bread song works splendidly as a wedding song.

It’s not exactly easy to “boogie” to these Lionel Richie songs simply because they are mostly drop-dead slow ballads. 🙂 However, I enjoy them. These videos played heavily during the morning and afternoon dayparts at our MTV style station.

The first one word song that comes to my mind is the quintessential one word song “One” by Three Dog Night. I believe history has shown that a record has a much better chance of catching on and becoming a major hit if the title contains one, two or at most three words, thereby making it easier to remember. There are a few exceptions, songs with long, cumbersome titles that still became hits, but not nearly as many.

Have a wonderful week, dear friend Cathy!

    • Cathy Kennedy

      Tom,

Thanks for the congrats, my friend! Our good friend…actually, he was more DH’s friend since they not only went to school together but used to play mewsic together, sang at our wedding. He sang two Bread songs, Sweet Surrender and If for us. His vocals were a purrrfect match up to David Soul’s voice.

My Lionel Richie playlist is more of a slow-dance or easy-listening collection of songs which I enjoy playing sometimes. It puts me in a reflective mood. When I originally began my theme, I thought about picking a variety of songs but when I came up with so many one-word song titles by Lionel then I decided to keep with a single artist as well. I did think of Three Dog Night’s “One”. In fact, it was the first song to come to mind. I would imagine longer song title are more memorable. It’s certainly difficult to come up with them on my own. Boy, am I thankful for Google! 🙂
