Battle of the Bands,  Monday's Music Moves Me

Kingston Calypso #BoTB showdown & #4M tunes spinning on the turntable

Awww Mondays hosted by Sandee from Comedy Plus.

Hey folks,  I missed all of you over my two week blogging hiatus and I’m now back in action…sorta.  DH and I enjoyed our together time like always. The R&R break is just what we needed. This week’s Monday’s Mewsic Moves Me theme is your choice song picks which is purrfect as I’m eager to tie two mewsic memes into one songsational post.

I can’t remember when it was but sometime this year I got the brilliant idea after listening to Shirley Bassey on SiriusXM covering an opening James Bond theme song. Honestly, I thought she was the original artist but I was proven wrong after I did a quick search. Anyhow it caused my brains’ gears to click and clatter. A big question mark popped inside my head, “Why not do James Bond theme songs for BoTBs?”

Do I have you pumped?  Alright…according to Wikipedia Dr. No is the sixth novel by the English author Ian Fleming to feature his British Secret Service agent James Bond.Fleming wrote the novel in early 1957 at his Goldeneye estate in Jamaica. It was this Fleming title that became the first movie in the long history of James Bond films.

In the opening of the movie the song Kingston Calypso plays written and recorded by Monty Norman  with Bryon Lee and The Dragonaires  as three blind men walk along the screen, one leading the other to an unknown destination. What makes the scene memorable is that the three blind men are really hit men.

The first contender is Diana Coupland.

The second contender is a no name trio comprising of Jac Jones on the flute, Amy Baldwin on bass, and Will Mount strumming the guitar.

You’ll find more awesome battles underway at some of these blog listed below and if you’d like to be included in the fun, then contact Stephen requesting to be added to the list.

Polls close noon (EST) on Nov 8th

Who gets your vote Diana Coupland or the no name trio?

Other than me, does anyone want to watch Dr. No?  I hope you enjoyed the first installment of my James Bond Theme Song series. Set your calendar for a week from today for the battle results.

On Saturday, I learned that Sean Connery passed away. He was my favorite James Bond and an extraordinarily talented actor.  Rest in peace, 007. Your service to God and country is finally done. Blessings and prayers to the Connery family

ATTENTION BoTBers!! Please tell me in comments which day(s) of the month you’re playing? Alright, I mentioned you’re getting two punches of mewsic for the price of one. I’m gonna leave you with some great mewsic spinning on the ole 4M virtual turntable. The YT Dr. No soundtrack playlist. Hit play and then the dance floor.  Have a boogietastic day!

x💋x💋, Cathy

Well, I’m late but better late than never, as the saying goes. Many of us had Bond on the mind with the passing of Sean Connery. Your soundtrack made me realize just how many years it’s been since I last saw Dr. No (certainly more than 20 years ago). I was too young to see some of them in the movies when they first came out. I also remember a friend’s parents owning the Ian Fleming books and we were explicitly not allowed to look at any of them – yes, I can imagine why! (I haven’t read any of them as an adult.) For the BoTB I pick (yes, I know the voting closed) Diana Coupland over No Name. I listened to some of the playlist and it was pleasant listening. Somehow doesn’t seem like the 60’s. Anyway, it was nice for a sad day like today with the passing of Alex Trebek.

      Alana,

Ian Fleming would be considered a sexist today but I think the names he gave his female characters are funny in a naughty way. I’m not at all offended but amused by his sense of humor. Your vote would’ve tightened the polls by one but not enough for Coupland to carry the victory as she was down by two prior. I like the instrumental version quite a bit but I figured on a subconscious level that Diana’s vocal arrangement would carry the majority. Looks like I was wrong! Oh yes, it was to hear the mews about Alex Trebek. So many celebrities are passing away. It makes me question my own mortality. 80 isn’t old at all anymore. I’ll be 59 next month and I’m like, “Where did the years go?” If I could go back in time to tell my younger self to not wish my days away that it’ll happen all on its own without any help then I would but I’m sure I wouldn’t listen to my older self. What kid would?

      John,

I think Diana sounds cute. I’m not sure how I’d feel if I listened to more than a sample of her singing Calypso but it was purrfect for this song, I thought. That being said, I can’t say which artist I’d give my vote to either. Another vote for the NO NAME TRIO!

My vote goes to Diana Coupeland. I love the beat which works so well in the film. The Kingston Trio seemed a bit dull to me. I know Dr. No and own the video…actually we have lol the Bond films and I agree that Sean Connery was the best.

    • Cathy Kennedy

      Birgit,

Thanks for popping by to cast your vote for DIANA COUPLAND! We own nearly all the James Bond films, too. I think many are now available on Netflix or Amazon Prime for streaming.

    HiYa, CAThy! It’s That You?

I don’t believe I have ever seen a James Bond movie in my life. When it comes to secret agent spy stories, Maxwell Smart is more my style.

I enjoyed both of these renditions of the tune, but without a trace o’ doubt, I preferred DIANA COUPLAND. Her version really had that swing, and as we all know, “It Don’t Mean A Thing If It Ain’t Got That Swing!”

The second version seemed pretty stiff and perfunctory by comparison – and as we all also know, “Everything Is Relative”.

CAThy, my frien’, I hope you has a swingin’ week!

      Stephen,

WOW, I can’t believe you haven’t seen any of the James Bond films! If get the nudge to do it, watch the older stuff. Daniel Craig is a bit of disappointment as 007. He’s a good actor but he’s way too serious in his role. I’m sure that’s partly the writers fault. They took a lot of the iconic fun stuff out of the newer movies. Political correctness ruins everything it touches!

I have your vote for DIANA COUPLAND, my friend. Have a bandtastic afternoon!

    • Cathy Kennedy

      Mimi,

NO NAME TRIO is taking most of the votes in this showdown. I really didn’t know what to expect so this is interesting. Thanks for joining me on the dance floor, my friend!

    • Cathy Kennedy

      Hey Marie,

No problems here. The linky worked just fine from the instant I put it in my post. Sometimes things don’t cooperate like you want. Have a rockin’ good afternoon and thanks for stopping by to boogie with me!

    • Cathy Kennedy

      Brian,

I believe many were saddened by the news of Connery’s death. We watched The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen on Amazon Prime while on staycation featuring Sean Connery. I’ve been waiting for this film to pop up in our streaming service so I’m happy we finally got to see it. It was a fun film.

Thanks for voting for NO NAME TRIO, my furriend!

Starting from my junior high days in the sixties I faithfully went to a theater to see every James Bond film up to about the nineties. After that I would watch them on video or DVD. I’ve long been a Bond fan and have enjoyed the theme music that was used in the films.

I don’t recall that opening blind men sequence in Dr No but it’s been a long time since I’ve seen it. I can’t say that I’m a very big fan of calypso music, but it does have a happy sound.

Of the two Battle contestants I’m going to go with the No Name Trio since I didn’t care all that much for the vocals though the music was good. But still, Trio it is for me.

      Lee,

I didn’t see my first James Bond film until after we got married. Back in those days they still played the older ones. It was always so exciting to see a new Bond flick! The writing, acting, location, mewsic, everything was spot on. The newer movies lack the feel of the old features.

Another vote for NO NAME TRIO. Thanks for joining me in this showdown, my friend!

Those three little mousies are the cutest that I’ve ever seen, CK😸Glad you’re back with some great tunes. We prefurr Diana Coupland’s song and the 007 intro. He will live on in our memory furrever and you’re so right, for us he’s also the one and only 007😺Pawkisses for a Happy Monday and Week ahead🐾😽💞

    • Cathy Kennedy

      Hey Binky!

Those little mousies are the only kind of mousies I’d let into my house, all others are not welcomed. lol

I have your vote recorded for DIANA COUPLAND. Thanks for playing along and for joining me on the dance floor, my furriend!

    • Cathy Kennedy

      Mike,

I’m glad you’re getting back to your old self again. I know this is a difficult transition but your darlin’ wife would want you to be happy. One day, you’ll be reunited. Thanks for sharing the dance floor with me, my friend. God bless!

  • Sandee

Awww on those three blind mice babies. Adorable. Fits right into your music this week too.

Tough one this week. I like them both, but I’m going with the No Name Trio.

Thank you for joining the Awww Mondays Blog Hop.

Have a fabulous Awww Monday and week, Cathy. Love and hugs. ♥

    • Cathy Kennedy

      Sandee,

I try to tie together my daily hops with a theme so the three blind mice babies added the awww factor to my mewsical post.

Gotcha down for NO NAME TRIO, my dear!

  • Thomas Anderson

    Hi, Cathy!

Happy November, Awww-some 4M Monday and band battle day, dear friend! I hope you and DH are well and that you had a nice weekend.

As you mentioned in the text, the theme of your BOTB is timely given the Halloween death of Sean Connery, the Scottish actor who starred as Bond in 007 films of the 60s. I saw them all when first released to theaters. I agree with you that Connery was the best Bond. In my book he was the only Bond. As you might know, Margaret Nolan, who played ‘Dink’ in Goldfinger, also died a few weeks ago. I well remember the song “Kingston Calypso” used in Dr. No. While Calypso isn’t my favorite style of mewsic I enjoyed both versions of the soundtrack song presented in your battle. Diana Coupland’s vocal version is more traditional and has a lighthearted, whimsical feel. I think I prefer the instrumental version performed by the no name trio because the arrangement is less whimsical. In other words, I appreciated their straightforward musicianship. I vote for act #2 – the no namers!

Thank you for a refreshingly different BOTB, Cathy. If your hiatus is over and you are returning to full time blogging, I welcome you back. I wish you a safe and happy week and month of November, dear friend!

    • Cathy Kennedy

      Tom,

You were the early bird as always! We own most of the Bond films with the exception of a few of the newer ones possibility but they don’t really excited us. Daniel Craig is a great actor but he’s not 007 in my opinion and the writers have added to much political correctness in the films taking away the fun. I’m not sure that I heard Margaret Nolan passed away. The old entertainers are leaving us rather quickly it seems. It’s quite sad, too.

I appreciate your vote for the NO NAME TRIO!

Have a great week, my friend!
