January Song Titles and Lyrics

Good Monday morning, Kittens and Dawgs!  Dang, if it ain’t the day before the last day of the first month of the new year already.  That’s the long version of saying, this is the last Monday.  Where’s my coffee?

Hopefully, your day isn’t so January-ish as in the cold snowy variety. Our forecast called for some of that fluff overnight but I haven’t looked out the window yet. Grab something hot to drink and settle in with me for a bit as I share with you January Song Titles and Lyrics!

The Decemberists

Thank you for including me in your Monday. ? My friend, XmasDolly who puts on the Monday’s Music Moves Me ? linky party is a bit short-handed and I volunteered to co-host as long for as long as she needs me.  You’re invited to hit the dance floor.

I schedule my Monday mewsic posts but our Spotlight Dancer, John came up with the 4M theme Songs with blue in the title or songs you play when you’re feeling blue and since I got wind of it early enough I am able to share my pick. 🙂

CRYSTAL BLUE PERSUASION Tommy James & the Shondells

Great theme, John, and congrats on being in the spotlight this week! 😉

Now back to my regular scheduled post theme. 🙂 Van Morrison sings, “Gotta get through January”, we’re just about to see January scoot right out the door.

FIRE IN THE BELLY Van Morrison & Steve Winwood

The Gypsies’ life wouldn’t suit me but I think that’s what O’Brien lyrics is referring to. What do you think?

As long as I remember I’ve been wandering
January to December I go wandering

WANDERING Tim O’Brien

I’m not good when it comes to deciphering poems or song lyrics but BLS penned the words

I can’t forget the cold
That fell January day

Throughout the song, it mentions the cold in January, which gives me the sense of someone’s passing. What’s your interpretation?

JANUARY Black Label Society

I’ll admit it’s hard for me to come up with songs or lyrics off the sleeve but what January song titles or lyrics can you think of or are you like me drawing a blank without Google’s help?

Thank you for including me in your Monday. I’m gonna leave you with one more by a Scottish singer who hit the British Singles Chart at #11 in 1980 with this song! 😉

JANUARY FEBRUARY Barbara Dickson

Oh yeah, I invite you back for tomorrow’s early February edition of Battle of the Bands.

    1. Ellen, I’m glad you liked today’s songs. I wanted to share these earlier in the month but I kept changing things as the month went on. lol At least I got it squeezed in the last Monday of the month. 🙂

    1. Patrick, Barbara Dickerson is a new-to-me discovery and happy find I might add. I’m glad you liked it as well. Thanks for dancing over to listen to my tunes!

  2. Hi, Cathy!

I enjoyed your January songs and lyrics along with your song with “blue” in the title, “Crystal Blue Persuasion,” one of my favorites by Tommy James, a record that was riding high on the chart during the summer of 1969 when I was age 19. “Crystal Blue Persuasion” was one of the many songs of the late 60s and 70s that were wide open to interpretation. Many fans believed the song was a drug reference, but Tommy insisted he pulled inspiration and words from the Bible and that it was a song about a future in which mankind lived in peace and harmony.

Some of the lyrics of your January songs caught my ear. In the Decemberists song “January Hymn,” the following words resonated with me and brought back memories of my childhood and teenage years when I loved being outdoors in the snow after dark:

How I lived a childhood in the snow
And all my teens in tow
    Stuffed in strata of clothes

Hail the winter days after dark
    Wandering the gray memorial park
    A fleeting beating of hearts

I also appreciated Black Label Society’s lyrics. “I feel that January’s cold shall never disappear.”

I was also fascinated with “January February” by Barbara Dickson, a Scottish folk singer who moved into the genre of mainstream pop with that particular single released near the end of January 1980. In appearance and in voice, Barbara immediately brought to mind another Scottish pop singer, Sheena Easton, whose first single “Modern Girl” was released in the UK one month later in February 1980.

You did your homework on this post, dear friend Cathy, and it was a very nice one. Have a great day and I’ll see you tomorrow!

    1. Tom,

Thank you! I’m no match for you, my friend. You always leave such enlightening tidbits in comments regarding my post and I really appreciate your involvement. The lyrics you quoted from January Hymn could be a flashback for most of us. The teen years often feel dark and troublesome. Those years are the ones where we’re trying to define who we are and where we want to go. It’s not an easy task but one most of us manage to pull through ok. Oh yeah, Easton is another Scottish singer who struck it big in the early 80s. Dickson has a nice voice but I like Sheena’s vocals better. Again, thank you for being a part of Monday Mewsic Moves Me, my friend! Have a good week and I’ll be seeing you soon!

  3. Good choices Cathy especially Steve Winwood & Van Morrison I’ve always loved their voices, I always thought that Steve Winwood had the same tone to his voice as Frankie Valli and Phil Collins.

Have a tanfastic day Cathy 🙂

    1. Steve, Steve & Van do a great job together. You’re right Steve does have some of the same vocal inflections as Valli and Collins. I never thought about that until you mentioned it. Thanks for hitting the dance floor with the 4M crew! I’m dancing your way now. 🙂

  4. I associate January with cold weather and it’s been cold for L.A. this year. Today and yesterday we stated getting a warming trend with temps going up near 80 (or maybe past that). Such a beautiful clear day too where we could see the snow covered mountains looking much closer than they actually are, but still not all that far away.

Don’t miss that back-east cold weather all that much. My wife says that she’d like it to be cold like that all winter, but she doesn’t know what that’s like for extended periods. I’m getting too old for cold.
