Monday's Music Moves Me

Hard Rockers Doin’ It Soft

J.E. Broyhill’s words inscribed on a plague in a small park in Blowing Rock, North Carolina and I knew this was the purrrfect “SPARKS” boast we all need. You’re invited to join McGuffy’s Reader for more sparkles of inspiration. Have a sparkletastic day! 😉

Good morning, Kittens and Dawgs!  Whew, I can’t believe this is the last Monday in June, can you?  Anywho, I’m glad you joined me this morning before I step on to the dance floor let me recap June 15th BoTB.  The late Mary Travers went head to toe with YouTuber, Holly Henry.  The newcomer did okay but fizzled after a while making it a clear victory for the popular folk singer by the end of last week, at which point I knew my vote wouldn’t help my favorite and most interesting artist (Holly).  This is how the voting went down.  Those favoring Mary best were….Debbie, Mary, Mike, Lee, Stephen, Ellen, Sandee, LMB, Eugenia, Mimi, Cathy (not me), & Birgit.  Holly snagged votes from …Michele, John, Tom, Jacqui, Red, & little ole ME.   Mary had more than twice the number of tallies over Holly with a 12 to 6 win!   Let’s listen to a very familiar classic Mary Travers sang as part of the 60s group, Peter, Paul, and Mary.

Thanks to everyone who voted, making this showdown exciting.  I’m need to take a semi-hiatus from blogging. My next BoTB will be a 2-for-1 special as I’m pairing it with my Monday’s Mewsic Moves Me post, so mark your calendar for July 16th!     Are you ready to groove?  This week’s theme is “your choice” mewsic picks and today I’m boogieing to these Hard Rockers Doin’ It Soft songs!

Your daughter is gorgeous! I bet you were in awe with how fast 30 years flew by! 😉

Love all your song choices – many were new introductions to me. 😉 Thanks for the dance, my friend! 🙂

  • XmasDolly

First of all, important things FIRST! Your baby girl is beautiful! WOW! VERY Pleasant on the eyes for sure & I never heard this Happy Birthday by Elvis! Thanks for sharing. I saw the brief hiatus honey when is that going to start & when are you coming back to us???? Well, you have a good rest and a wonderful time my friend… Loved hearing Peter, Paul & Mary once again. I always love listening to their blending such lovely music. HUGS

    • Cathy Kennedy

      Marie,

Thank you for the lovely compliments about DD#1. I have to agree with you 110%! 😉

I’m not taking a hiatus from the dance floor anytime soon. I just need to cut posting back to only Mondays and I will do BoTB once a month during the summer. If ever I take full time away from Blogosphere then I will let you know. 🙂

Thanks for stopping by to dance with me.

Happy early birthday to your “June Angel”. When I saw your theme, I prepared for a great playlist – and was not disappointed. I do like it when hard rockers turn soft, because some slow, wonderful ballards have come out of that “softer side” genre. Some new ones to me (such as Scorpion’s Holiday – enjoyed the slow part and them getting a little more hard in the last minute of the song, and Opeth’s Burden) others beloved favorites (November Rain, Beth, Under the Bridge). Staind is played a lot on satellite radioso I was a little surprised that this was a song new to me- the Stone Sour song may have been good except it was overplayed on that same satellite radio station we listen to ) and Thank you for brightening my day!

    • Cathy Kennedy

      Alana,

I figured most would know these songs on my playlist, many of them are new-to-me but I thoroughly enjoyed pulling these songs together. I think hearing typical hard rockers singing a ballad makes them shine brighter and it opens the door for non-fans to discover their talent.

Thank you for the bday wishes for my ‘June Angel’. 🙂

    CATHY ~
I hope your daughter has a terrific birthday!

You had a really good turnout for your last BOTB. It always embarrasses me a little bit when BOTBers have better BOTB turnouts than the founder does. (Doh!)

I like that quote on the plaque, up at the top of your blog post. If we never ran into any patches of trouble, we would have no opportunities to prove we have faith in God. And how then would we know with certainty that we genuinely DO trust God if our faith never got put to a test?

STMcC Presents ‘BATTLE OF THE BANDS’

    • Cathy Kennedy

      Stephen,

You have nothing to be embarrassed about regarding your battle turns out. I’m in awe of folks who have a full-time job but make time to blog. That just amazes me. I spend way too much time in Blogosphere. That’s why I need to step back during the summer when traffic is slow. There’s more to do than just blog. Oh, be still my hear! Yep, it’s true and I need to devote my upcoming semi-hiatus to those things. I have to agree with you, if we don’t hit snags in life then others can’t see God working because it’s generally during times of trial that people really pay the most attention. It’s difficult to turn everything over to God without interfering with His plans but I know personally allowing God to take full reign over my messes that I have real peace. I’m not saying that I don’t feel doubt creep in but with God, I am able to push those worries aside and remember that He’s in control. This took years to learn but once I did….WOW, what a difference in attitude I had! Thanks for visiting, my friend.

  • Comedy Plus

Awww on those cute kitties and I love that quote. You rock. You always have the best music too. We are alike where music is concerned.

Have a purrfect Awww Monday, my friend. Big hugs. ♥

  • Debbie D.

Good morning, Cathy. Wishing your DD#1 a very Happy Birthday. Lovely pics! Same day as hubby, but he’s a lot older. LOL That was a decisive victory for Mary. 🙂 “Leaving On a Jet Plane” is a beautiful song, too. Love your playlist for today! As you know, I’m a rocker from way back. Scorpions (a huge favourite) have many beautiful ballads and are equally adept with them as they are with the harder stuff. Fantastic live performers, as well. “Nothing Else Matters” is my favourite Metallica song. Gives me chills, every time. ♥ Thanks for the entertainment! Have a great week.

    • Cathy Kennedy

      Debbie,

Yep, Mary stole the show! I always liked PP&M’s “Leaving On a Jet Plane”. Folkstyle singing is generally the mewsic genre I tend to migrate to often but not exclusively. I was surprised when I came up with this playlist how much I enjoyed these hard rockers. I can see myself going back to some of these groups to listen to more of their song selections with Scorpions being one of them, so don’t be surprised if I do more features on these bands. 🙂

  • Jacqui Murray

Lovely, Cathy. I can’t believe Elvis’ daughter is now broke. Good grief!

Yeah, I know, weird that’s the first thing I think of when I see Elvis’ picture. Sigh.

    • Cathy Kennedy

      Jacqui,

WOW, I didn’t know Lisa Marie is broke! DH was just telling me the other day that someone mentioned that Johnny Depp is either broke or nearly broke. My first thought was drug addiction. I don’t know if that’s the reason his fortune is gone but I wouldn’t be surprised if it’s to blame. Every time I see Elvis’ photo I think of his bad health in his later years, along with his addiction to prescription drugs. He died way too young! Going down that path (drugs – legal or not) can be a slippery, dangerous road and often times fatal. It’s truly sad.

  • Cathy Keisha

Happy Birthday to your “little one.” TW loves November Rain but she had a thing for Axel Rose back in the day. I’m going to have to listen to the rest of them when I have more time.

    • Cathy Kennedy

      Cathy,

It’s a joy to see you on the dance floor. I thought Axl Rose was the name of another band. That goes to show how little I know about GNR. I did skim through Wikipedia’s collection on Rose. His biological father was a horrible man. Death (he was murdered) is too good for the evil. I always hope that somewhere along the way these sorts of individuals realize their wickedness and turn their lives to Christ. That kind of change while it secures a person’s afterlife, however, it places the burden on that person to carry their darkest, ugliest secrets for the remainder of their days. That’s a fate worse than death for a true repenting heart. Anywho, it sounds like Rose has had a few demons to deal with himself over the years. I supposed that’s where much of his songwriting inspiration came from, too. Thanks for dropping by!

  • John Holton

An interesting list. It’s always interesting to hear what bands can do other than what they’re famous for. (Does that make sense?) I think Grand Funk Railroad’s “I’m Your Captain/Closer To Home” would fit in this category, but Grand Funk wasn’t just a hard rock band to begin with.

I really should go through my playlists and fill in the blanks left by people leaving YouTube, either under their own power or under Google’s…

  • A ShutterBug Explores

Oh what a loving post ~ Happy Birthday to you beautiful daughter and that last photo of the kitties in hammock is so precious! Love Peter, Paul and Mary album too ~

Happy Birthday to your daughter with those beautiful eyes. I love the quote and it is so true. I’m glad Mary won. I love that song, “Send me an Angel.” These songs are some of the most beautiful I think.

    • Cathy Kennedy

      Birgit,

Thanks for the bday wishes for DD#1. I often refer to her as my June Angel. 🙂 I love ballads! DH mentioned the other day, you don’t hear love songs much anymore. Everything these days seems so angry and hate-filled lyrics. “Send Me An Angel” is a truly beautiful song!

  • Driller's Place

Great quote. It is something that most of us need to be reminded of. We are stone cold blind to what the future holds, but we often have 20/20 vision when looking back on our past. If we knew where God was taking us, we might not want to join Him in the journey, but when recalling the adventure we can see His work in every aspect of our lives.

    • Cathy Kennedy

      Driller,

We are definitely blind to what God has planned for us and it’s always easy to see His had at work in retrospect. I try to see what He’s doing in the moment but often fail to see the scheme of things, I guess He wishes for me to discover that at the end of the journey. Thanks for visiting!

  • 15andmeowing

Happy Birthday to your beautiful daughter! Great theme and song choices, especially Motley Crue- I saw the in concert twice in my younger years 🙂 Sorry I am sitting this week out on the mewsic. Great spark! XO

    • Cathy Kennedy

      Ellen,

Thanks for the bday wishes for DD#1. I can’t believe how fast the years have gone by. When I was 30, I had two wee ones. Boy were those busy days for me! It’s great seeing you here today even if you aren’t spinning your own tunes at your place. 🙂

  • Thomas Anderson

    Hi, Cathy!

Happy birthday this Thursday to your darling daughter, a cutie than and now. Is she the one who lives in Haven, Maine? 🙂 That’s a great pic of her as a baby. Is that a giant plastic Humpty Dumpty egg that was used to hold her toys?

Your band battle proves the power of name (brand) recognition. Your ears matched mine this time. We both thought Holly was the more interesting artist, but she could not overcome the more famous Mary Travers.

Typically I do not like it when hard rockers turn soft. However there are a few favorites in your song set and great memories attached to their videos. The nicely remastered hit single “Beth” sung by Kiss drummer Peter Criss was arguably the highlight of the band’s so-bad-it’s-great 1978 TV movie Kiss Meets The Phantom of the Park produced by Hanna-Barbera. I have watched the goofy flick half a dozen times and always get a kick out of it. Along with Kiss the film features Terry Lester, the original “Jack Abbott” on my favorite soap The Young and the Restless. The other three videos I would like to mention were all played heavily on the MTV station where I worked. Motley Crue’s “Home Sweet Home” was by far the most popular of the three, requested a dozen times a day for months. “Send Me And Angel” is a pretty song that I never get tired of hearing. The vid for “Is This Love” by Whitesnake features actress and model Tawny Kitaen who was David Coverdale’s girlfriend at the time. Tawny was hot in the 80s but her career stalled and she had several run-ins with the law in the 2000s.

Thank you very much for the mewsic and memories this morning, dear friend Cathy! Have a great week!

    • Cathy Kennedy

      Tom,

No, DD#1 lives here in town. Yes, the Humpty Dumpty egg was her toy box. I can’t believe she’ll be entering her 30s in a few days. I ask myself every time, where did the years go? One day, she’ll say the same.

Unlike you, I like hearing hard rockers doing ballads. If it weren’t for such songs then I’m not sure I’d recognize their true talent because heavy rock just doesn’t catch my ears usually. Of course, these days, I can listen to yesteryear superstars and say, “WOW, those guys really knew how to sing!” compared to the lacking star quality in today’s mewsicians. I appreciated you sharing your recollections and tidbits on some of the songs. Tawny Kitaen was a knock out in her day. That’s sad to read she had trouble with cocaine. Nothing good ever comes from any kind of substance abuse. It’s a shame that all too many people get sucked into this trap, too. Thanks for popping by this morning, my friend. Have a good week!

  • Mary B

    Hi Cathy!

I do love me some rock ballads! I remember back in the day… it was said that the main reason the rockers did the ballads were for the girls. The boys would come to the concerts to rock hard, but they had the slower paced, softer songs for the girls. It may be true. If it weren’t for some of these tunes, I may have never listened to the other songs certain artists played. Was great sharing the dance floor with you!

    ~Mary

    • Cathy Kennedy

      Mary,

Maybe that’s the reason but whatever I am glad these hard rockers produced these fabulous ballads! Thanks for sharing the dance floor with me today.

  • greyzoned/angelsbark

    Hi Cathy,
Well you were smart to tie in your BOTB Results with today’s 4M post. I still haven’t tallied my battle votes so I have no idea how it turned out. Worse is that I haven’t even yet had a chance to go over and respond to all those who left votes and comments. It was a crazy-beyond-crazy week. I thought I’d get to it by the 22nd, then the 23rd, by the 24th I had forgotten about it and here it is the 25th and I’ve yet to do it. But I will. I promise! I hate falling down on the job!
Your battle was very cool. I’m not surprised at the result. I kinda knew that Mary Travors would take the win but that Holly girl was interesting to listen to. Thanks for including Mary’s version of “Leavin’ on a Jet Plane”. LOVE that song!

Now, as for your 4M post: COOL theme! “Hard Rockers Doin’ It Soft”: I love it! Great idea. And terrific playlist. Some of these I’m not familiar with so it’s nice to be introduced to these soft songs by headbangers. My favs are GNR’s November Rain, Metallica’s Nothing Else Matters, RHCP’s Under the Bridge, Scorpion’s Send Me an Angel, and Whitesnake’s Is This Love. As far as Kiss’ Beth goes, I probably could like it but it was way overplayed in its heyday and I found myself turning the dial when it came on back then. The other bands that you presented I’m unfamiliar with.
This is nice to hear some ballads right before I go to bed…
Gonna catch some zzz’s and I’ll see you out there on the dance floor…

PS: Sweet pics of your daughter. She doesn’t look 30 at all! She looks really young! Good for her. At first when I read it, I read it as “DH’s 30th birthday” and I said to myself “Shit, that girl got her a young one!” haha

    XOXO
    Michele at Angels Bark

    • Cathy Kennedy

      Michele,

It’s a struggle to remember to share the results posts and in the summer it’s even harder, so it’s easy to try to tie it to another post. Next month, I’m scaling back to only my 4M posts with the exception of mid-month BoTB participation. I need to get serious with other matters that need my attention. I’m glad you enjoyed Miss Holly. I thought she might have a shot at it but Mary trumped this round. I’m glad you enjoyed my song selections. Oh heck, no I don’t have a young husband. In fact, I wouldn’t want one THAT much younger than me! I’d feel EVEN more like a mom to my husband if there was that kind of age difference. lol It absolutely amazes me that there are men and women who hook up with someone young enough to be their child. That’s just too weird for me. I was always told by others that I looked younger than my age, so maybe, DD#1 inherited that trait after me. Lord knows she doesn’t look like me. She favors her daddy. 🙂 Thanks for boogieing with me, dearie. Have a great day!
