Monday's Music Moves Me

February Song along with my 4M Mail, Soup, Vaccum Theme Playlist

Purs and hisses, Kittens and Dawgs! How was your weekend? It’s fabulous to see you and welcome to Monday’s Mewsic Moves Me

For February, I’m the honorary co-hostess.  That basically means I get to pick the themes.  Yay, me!  Anywho,  coming up with ideas for mewsic is tricky especially as long as I’ve been doing this and most of you, too.  I used the National Day Calendar for inspiration, so I’m asking everyone to use these keywords in lyrics/song titles: mail, soup, and vacuum.  I’m gonna a twist to this theme by throwing in some alternative words to consider zip, slurp, and suck.  I mean, that’s what comes to mind when I think of mail, soup, and vacuum, don’t you?  Are you ready to groove?  Hit play to listen to my 9-song playlist!

  1. Air Mail Special ~ Ella Fitzgerald Years ago I used to do a lot of pen-palling and I recall writing on the outside of the envelopes for international travel, ‘AIR MAIL’.
  2. Email ~ Pet Shop Boys Since those years of snail-mailing pals technology progressed and so did I moving to email correspondence but even that has fallen on by the wayside.  Now, I just keep up with distant friends once a year with my annual Christmas newsletter.
  3. Zip Gun Bop ~ Royal Crown Revue Air Mail to email letters travel like a ‘ZIP’. The first time I’d heard of Royal Crown Revue was when we saw the movie starring Jim Carey, The Mask. I love their big band, jazz sound, so it was really cool finding this track.
  4. Black Bean Soup ~ David Soul. The winter spurs my cravings for a good hot bowl of soup.  Normally, I think of Chilli but I can go for black bean soup or even red beans and rice. Yum!
  5. The Ballad of Chicken Soup ~ Carole King. This is such a funny name for a song but it’s a song from the children’s musical, Really Rosie, from 1962.  In the mid-70s a TV animated version of the mewsical aired with King doing the voice-over of the main character, Rosie.
  6. Dance the Slurp  Whenever you have soup, you can’t help but SLURP it. This little fun 60s novelty diddy isn’t about soup but an icy beverage found in American 7-11s which the company produced to promote their Slurpee drink.  The artist is unknown. Without doing a lot of digging I learned that in the 90s DJ Shadow and Cut Chemist built their legendary ‘Brainfreeze’ mix around it.  I think this is an album, but I’m not sure.
  7. I Wanna Be Yours ~ Arctic Monkey.  ‘Vacuum’ is a word not used heavily in song titles but you can find it lyrics as in this song with the opening line…”I wanna be your vacuum cleaner Breathing in your dust”.  The song draws comparisons similar to this with other objects.  It’s a new-to-me tune like all the others on this playlist and has a pleasing sound to my ears.
  8. The Wall Song ~Crosby & Nash.  Toward the middle to end of the second verse, the lyrics read “And there’s a place like a vacuum waiting inside you”.  Again, a  newly introduced song but I liked the way the mewsic flowed.
  9. My Life Would Suck Without You ~ Kelly Clarkson.  This might be the only song title I recognized and while I certainly do not like to use the keyword substitute, I feel would feel like it if DH wasn’t in my life.
To celebrate & honor BIL#2’s birthday yesterday I’ve choosen a fun little ditty from the year he was born, 1951, I Tawt I Taw a Puddy Tat (Mel Blanc).

🎶This is a mewsic linky party ONLY, all other posts are subjected to removal or labeled ‘NO MUSIC’.🎶

We’re not mewsic snobs. If you’re not following the theme that’s okay, just as long as your post contains mewsic. All that we ask is for you is to add a link back to this hop with anyone of our co-hosts.

Now, join  XmasDolly (4M Brain Child) and my fellow 4M Co-hostesses Stacy,  Alana, & Colette on the dance floor.

Although I wasn’t big into pen pals as a child, I sure remember the air mail envelopes, the thin onion paper and the stamps (and the extra postage – air mail was such a big deal!) I only knew one of these songs (Carole King). I’d have to say my favorite was Ella Fitzgerald although the Pet Shop Boys song was pretty mellow.

      Alana,

I remember using the thin paper in the 70s with my first penpal and the long, long wait in between letters. That was the hardest part…waiting for mews from across the distant waters to reach my hands. I think it took about four-six weeks before I got a reply. Now days it’s easier to zip an email, send a text, or even call a penpal. Technology has made the world a smaller place.

It’s now Monday evening and I can’t wait to come back and participate! I would have it up by now, but I left the state Friday after work and spent the weekend with my parents – and the internet is not conducive to blogging there. I loved some on your list…now I need to go find a few of my own! I’ll also be coming by to check out your BotB post soon, I hope. I really miss the battles!

    • Cathy Kennedy

      Kim,

I’m glad you came by to boogie. No rush, join the party when you can. I certainly understand the difficulties of being out of town and poor Internet connection. I shall look forward to your mewsic picks. I:)

Josh Groban is really a true artist in every sense of the word & thank you for the introduction to his song “February Song”. It’s absolutely beautiful. When you talk about skat you might as well think of Ella, but she is totally the Queen of skat for sure!!! Loved her song!!! Your other tunes I have never heard before between the Pet Shop Boys & so on… I didn’t even know David Soul sang, much less hear a song he did. I thought he was just an actor. hahaha Carol King I thought she’d be too classy to sing a song about Chicken with Rice soup! ~snicker-snicker~ Then with your slurp-slurp tune okay I admit it, I by-passed that one. Then I had enough when I heard the song start out as I want to be your vacuum cleaner. bwahahahahahahaha I couldn’t take no more. I even tried to listen to Kelly Clarkson’s tune, but couldn’t stop laughing to I tweetie too… oh my gosh! Thanks for the laughs my friend. This had to be the most fun I had in a long time! Thanks much & have a great afternoon!!! Great theme!!!

      Marie,

I bet you just forgot that David Soul was a singer. The song I know by him best is 1976 #1 hit, ‘Don’t Give Up On Us’. I don’t think he did a whole lot after that that really amounted to much. I’m glad you enjoyed my playlist. Your comment sure did put a smile on my face. Have a boogietastic day, dearie!

    Hi Cathy,
Just wanted to take a quick moment and jump over here to check out your really creative theme! I need a break from paying bills and music sounded like the best option. Interesting way to come up with your themes, the National Day Calendar. Had I been participating in this one I know it would’ve presented quite a challenge. The best was the vacuum lyric. haha, that cracked me up.
Thanks for bringing back the memories of my Pen Pal days. I too used to pen pal with overseas pen pals and you jogged my memory of going to the little local ‘mom & pop’ hardware store (remember those??). It was called Hodges Hardware and Mrs. Hodges ran a little post office in the back. She was such a mean old lady and not friendly at all. Everyone used to call her “crab-ass”. But I remember the smell of the store and especially the creaking sound when we would walk on those old wooden floors. The post office was in the back corner where she had a little window and a ledge. And I too remember the via ‘Air Mail’ stamp and all those cool stamps. Over the years I guess I wore old Mrs Hodges down as I managed to eventually get a semi-friendly greeting and a smile out of her occasionally. I wonder if that old little building is still standing there? I desperately need a trip back home. I haven’t been back to my home town since 1998! I haven’t been anywhere since 2000 and I really need a break away from life…

Anyway, I gotta get back to life now and finish paying all these dang hospital and doctor bills. Cool playlist here and a really unique theme. The song that I like best here is Royal Crown Revue’s “Zip Bog Gun”. Another song that fosters a trip back in time… Fun!

I miss you all and am looking forward to getting back into all this blogging stuff soon…
    Take care,

      Michele,

I’m glad you took a break from life to unwind to my tunes today. I love how mewsic can take ya back to fond memories. I bet that mean old lady wasn’t nearly as mean as everyone thought. Chances are she was just too busy to really show her true side. When I was a kid, we had a neighbor who was grouchy pants. He was married and his wife was nice. His mother lived with them and she was just a sweet old lady. By the time I got into my teens just before they moved, Mr. B didn’t seem quite as mean as I remembered him being. I guess it’s just the way we see someone sometimes. We miss having you on the dance floor and hopefully, life will slow down for you before too long. The important thing is to take care of you and your mother first. We’re here for ya and keeping you in our prayers. When did you say you’re having surgery again? I’m so forgetful!

    • Cathy Kennedy

      Kathe,

I don’t get much snail mail, except I have one good penpal whose so faithful to send greetings for all the holidays. She’s such a sweetheart! I wish I were good about such things.

I am a huge fan of Arctic Monkeys and love the way Alex writes. His songs are always full of unexpected surprises.

  • DrillerAA

Ella Fitzgerald and Billie Holiday is not a combination you see everyday and there is no one like them today. Great sound to start a Monday morning.

    • Cathy Kennedy

      Mimi,

It’s a happy place because of friends like you who frequently stop by for visits. Thanks for sharing the mewsic with me on the dance floor, dearie!

  • sandy

i love reading your posts. Anyway i never heard that song ….”I wanna be your vacuum cleaner Breathing in your dust”. lyrics… And puddy cat – wow i was born in 1950 so that was a big part of my childhood…I don’t write anything anymore as far as letters, etc. I am not good at email either. I finally bought stamps over Christmas and mailed out 3 cards. That’s about it.

    • Cathy Kennedy

      Sandy,

I’m happy that you enjoy my posts. I appreciate you telling me this. It really warms my heart. I’m not very good with any form of communication outside of blogging it seems these days. lol I remember there was a time when I loved talking on the phone for hours or writing a letter like a short novel to friends to recap the goings on in my life but that’s a thing of the past. I sort of miss that and then again I don’t. Does that even make sense? Probably not but then that’s normal for me to not make much sense. 🙂

  • Sandee

Love the February Song. Not heard that before and I don’t recognize any of the songs on your list. So much music and so little time.

I love the pup and the deer. So precious. Huge Awww.

Have a fabulous day, my friend. Love you. ♥

  • Thomas Anderson

    Hi, Cathy!

Happy 4M Monday on Sunday, dear friend!

I thoroughly enjoyed the 4M theme related songs you posted today beginning with “February Song,” sung by Josh Groban. His voice is sweet, smooth and mellow. I am always amazed to hear “scat singing,” the kind so artfully executed by Ella Fitzgerald in that live performance of “Air Mail Special.” In the 80s and 90s our MTV style station ran the mewsic videos of the Pet Shop Boys in heavy rotation. Their song “Email” is new to my ears. I love the retro jazz band sound of Royal Crown Revue doing “Zip Gun Bop.” I didn’t see The Mask and therefore the band is new to me. Do you remember David Soul starring in the television series Starsky & Hutch in the mid and late 70s? I have heard him sing but was not familiar with “Black Bean Soup,” a song from his eponymous 1976 album. Also new to my ears is that novelty ditty created to promote The Slurpee drink sold at 7-Eleven stores. It doesn’t surprise me that the goofy record came and went without becoming a hit on the chart. 🙂 That song by Arctic Monkeys with the lyrics ”I wanna be your vacuum cleaner breathing in your dust” has to be the most unusual composition ever. I thought you were kidding about the word vacuum being used in a song, but you managed to find two of them, the second being the song by C&N. The selection I enjoyed most is the last one in your set, a danceworthy pop song with a sense of humor, “My Life Would Suck Without You” by Kelly Clarkson.

Once again happy birthday to your BIL. He’ll soon be as old as Shady! 🙂 I enjoyed Mel Blanc’s novelty ditty inspired by Tweety & Sylvester, one of the Looney Tunes and Merrie Melodies cartoon series produced the Warner Brothers.

Enjoy the rest of your weekend, Cathy, and stop over and ride the Shady Train with me if you get time. Have a wonderful week, dear friend!

  • Mary B

This was a tough one! But… I managed to put my spin on it and came up with a half-decent post. Can’t wait to share it on Monday 🙂

    • Cathy Kennedy

      Mary,

I was grasping at straws to come up with something different. I hope I didn’t drive you nuts coming up with a playlist. I’m eager to hear your selections which I’m certain are staller picks! 🙂
