Thursday Art Date

Far Away TAD

iPhone 13 Pro capture

Rain’s prompt this week is “Far Away”.  The furthest away from home we’ve been is Lubec, Maine roughly 1268-1372 miles. We were there in 2022. I shared photos in my Maine travelogue series here. In terms of what to for this art suggestion, ideas bounced around in my head when a light went on, I guess someone is home after all, and I remembered a pencil sketch I did for TAD in 2019 that not only needed color added but is an excellent drawing to use for the prompt.

Thinking about “far away”, I think of drawing landscapes or an object that gives the illusion of distance.  I remember having a lesson on this in school and I really need to revisit art lessons lost over the years.  I did a quick Internet search and was reminded the farther away something is from you, the lighter the color appears to the eye because of the atmosphere layers, like as seen below in my photographic taken last fall.

I need to doodle simple landscape scenes that leads the eye to the horizon capturing the various shades and distance. Art is a process. I’m always experimenting and learning daily.

What’s been cookin’ on this end.  I made a big kettle of beef stew following closely Miz Helen’s Kitchen Grandma’s Irish Stew recipe. One of the ingredients is either 12 ounce Irish Stout Beer or Cola.  We don’t drink and while we’ll occasionally drink soda, I didn’t have any cola. As far as I can tell the absence of these didn’t make any difference. The stew turned out terrific!

This past Friday, I made a homemade three meat (Italian sausage, pepperoni, and Canadian ham) pizza.  I still use the same pizza crust and pizza sauce recipes I discovered in 2020.  I shared the recipes in this post.  Sometimes, I’ll throw in a some garlic powder or Italian seasonings to my pizza dough mix jazzing the crust up but it’s good without it. I tossed in two tablespoons of Italian seasonings this time. I always brush generously the edge of my pizza when it first comes out of the oven with oil (I use Avocado oil) and sprinkle garlic powder and garlic salt on top of the oil for added flavor.  It’s really yummy, too! Once you get the basics down, you can put any of your favorite toppings on your pizza pie and it’ll the best you’ve ever had! This upcoming weekend I plan to make Italian sausage and onion pizza. 😋

A big thankful I have is DD#2’s day procedure (last Friday) went well.  She’s really sore but home healing and resting when she can.  We wanted to make the trip to Maine but due to my dental issue we didn’t want to risk being so far from home. In the end, I believe everything worked out as it was meant to.  The trip would’ve been a very short one and logging 2000 miles would’ve knocked us off our feet not only figuratively but literally.  Also, it kept DD#2 from pushing herself after her surgery, which she would’ve and we wouldn’t want her to have a set back. God’s way is always the best! I’m thankful for spring-like temperatures we’re having this week. I know it won’t be around long but I’ll enjoy the ride while it lasts!

If you’re looking for last week’s BOTB outcome, I shared that earlier this morning. You’ll find a link in my side menu under Current Headline News. Alrighty, that’s it for now.

Next time on CAAC is Monday’s Music Moves Me. You’ll find me boogieing to love songs, breakup songs or a combination of both for next week’s music theme. Invite a friend and come join the party! X💋X💋 Cathy

Poor Marvin Martin is home sick. He is for sure far away …
Your mountain picture is beautiful and I think a painting of it would be awesome, though challenging 🙂 You always have things to be thankful for and for your daughters successful surgery, it is for sure a wonderful thing. Loved your music too … I would love to join you on Mondays, but, as you can see, I struggle to get my comments done from last Thursday. Time is not my friend. I always leave your post with a smile … you are the most Up person I know. Stay happy, Cathy …

Cathy the photo of the Smoky’s is stunning. I sure do miss living in Quebec FOR ONE REASON ONLY lol…the Appalachian mountains were big and beautiful! I’m in the Acadian mountains now and they are a little less majestic, though I’m not complaining! ☺ I love that you included Marvin the Martian, but he looks so sad doesn’t he? “Silly Earthlings…” ☺☺

  • Birgit

Love your drawing with Marvin the Martian waiting for his earth shattering kaboom! I’m glad your daughter is recovering and good sense to not travel right now. The furthest I’ve been would probably be Hungary way back in 1982 and, yes, under communist rule. My mom was having a huge fit thinking I will be 5ake n away by the Russians but she was here, in Canada and I was in Graz, Austria. I was on a tour us with a bunch of other people and it was good. It was an eye opener with the dreaded communist rule and how everything operated. You knew they were watching you and you had to be careful. When returning, by bus, we had to stop in No Man’s land while they searched the bus with German Shepherds and the guard towers with the men and their rifles will never be forgotten. We are very lucky where we live.

      Birgit,

Your experience in Hungary sounds scary. I’m a big chicken when it comes to travel so you probably won’t find me ever that far away from home. People have no idea what it’s like to live in other parts of the world. We think Communist rule in far away countries but sadly I fear this is the direction of our country. We think it can’t happen but it can. That’s what they want. They want to have us under their authority. Thanks for visiting, my dear!

We went to Lubec back in 2007 on our coast-to-coast trip. I remember it being a very foggy day, but despite that I liked it up there (I like fog anyway). Maine is so beautiful. The description of your pizza sounds delicious, I will remember to brush the edge with oil when it comes out of the oven, that is a good idea. Thank you for sharing!

We were in Lubec in 1997 and the weather was such a contrast to this day. It started off kind of cloudy, then it began to hail on us as we were walking back from the beach about the time we got beside West Quoddy light and the foggy siren went off. Boy, was that thing loud! Just as quick as the clouds and hail came in, so was its passing leaving sunny skies afterwards. Very strange weather! lol

Ohhh this is such a wonderful post. I love your are and wish you showed more of it. You are so talented. Glad the day procedure went well. Ohhhhh pizza!!!!? yeahhhh any day of the week. LOL I know time is short for all of us but I do encourage and invite you to FFO. I would love to see your art. Ya know, any type of face from anywhere. Have the very best day today.

      Nicole,

I will try this Friday to contribute something to FFO. I keep thinking about this all the time but just haven’t gotten around to it. Thanks for visiting!

Your Maine travelogues were lovely and your cute sketch made me smile, as I remember that cartoon character. 🙂 Thanks for the art/photography lesson! You really know your stuff. 👌 Beef stew sounds delicious! Haven’t had that in a while… Wishing your DD#2 a speedy recovery. That would have been an exhausting trip, for sure! Hurray for spring-like weather! We are enjoying the same, here. Have a good weekend, Cathy. ☀️

      Debbie,

Soups and chilly are excellent for cold winter days! You’re right the whirlwind trip to Maine would’ve been exhausting. I’m pooped this morning. We watched the Super Bowl and then my sleep quality wasn’t the best. Maybe, we can get in bed a little earlier tonight. Thanks for dropping in for a visit, my dear!

    Hi, Cathy!

I’m officially returning to blogland next Monday, dear friend, but popping in to see you today at CAAC because I’ve been missing you something terrible.

Yessum, I have fond memories of your trip to Maine and the many excellent pictures and videos you shared in the subsequent series. I didn’t know DD2 was having surgery, and I’m happy to know it went well. I agree that she probably would have overexerted herself playing hostess if you and DH had driven back up there to visit during her recovery. It would have been hard on you as well as on her.

I wish I could have tasted your beef stew and your homemade meat lovers pizza. I will show Mrs. Shady the recipes. I wish Mrs. Shady, her son and I had picked a clear day to visit Clingman Dome. It was steamy and hazy when we were there and we couldn’t see far. You guys enjoyed a much nicer view of the mountains off in the distance. I’ve been appreciating the mewsic of Breaking Benjamin for years now and liked the song “Far Away” which fits this week’s theme for your Art Date With Rain.

Have a safe and happy weekend, dear friend Cathy, and come see me at Shady’s Place if you can next Monday, Tuesday or Wednesday!

    • Cathy Kennedy

      Tom,

I sort of disappeared from the net for a few days and am now playing catch up. Your words, visits, and friendship are always such a comfort. 🙂

I hope Mrs. Shady likes the recipes. The views from Clingmans’ Dome is anyone’s guess on any given day. We had a good day when were there last November. If I were a first time visitor and I couldn’t see the view then I’d be disappointed but living here I love the moodiness that comes at that elevation sometimes.

Thanks for dropping by. I’m heading over to your place right now!

Your Lubec photo – easternmost town – reminded me of a photo of us at the southernmost point in Key West, FL.
And Marvin the Martian is my favorite Loony Tunes character. Wait. Is Speedy Gonzales a Loony Tunes character? Yosemite Sam? Taz? Hmmm.
    Dug the music video! ~Ed.

    • Cathy Kennedy

      Ed,

Although, I’m not a huge fan of Floria it would be neat to visit the southmost point…in the winter. 🙂 I hate the heat! To answer your question, yes Speedy, Yosemite, and Taz are Looney Tunes. One year for the April A to Z challenge I sketched quite a number of them. That was a lot of fun! Thanks for visiting. I hop over to your place soon!
