Monday's Music Moves Me

Eurovision Song Contest

Awww Mondays hosted by Sandee from Comedy Plus.

For John’s final theme week for this month on the Monday’s Mewsic Moves Me, he’s asking us to pay tribute in song to the 65th anniversary of the Eurovision Song Contest.  You’ll find all the winners here from 1956-2019.  I was surprised by the handful of singers I knew by name Lulu (1969), ABBA (1974), Bucks Fizz (1981), Celine Dion (1988), & Katrina and the Waves (1997).   I’m sure there are others I’ll discover that I know when I sample their music but today I’m going to feature the winner of the 1976 Eurovision contest with Save Your Kisses For Me.  A band I feel like I’ve heard and yet I can’t say with complete certainty.  Hit play to sample tunes by Brotherhood of Man!

Brotherhood of Man ’76 Winner playlist tracks:  1. Save Your Kisses For Me  2. Angelo  3.  United We Stand  4. Figaro  5. Oh Boy (The Mood I’m In)  6.  My Sweet Rosalie  7.  Heartbreaker  8. Middle Of The Night  9. People Over The World  10. Beautiful Lover

This month’s honorary co-hostess is John from The Sound of One Hand Typing

❤️🎵❤️🎵❤️🎵❤️🎵❤️🎵❤️🎵

This is a mewsic linky party. Every other week we have a suggested mewsic theme (see side menu) to build your song set around and all participants share YouTube or Vimeo videos for our mewsic enthusiasts.  Failure to meet this basic guideline puts your URL in danger of being removed or labeled – NO MUSIC.

I hope you enjoyed Brotherhood of Man.  Do you remember this band?  If so, what songs other than what’s on today’s line up come to mind?  With the approach of summer in clear sight, this means Internet traffic will practically grind to a halt and I may slip into my summer blogging routine to post once a week. I’ll give you the heads up when I know what my plans are, though.  Meanwhile, that’s a wrap. Have a boogietastic week!  X💋X💋, Cathy

      Hey Binky,

I’m so happy you joined us on the dance floor this week, little furriend! “Save Your Kisses for Me” is a delightful, happy song.

  • Alana Mautone

Great minds – we both used “Save Your Kisses for Me” That and United we Stand are the two songs I knew. I thought Angelo sounded so much like ABBA (with different voices, but similar musical style) and then I saw Thomas Anderson’s comment so great minds again! The look of the group should be the dictionary definition of “70’s”. “Angelo” was my favorite although the lyrics of “People All Over the World” touched me so.

    • Cathy Kennedy

      Alana,

Yes BoM sounds quite a bit like ABBA with “Angelo”. I noticed we picked the same song “Save Your Kisses for Me”. I believe another person on the dance floor did, but I can’t remember who. My brain is shot! 😀

  • John Holton

I had “United We Stand.” At the time, the group as pretty much whoever was there: Tony Burrows, who I wrote about on Sunday, was the male lead on “UWS.” That changed in ’72, and Things looked up for them. I think they’re still together in some form. I enjoyed them.

Nice selection of songs! I think this worked out well. I’ve enjoyed being the “co-hostess” this month (ahem). When am I doing this again? You used to have the list and I can’t find it…

You did a fabulous job this month, John. As you already know the next time you’re scheduled to fill in is in October. It’ll be here before we can blink an eye. Thanks for stopping by. I’ll have to check out your Sunday post.

Eurovision gifted me a artist that has appeared more than once on my M10- Australia’s Dami Im. I liked that rowdy winner from Italy this weekend!

We have never watched the show. I’m sure it’s available for streaming somewhere but have yet to look into it. I’ll have to check out the newest winner.

Your photo and the quote made me smile and giggle! Thanks! Have a super week!

      Ellen,

Yes, indeed warm feet are VERY important. Sometimes when we run the air conditioning I have to put socks on because my toes get so cold.

  • Sandee

I’ve had many Mondays just like that. Cute and it made me laugh out loud. Thank you for that.

Love the video. I just don’t remember them at all. I like them very much though.

Thank you for joining the Awww Mondays Blog Hop.

Have a fabulous Awww Monday and week, Cathy. Love and hugs, my friend. ♥

I so enjoyed listening to all these songs by a group I don’t know about. It’s funny how a group can be famous in other countries or all over the world but if they don’t make it in North America, we think they are not big. They do remind me of ABBA with the beautiful harmonies they have.

  • Thomas Anderson

    Hi, Cathy!

Happy Awww-some 4M Monday, dear friend! I hope you and DH had a nice weekend.

That awww-some meme seems to be implying that the polar bear couldn’t hold his liquor. 🙂

I well remember Brotherhood Of Man, an English pop group founded in 1969 by song scribe and record producer Tony Hiller. For the first three years, the group featured a revolving door of session singers. It was during this period that they recorded my favorite song of theirs, their second single and first international hit “United We Stand.” Released in early 1970, “United We Stand” made a run at the top 10 on the U.S. chart and cracked the top 10 in Canada. I liked the song because it captured the spirit of the Woodstock era and reminded me of The Mamas And The Papas. I had that 45 in my collection. In 1972, Hiller decided to reinvent Brotherhood Of Man with a permanent four-member lineup and a decidedly lighter pop sound similar to Tony Orlando And Dawn, the American group that scored hits in the early 70s with “Candida,” “Knock Three Times” and “Tie A Yellow Ribbon.” In the years that followed, Brotherhood Of Man grew in popularity, had a string of hits and won the 1976 Eurovision Song Contest with “Save Your Kisses For Me.” I remember the ditty, but it is much too lightweight, much too “Lawrence Welk friendly” for my taste, In my comment on your Saturday post, I predicted that ABBA would appear in today’s 4M post. I see that you mentioned ABBA’s 1974 Eurovision win. I just wanted to let you know that I bought a copy of ABBA’s “Waterloo,” the winning song, and played it many times that year along with the psychedelic rock-oriented flip side “Watch Out!” I never heard Brotherhood Of Man’s hits “Angelo” or “Figaro” before, but I like them both, primarily because they remind me so much of ABBA. I read that both those songs were criticized for being imitations of the ABBA hit “Fernando.” B.O.M. also sounds a lot like ABBA on “Oh Boy,” “Heartbreaker,” “Middle Of The Night” and “Beautiful Lover.” So be it. I love ABBA and appreciate a good soundalike effort.

Thank you for the mewsic and memories, dear friend Cathy, and have a wonderful week!

      Tom,

It’s great seeing you on the dance floor! I love ABBA but I felt they’d get a lot of use in today’s lineup, so I decided to go with someone I thought I should know but didn’t. I have at least one of ABBA’s CDs. It might be one of their greatest hits because many of the song titles you mentioned are on it. I really hated when the band broke up. They were super together and could’ve gone along with but when personal and business lives entwine then it can make things more volatile. I hope you weren’t too disappointed with my musical lineup. 🙂 Have a boogietastic week, my friend!

      • Thomas Anderson

Hi again, Cathy! No, dear friend, I am not at all disappointed that you shined the spotlight on Brotherhood Of Man. Please allow me to clarify. I was 20 minutes into writing my comment when I accidentally backed off your page and lost everything. I needed to start over from scratch and, in my haste to compose a second comment, perhaps I wasn’t as careful with the wording as I should have been. I didn’t mean to convey the idea that I was disappointed with the post. To the contrary, I like the fact that you featured B.O.M. instead of ABBA because ABBA gets too much exposure as it is and B.O.M. is seldom mentioned in mewsic history. Moreover there are only three B.O.M. songs that I didn’t care as much for, but I very much enjoyed the rest, with “United We Stand” being my favorite.

Thank you, dear friend, and have a tunetastic day!

        • Cathy Kennedy

          Tom,

I was hoping that you weren’t disappointed and that you enjoyed the flashback. “United We Stand” as a familiarity to it as does a few of their other song titles but I think you hit on something that I didn’t mention and that is some of their songs have that ABBA vibe. That’s probably one of the reasons why I really enjoyed listening to them. I’m heading over to your place. I’ve still dragging my feet in trying to stay on top of return visits. Once again, thanks for being apart of my morning!
