Wordless Wednesday

‘Eric’ in living color

A few months back I made the decision to incorporate my artwork into my mid-week not-so-Wordless Wednesday time slot.  Now that the A to Z Challenge is over, I can bring to you last month’s pencil drawings to life with color.

For the past two years, I’ve contributed art sketches and kept with the theme, except I focused on illustrating characters from The Little Mermaid animated movies and TV series with you.  My goal was to provide not only pencil sketches but adding color to my pictures. Unfortunately, I ran short on time and as promised I am ready to share my designs in living color!

Today, I’m sharing Prince Eric. You can take a peek at the original pencil drawing  here.  From the primary illustration, I used my Prismacolor pencils (highly recommend) to fill in the design and using the Procreate drawing app with my Apple pencil on my iPad I recreated a similar scene.

First, my Prismacolor fill illustration.  I always loved coloring but to get shading properly requires more practice and that’s what I plan to do in the coming days. 😉

Being the creative genius or nut whichever you label you wish to pin on me, I dabbled with my Pixelmator photo editor to apply some special effects.

Solarize – looks like comic print to me
Gloom – smooths colors casting a shadowy feel to the image

Do you like these special features?  They are different but I prefer my original.  Next up, is my Procreate drawing of the same illustration.

What I like about this digital sketch is how it almost looks like a painting.  Procreate offers a variety of tool technics to achieve different artistic results.

Do you have a preference for the colorized original illustration or the digital drawing of Eric?

For now, I’m not going to include a linky.  It’s discouraging when I host this and bloggers fail to leave a comment. That being said, if you want me or anyone else to hop over please leave your footprints (direct URL) to your site in comments.

Internet traffic is beginning to slow, Blogosphere all but empties out with the return of warm weather and honestly, I don’t blame anyone for seeking refuge outdoors with nature.  I have more than enough stuff on my plate to keep me busy and will try to keep to my three days a week posting but there will come a point when I will need to take a longer short break from things. Please join me for nothing but giggles with my Friday Fun Stuff edition!

    Hi Cathy :))
The “gloom” kind of looks like ceramic in a way! I like your Eric 🙂
I’ve been away for a while, our house-buying dream didn’t manifest, sigh…so we’re renting another year. I’m trying to get over that disappointment emotionally and get back to what I love – gardening, painting, drawing, blogging and spending time in the kitchen and outside! If only the weather would cooperate here!!! 🙂

      Rain,

I was just thinking about you the other day and wondered how you were doing. I had intended to visit but it felt like I’ve been going in several directions at once since the April blogfest ended. I’m sorry your house hunting didn’t pan out but that might work to your advantage later. It’s best to find what you want so you will be happy in the long run. I feel like we’re chasing a unicorn in our pursuit to get into a new place but I know it’s out there somewhere waiting for us to discover or maybe it’s just not on the market yet. We’ll find it, though. I like your approach to get back to what you enjoy for now. That’s a good idea. Thanks for dropping in!

      Eugenia,

It’s amazing what color can do, isn’t it? I love playing with both mediums – old & new school for colorizing my pencil drawings.

  • Birgit Bedesky

I love those pencils, they are so nice to colour with eh? I love all for various reasons-your coloured version is great and showcases how well you are doing with the shading. I love the next one because it is so bright especially his vivid blue pants. It’s always fun to experiment

Many thanks for taking a peek at my first edition in my A2Z spin-off ‘in living color’. I had fun with the do-over through Procreate. It’s such a cool app!

  • Sandee

He was handsome in pencil, but he’s more handsome in color. Very well done.

Thank you for joining the Wordless Wednesday Blog Hop.

Have a fabulous Wordless Wednesday. Love and hugs. ♥

Great sketches, Cathy! You’re becoming a real pro. 🙂 I liked all versions of Prince Eric. Yes, the warm weather beckons and there’s lots of yard work at the moment, so I’m skipping this week’s #WW link parties, but always enjoy visiting others, time permitting.

      Debbie,

We have yard work, too. The rain keeps us from doing it when we have time on the weekends. Usually the evenings, DH is dragging too badly to get much done and so am I. Getting up before the chickens makes for a long day. 🙂

I like the first and the last the best. It is nice to see the different things you can accomplish with a little color, isn’t it?

  • DrillerAA

Nicely done and I think I agree that the first one is my favorite. Proper shading has always been a challenge for me.

Not emptying out here, and as long as you continue to fish me out of the spam folder it’s all good! Heeheehee!

Excellent drawings, i also liked the original and the one at the end with the Apple pencil, all those effects can be cool but distracting. Happy Wednesday!

      Mimi,

I’ll definitely keep fishing you out of the Spam folder. You and Eugenia wind up there a lot which baffles me to no end. I can’t figure out with your hundreds of approved comments why WP keeps doing this. I may have to break down to ask why this is so. Thanks for visiting!

    Hi, Cathy!

Happy not-so-Wordless Wednesday In Living Color, dear friend!

It’s a joy to see Prince Eric pop in living color, and I enjoyed noting the different looks achieved with every technique you used on him. There is an art to “post-production” enhancement and you are obviously as gifted in this phase as you are when drawing the original sketches. I agree that the second effect, Solarize, makes the composition look like a comic book or comic strip illustration. I think my two favorites are the first, the Prismacolor fill illustration, and the last, Procreate, which is brighter and the colors more vivid, making it look like an oil painting. That one is suitable for framing and hanging on a wall.

Speaking of internet traffic slowing, I need to let you know that I will be taking a 2 to 3 week break from blogging starting in early June. Mrs. Shady and I will be doing some traveling. The same might happen at the start of August when we are planning another getaway.

Have a happy Wednesday and enjoy the rest of your week, dear friend Cathy!

      Tom,

Thanks for checking out my finished Prince Eric contribution from my #atozchallenge quest. 🙂

I’m glad to hear that you and Mrs. Shady are scheduling some vacation time in early June. That sounds wonderful and will be very much appreciated I know. Where are y’all going? I hope to hear all about it. I’m sure our getaways will be day trips to the mountains. We will have so many appointments with DH’s recent dental implant that’ll span over the next several months, maybe as long as a year before this will be behind us. I’m tired of these time-consuming procedures but it’s better than losing teeth. Have a great day.
