Monday's Music Moves Me

Dog Days of Summer – Mewsical tribute to past family pets

Awww Mondays hosted by Sandee at Comedy Plus

Welcome to Monday’s Mewsic Moves Me on Sunday!  It’s the first Monday, almost, of a new month which means we have a new honorary co-host. Let’s give a round of applauds to John from The Sound of One Hand Typing! 👏  Today’s theme, he suggests us to come up with  Songs about dogs (or any pets) in honor of the end of the Dog Days of summer.   Are you ready to dance?

I don’t have any pets but in honor, of the first pet, I remember my first song choice is the new2me tune by Black Joe Lewis & the Honeybears Sugarfoot because that was the name of my pup. I betcha money I named or maybe it was my daddy who named the little terrier after the old western TV series (1957-1961).

When DH & I were dating I found a stray orange tabby which I took home.  I blanked on giving my little fella a name, so I asked DH to help. He came with a good as any name ‘FRED Bear Jam’ (Ted Nugent).

After DH & I got married, I wanted a kitten.  He really didn’t want one but he got one for me.   I called around trying to find one until I finally found a pet store in the Sears at West Town Mall.  They had one kitten. When I asked how much, the purrson said, if you come to get it, you can have it. We can’t keep the thing in its cage because he’s so tiny and then it’s a chore to catch him. That’s all it took. We headed out and claimed our first furbaby.  At home later the same evening, we were cooing over the cute charcoal gray bundle of energy while he lapping up left-over gravy while we figured out his name when I said, why don’t we call him ‘Groovy GRAVY‘?

Unfortunately, Gravy’s life was short but we won’t talk about that. This is to be a happy post. Since we had good fortune getting a kitten at the pet store in Sears, we returned seeking another and while we didn’t find one quite so young, we did find a lovely calico, we name Christopher and the first mewsician that came to mind is the 80s chart-topper, Christopher Cross. Here’s a YouTube playlist featuring some of his best songs.

On behalf of the 4M crew, we’re so happy you joined our party today.

Please readthis is a mewsic linky party, which means all participates are sharing songs that one can listen to from YouTube or Vimeo and a not a post about mewsic or mewsicians.  Failure to meet this basic guideline puts your URL in danger of being removed or labeled – NO MUSIC

[tweetthis]Hit the #MondaysMusicMovesMe dance floor with me! @xmasdolly [/tweetthis]

ATTENTION!!! Would you like to be next month’s honorary co-host? If so, then leave a comment or send your request by email!

Love that you named your pets after songs – when I met my hubby, he had 5 cats all named after songs or artists (don’t ask me to remember what they all were, it’s been too long! LOL!!) Loved the tunes – it’s been a minute since I’ve heard any Christopher Cross! 🙂 Hope you’re having a fabulous weekend – and hope your hubby’s surgery went well, and his recovery is speedy! <3

      Stacy,

Oh, that’s cool that your husband named his cats after mewsicians or songs. I didn’t name my pets after either. I just found songs bearing their names in part to create my playlist. 🙂 Thanks for boogieing with me, my dear!

    • Cathy Kennedy

      Paul,

We no longer have a pet. Our last one was Christopher who we had to give to a dear friend and cat lover because of our allergies. Pets are an enormous responsibility. I like animals but at this stage I’m not sure even if we didn’t have any allergies if we’d want to worry with the demands placed on us by sweet furbabies. Thanks for visiting.

  • Gilly

My friend has a little dog named Marley after Bob Marley. Thanks for the playlist – haven’t heard Christopher Cross for years – will enjoy this. Apologies for being AWOL – will endeavour to catch up!

    • Cathy Kennedy

Gilly dear, no need to worry about going MIA in Blogosphere. As long as nothing is seriously wrong then that’s all that matters and it’s good to step away sometimes. Thanks for stopping in for a dance.

      Chris,

I remember when CDs came out. That was the rage. Although the digital world is huge, there’s a steady group of folks who prefer old school media. All of our vinyls were kept at my late in-laws and when my father-in-law passed our possessions were in a horrible condition to retrieve. Not that we could’ve brought everything home but it sure would’ve been nice to have the change to filter through the stuff we couldn’t locate. Thanks for dropping by to hit the dance floor. It’s bedtime now but I’ll hop over to your place first thing in tomorrow morning. 🙂

I love cats. Sometimes I like them more than I like people. I once named a cat after a character in “Cats”. So the fact that you name yours after songs seems normal to me. Nice playlist.

    • Cathy Kennedy

      Robin,

I’ve somehow given the impression that I named my kitties after songs or mewsicians but I didn’t. I just found some interesting song titles that matched up well with my beloved late pets. I get why you might like cats more than people sometimes. There are too many mean humans in the world. Everyone thinks you have to legislate morals but the only way for bad things to stop is if these evil people have a change of heart. Thanks for stopping by to boogie with me, dearie!

When I was a little girl, we had a dog. But he managed to run away every time we went on a trip. I remember begging my parents for a cat. I didn’t get one until I was a teenager. That cat disappeared as soon as I left for college. When I met my husband, he had a cat. That cat did not think he was a cat. When we divorced, my ex took his cat with him when he left. I like both cats and dogs, but cats have a special place in my heart. Great tunes today!

    • Cathy Kennedy

      Mary,

I’m sorry I’m just now seeing your comment. It somehow got buried or my brain was rushing to fast to keep up. lol At least you had an opportunity to have both a dog and a cat. While I miss having pets, I don’t think I’m ready to deal with the responsibility of them today. It’s a lot of work. Thanks for dancing with me, my dear!

  • angelswhisper2011

We loved this post, CK, I think it’s very original to name your pets after a sweet song. Granny named her doggie after her favourite sweets, her name was Droppie = licorice that was the most original she could find…MOL 😀 We like Christopher Cross, some great songs on his name 🙂 Thanks for the music, my furriend. Pawkisses for a wonderful week ahead to all of you🐾😽💞

    • Cathy Kennedy

      Binky,

Actually, I didn’t name my pets after songs, I just found songs to work for today’s theme. You’re such a cutie. Thanks for dancing with me.

  • John Holton

I don’t think pop radio has room for the likes of Christopher Cross anymore. I feel bad for him: he didn’t have the looks for MTV and his soundwas too gentle for today’s radio. Oh well, he’s still going, anyway…

  • Cathy Keisha

What a great idea to pick songs your pets were named after. Only one of the cats here was named after a song and that was Wendell Cee named after an REM song which was actually “Wendell Dee.” I wasn’t named after a song. I was named cos Gramma always wanted a girl to name Cathy and never got one and Keisha was cos I was found in a mostly black ‘hood so it’s my roots. Enjoy the week.

  • Sandee

Awww on the puppy and kitty. So adorable.

I’m glad you got your kitty and I’m happy you left it at that. Happy day today.

I love Christopher. Listened to him often.

Thank you for joining the Awww Mondays Blog Hop.

Have a fabulous Awww Monday, my friend. Love and hugs. ♥

I focused on summer this week. I suppose I could have given a nod to my cocker spaniel, Lucy, by posting “Lucy in the Sky With Diamonds”, or used the more formal name “Lucille”. Of course I could have paid tribute to my pup and referring to B.B. Kings guitar of the same name and played one of his tunes. Of course there is always Kenny Rogers, “You Picked a Fine Time to Leave Me Lucille”. Opportunities lost. Chris Cross is one of those artists that enjoyed great success in his day, but we don’t hear much of his music being played to day and that is most unfortunate.

  • XmasDolly

I wonder sometimes how you find all these wonderful things to talk about much less the beautiful music you always post. I had a wonderful time here at your place. Sailing is such a beautiful song don’t you think? Well, it’s getting pretty late here. I think I’ll hit the hay so I can get a fresh start in the a.m. Goodnight sweetie! HUGS

    • Cathy Kennedy

      Mike,

Thanks for joining me on the dance floor! Christopher Cross was a great favorite from back in his heydays, so it was great fun listening to many of his hits. I’ll boogie over to catch what you’re playing on your jukebox!

  • Alana Mautone (@RamblinGarden)

This is a playlist I needed today, and it’s funny, there are a couple of songs here I never realized were Christopher Cross’s (such as Ride Like the Wind). This is one to enjoy at leisure for sure. “Sailing” is such a favorite of mine, especially.

    • Cathy Kennedy

      Alana,

Christopher Cross was so popular in the 80s & 90s. His easy sounding melodies really can soothe a purrson’s mind. Since it’s been forever since I’d heard anything new from him, I checked out his mewsic on his website. His last studio album, Take Me As I Am was in 2017 which I’m listening to right now. It sounds very much like the mewsic that I loved by him from 30 years ago. If you like his style then check it out!

  • Birgit

I am so glad you got that kitty and even though his life was short, he had a life filled with love and that’s what counts. I like Christopher Cross and this was fun to listen to. I have had so many animals and when I was growing up in the country, we got all our animals as strays because people dumped them. One was Fox who actually looked like a coyote. She was so intelligent that we could play tag with her. She would come to us when we were sad to make us feel better. I would have to think of a song that makes one feel better and, right now, I can’t think of one. My Katie girl was goofy and sweet and Who Let The Dogs out was the first one that popped into my head. Our Wallace-is phobic of the outside and so I can’t help but think of that Pink Floyd song about paranoia…the title escapes me. I hope you are having. Great summer and time away from blogland. Enjoy every moment and smell the flowers.🌺

    • Cathy Kennedy

      Birgit,

We sure did love Gravy. He was the sweetest little thing. The closest thing to a pet we have now is a little rabbit that feeds in our yard. Sometimes he’ll stay around for a long time while we’re outdoors. He seems to tolerate our presence okay until his nerves get the better of him before jumping off. I’m not really familiar with Pink Floyd’s mewsic, so I asked Google. He has a song called “Paranoid Eyes”, is that the one you’re thinking about? You had a fox as a pet? That’s so cool! Isn’t it neat how animals can sense our mood or health and can make you feel better? Thanks for sharing with me some of your pet stories and boogieing with me, my friend!

    • Cathy Kennedy

      Jacqui,

I’m happy to have the memories that I do especially since we don’t have any pets now. With our allergies then we probably never will again. 🙁 Thanks for boogieing with me!

    • Cathy Kennedy

      Eugenia,

Yep, I’m enjoying my summer even if it isn’t anything exciting. It’s just good to have a little break from my normal routine. Things will fall back into place soon enough. Thanks for dropping by!

    • Cathy Kennedy

      Brian,

Pets are an important part of our lives. They bring a lot of happiness to others and while we don’t have any now, I’m still drawn to them from afar. Thanks for stopping by to dance with me. 🙂

    • Cathy Kennedy

      Ramona,

Gravy was a cute little ball of fluff and energy. It was heartbreaking when his little life got snuffed out too soon but he’ll never be forgotten. Thanks for boogieing with me!

  • Thomas Anderson

    Hi, Cathy!

It’s good to be joining you for your latest installment of 4M Monday on Sunday, dear friend! My sleepy eyes and ears were opened in a very good way by Black Joe Lewis & the Honeybears, a funk and soul band influenced by Howlin’ Wolf and James Brown. Joe’s gritty singing and his funky horn band bring to mind, not only Brown, but also Wilson Pickett, Joe Tex, Sam & Dave and other funky R&B greats. I love his sound! I am sure you’re right that you or your dad named your childhood puppy after Sugarfoot, the title character of the TV Western series. As a boy I watched every episode of Sugarfoot. The show revolved in its time slot with two other great Westerns – Cheyenne and Bronco. Ty Hardin (Bronco) died two years ago yesterday at age 87. Clint Walker (Cheyenne) died last year a few days shy of his 91st birthday. Sugarfoot (Will Hutchins) is still with us at age 89. I enjoyed listening to the theme song from Sugarfoot. I haven’t heard it since the series left the air in 1961.

If you have pictures of Sugarfoot, Fred, your orange tabby cat, Gravy, your purrfect little kitten or Christopher the calico, I hope you will post them someday. It’s a cute story how you acquired and named Gravy, and I was thrilled to listen to that cookin’ instrumental jam “Groovy Gravy” by Quincy Jones & Bill Cosby. I am very sorry Gravy’s little life was cut short. I take it Christopher was blessed with a longer life. I am familiar with soft rocker Christopher Cross. A couple of years ago I obtained on a dance-pop CD a stupendous version of “Ride Like The Wind” – the Joey Negro Extended Disco Mix. Listening to it is nine minutes in heaven.

I hope you and DH are enjoying your summer and I wish you a safe and happy week ahead, dear friend Cathy!

    • Cathy Kennedy

      Tom,

I had forgotten about Clint Walker passing. He had a long life. The only pictures of any pet I have would be Christopher but those I took with slide film and I don’t have any prints. I have a scanner but never got around to scanning them and I can’t get it to work with our Apple computers because there aren’t any available drivers. I can’t believe Canon stopped supporting their product. Maybe, someday I can get our old Windows-based computer going again. It hasn’t been started up in a long time and it needs serious updating. I guess I need to turn this into one of my all-day projects and then try to get my scanner working again on our Dell workstation. That all being said if I manage to get those images moved to digital then I’d love to share them! Our summer is going okay. It’s not nearly as exciting as we’d like for it to be with doctor appointments and chores but we’ll survive. I’m happy to just spend time with him makes no difference to me what we’re doing as long as we’re together. 🙂 Thanks for joining me on the dance floor, my friend. You’re the best!
