Nylons? Stockings? Garter belts?  These conjure images of sultry babes from the by-gone era of silver screen starlets such as Betty Grable pictured to the left was known for her gorgeous legs.  Most of us, never had to wear garter belts when we started wearing silky stockings to cover our bare legs unless we wanted to….ahem… entertain our husbands. Pantyhose is a marvel for most gals for giving our legs the polished edge of sophistication.

Did you know ladies nylons are relatively new?  I mean, this invention hasn’t even been around even a 100-years yet.  The 1939 New York’s World Fair  introduced the silky stockings.  By May 1940, nylon stockings were on the scene, which made them more affordable.  By the end of the year, 64 million pairs of nylons sold. These earlier stockings were hand-sewn and size oriented, but lycra fabric developed in the late 50s and this new material gave stockings more stretch and flexibility, eliminating the need for specific sizing.  Thus, a  new off-shoot of the stocking was born and what we are commonly familiar with today, pantyhoses.

For years, I wore pantyhoses to camouflage my legs in the workforce, at church, going to dinner, etcetera.  The most unpleasant part was sporting them in the summer months.  It was simply too hot to wear them and if the truth made known, stockings ofter little warmth in the winter months.  Several years ago, I decided to shed this burden and stopped wearing nylons altogether.  Surprising, I found my pale legs to not be an eye-sore.  In fact, my husband loves the beauty of my natural bare legs.  Bare it all? Not hardly, but it sure does feel liberating!
