All Things Christmas ‘Food’ Song Picks + Dec. 1st #BoTB Results

Hop over to see Sandee for more Awww Mondays fun-spiration!

Good morning, Kittens and Dawgs! It’s fabulous to see you! Are you ready to groove to some mewsic?  It’s the second week of December and this month our theme is ‘All Things Christmas‘.  Being the kind of gal that I am always trying to think of a theme within a theme.  Today feature mewsic comprises of food inspired tunes.  The list is extensive and you’re welcome to listen to it without any interruption or skip around.

Many of the songs in my playlist need no explanation but for some you may not recall the specific food the song reference.  I know I wouldn’t have thought of the songs had I not had Google’s help. I’ll list the song in order of my playlist with a brief description.

  1. It’s Beginning to Look A Lot Like Christmas   …with candy canes and silver lanes aglow
  2. Grandma Got Run Over By a Reindeer She’d been drinking too much eggnog
  3. The Wassail Song   I had no clue what this song was refering to until I read one Google source mentioned that wassail is spiced cider (my recipe).
  4. A Marshmallow World   Have you ever made home-made marshmallows? It’s really quite simple and yummy. Check out my Peppermint Marshmallow recipe!
  5. Christmas Cookies   I love to bake at Christmas! My favorite cookies to make are sugar (various shapes), gingerbread (boys, girls, and houses, and shortbread.
  6. The Christmas Song (Chestnuts Roasting on An Open Fire)  Years ago, I tried roasting chestnuts in the oven.  I can’t remember how that turned out but I love the idea of roasting chestnuts
  7. Let It Snowbrought some corn for popping
  8. We Wish You A Merry Christmas  bring us some figgy pudding. Have you ever eaten figgy pudding?  I have not but Chowhound suggested this recipe.
  9. Over the River and Through the Woods Hurrah for fun; the pudding’s done, Hurrah for pumpkin pieTraditionally we do not have pumpkin pie for Christmas.  I tend to associate the song and dessert with Thanksgiving but I know many think of Christmas.
  10. The 12 Days of Christmas you need to think a little out of the box the lyrics refer to a partridge in a pear tree (Partridge with Pear recipe), two turtle doves (9 Mouthwatering Dove recipes), three French Hens (Cornish Hen recipe), four Colly birds (blackbirds, recipe for Blackbird Pie), six geese-a-laying (How to Roast a Goose and Goose Egg Custard), eight maids-a-milking (milk…Eggnog or My Boiled Custard recipe)
  11. You’re a Mean One, Mr. Grinch lyrics refer to Mr. Grinch as a bad banana and garlic in his soul.  When the kids were home I kept bananas on hand.  DH is allergic to them so I don’t buy them often anymore.  However, whenever my bananas went bad, I made Banana Nut Bread. 🙂  I haven’t made Chex Party Mix for Christmas and that recipe calls for garlic powder.
  12. (There’s No Place Like)Home For the Holiday …I met a man who lives in Tennessee, and he was headin’ for Pennsylvania and some homemade pumpkin pie. Again, another song mentioning a dessert I commonly link to Thanksgiving.  I may as well share my recipe with you.
  13. Holly Jolly Christmas  …a cup of cheer.  I always thought a cup of cheer meant an alcoholic drink and while some of these drinks (5 Classic Holiday Drinks ) do have alcohol they certain can be enjoyed virgin style.
  14. Christmas in Hollis I don’t like rap mewsic but this song is an exception and is actually quite fun.  The song clearly mentions Mom’s cooking chicken and collard greens, Rice and stuffing, macaroni and cheeseThis definitely sounds like some good eats to me.  I can chicken just about any time of the year, especially if it’s fried. 🙂  I’ll pass on the collard greens, though.  That’s one green vegetable that always tastes too bitter for my taste buds.
  15. Sleigh Ride This song mentions…The chestnuts pop; Pop! Pop! Pop and When they pass around the coffee And the pumpkin pie.   What’s not to like about hot coffee and pie?  Sounds like the purrrfect combination to end a meal with, eh?  Of course, I always like making homemade Peppermint Lattes at Christmas.
  16. Nutcracker Suite I went uptempo on Tchaikovsky Christmas classic.  The song itself represents may flavors of the holiday – chocolate, coffee, tea, candy canes, marzipan, and ginger.  However, the one thing that always comes to mind when you think of The Nutcracker are the Sugarplums.  While I have not made this recipe, it’s certainly worth a try.  I’d have to leave out the honey since DH is sensitive to it.  Once many years ago I found a truffle recipe referred to as sugarplums.  I made it and it was good but the truffles weren’t quite as firm as store-bought ones.
  17. We Need A Little Christmas  The season wouldn’t be complete without …Slice up the fruitcake… as mentioned in this song.  In years past I’ve made home-made fruitcake and we always buy a Benson’s fruitcake but what I really enjoy making is home-made stollen. Basically, it’s a german pastry that’s kinda like a fruitcake.  Overall I like a stollen better than a fruitcake but I won’t pass on a good fruitcake.

Please join my fellow co-hosts: XmasDolly (Party Coordinator), StacyAlana, Colette (taking semi-blog hiatus due to eye issues), and little ole me onto the dance floor (ONLY link mewsic posts) below.

It’s time to tell announce the winner of Julie London ‘Warm in December’ #BoTB Showdown with Clare Teal & Seth MacFarlane.  Everyone seemed to enjoy both contenders’ cover but it was Clare who stole the show and knocking good ole Seth off center stage with a 9 to 3 victory!

Here’s another song from Clare’s 2013 Christmas album, That’s What I Want For Christmas!

DH & I are taking a bit of staycation.  Blogging life will resume later in the week and while I’ve tried touching base in Blogosphere while away, I haven’t had near the opportunities.  I’d like to say we’ve been having big ole time but we found ourselves in need of a new car just before our vacation started. We got one thank the good Lord and I share spill the details of this craziness next week. Meanwhile, keep those tunes playing, your body swaying, and I’ll be boogieing over to see you soon.

Love the food theme, and I have to tell you, you gave me a little bit of inspiration for my Dec 17 post. It’s been so many years since I’ve heard the Johnny Mathis song. Karen Carpenter – she makes me so wistful – such a great talent gone way too soon. The Grinch – you forgot the eel – but don’t try out arsenic sauce. I love eggnog; years ago when we had chickens hubbie used to make homemade eggnog – we trusted that our eggs wouldn’t make us sick and they never did. Hope, despite the dying car episode, that your staycation was enjoyable (merry and bright).

I love all your Christmas tunes, Cathy, and I love that you did a theme within a theme – I was grinning from ear to ear at all the food references. 🙂 Thanks for the festive dance! Hope you’re having a great week! 🙂

      Mary,

One of the first things I think about with Christmas in mind is the food from what goodies I plan to make to all the dinner preparations. The flavors of Christmas really makes the season festive and cozy. There’s a lot of memories assorted with past Christmas dinners. Thanks for sharing the dance floor with me, my friend!

  • XmasDolly

Oh my gosh, PERRY COMO!!! One of my mama’s favorites!!! She loved to watch his show along with Dean Martin’s & naturally Lawrence Welk! ~hehehe~ Yeah, I’m sure Gramma’s song is up for “not politically correct” as is “Oooo Baby it’s cold outside”! I think that’s horrible & people should find something better to do with their time!!! Don’t you agree? grrrrrrrrr Don’t get me started!!! HUGS… HEHEHEHE!!! My favorite among your bunch is The Wassail Song because you just don’t always here it and with my maiden name being Chamberlin & Grandpa was from London, England in the Shanty part of town… he sung that song a lot at Christmas time… well, that’s what he use to tell us kids. ~hehe~ Luv your pickins’ my friend & MERRY CHRISTMAS….. ho… ho…. ho….

    • Cathy Kennedy

      Marie,

Who cares about ‘political correctness’? Not me! 😀 I’m delighted you enjoyed my mewsic for today. Tis the season to be jolly and I say, let’s have some fun! Thanks for boogieing with me, girlfriend!

I like your theme within a theme 🙂 We have several chestnut trees so we were roasting them every night for a month. They are so good , you just have to remember to cut an x in them so they don’t explode in the oven. 🙂

    • Cathy Kennedy

Ellen, Y’all have chestnut trees? That’s pAwesome! DH’s grandparents had some years ago but they lost them due to some plant disease or maybe it was insects. His grandma used. To add chestnuts to her dressing for the holidays which was really good.

  • Rain Frances

I’ll be like gramma tomorrow lol…we’re getting our tree and decorating with some egg nog (heavy on the rum and brandy) and cheesecake! 🙂 Fun! We’ll have some Elvis Christmas tunes playing, for sure!

  • John Holton

You know, they sell Chex Mix all premade and everything, but (a) that takes the fun out of it and (b) you can’t vary the recipe to include more of one thing and less of another, or turn the savory recipe into sweet or whatever. The bagged Chex Mix is good if you can’t cook, though.

Christmas (the non-religious side, anyway) is all about music, laughter and food, amirite? Great list!

    • Cathy Kennedy

      John,

Store-bought Chex Party Mix doesn’t taste as good as home-made and the upside to the recipe is you don’t have to be a good cook. If you can read and follow directions then you’ll do fine. I couldn’t agree with you more on Christmas from a non-religious perspective! I’m glad you liked my playlist. It was great fun to pull together. 😊

  • -Eugenia

Wow, great selection of mewsic, Cathy! Love the Christmas food selection and you did a marvelous job of putting this post together. Enjoy your Staycation!!

    • Cathy Kennedy

      Eugenia,
It’s hard to not think of food for Christmas. The holidays is my time to throw caution to the wind…well, sorta to enjoy baking and candy making which generally means a lot of sampling. I love sharing whatever I make in the kitchen with DH & our kids. When I can remember I even share with delivery guys (or gals). Tis the season for giving!!

  • Jacqui Murray

That is a great list of Christmas songs, Cathy. And the dog eating the cookies–mine did that just yesterday! He doesn’t normally eat off of plates but he got inspired.

    • Cathy Kennedy

      Jacqui,
Oh, that’s funny! I know chocolate isn’t good for animals but I’m not sure about other sweets. Are cookies a restricted food? Thanks for joining me today!

  • Comedy Plus

Now I’m hungry. I wonder why. That’s a lot of music that refers to food and eggnog and other yummy things.

Have a fabulous time on your staycation. Love you. ♥

    Hi, Cathy!

As a young boy I watched Perry Como’s Kraft Music Hall every week with my parents. The commercials, which featured “beauty shots” – closeup footage of Kraft melted cheese and other foods – were a highlight of Como’s program. Perry Como, Dean Martin, Nat King Cole and Bing Crosby were the four most relaxed looking and sounding male singers of the 40s, 50s and 60s, as I recall. “Grandma Got Run Over By a Reindeer” is Mrs. Shady’s favorite holiday song. 🙂 I appreciate Vaughn Monroe’s rich, deep voice doing “Let It Snow.”

Just letting you know that “Over the River and Through the Woods” is “Not available for playback.”

I enjoyed the lively, whimsical version of “The 12 Days of Christmas” performed live by Straight No Chaser. Mrs. Shady used to sing “You’re a Mean One, Mr. Grinch” to our pre-school age granddaughter. Karen Carpenter’s clear, soft, yet powerful voice turned every song into a new classic and I very much enjoyed her version of “(There’s No Place Like) Home for the Holidays.” Burl Ives was a great singer and entertainer. I well remember his top 10 pop hit single “A Little Bitty Tear (let me down… spoiled my act as a clown.” I will be posting Brian Setzer recordings on SPMM in the near future.

Thanks for reporting the BOTB results. I love Seth, but I am happy to know that Clare Teal emerged victorious. She sounds like a female vocalist of the 30s, 40s or 50s time traveled to present day. I love her style!

I appreciate the Japanese proverb, “One kind word can warm three winter months.”

Thank you for the heartwarming mewiscal selections, dear friend Cathy, and have a wonderful week ahead!

    • Cathy Kennedy

      Tom,

I watched the Perry Como Christmas specials but I can’t recall who sponsored the program but I’d bet Kraft did. Thanks for telling me that ‘Over the River and Through the Woods’ isn’t working. I shall fix that after I finish responding. Clare took this BoTB by storm. I was upset that Seth didn’t score more votes but at the very least everyone did say they enjoyed both covers, so that’s nice. 🙂 I’m running way behind, so let me scoot on over to see you!
