A Gorgeous Autumn Day on the Blue Ridge Park #WW

Welcome Kittens & Dawgs!  It’s official autumn but we won’t see much in the way of fall colors until next month.  The last time I got some good autumn photographs was in 2016 while on the Blue Ridge Parkway.

THIS IS NOT FROM THIS YEAR.
We were just south of Boone, North Carolina on this mid-October day.  Just beyond the curves ahead, you can see the suspension bridge at Grandfather’s Mountain.

[tweetthis]I linked up with Curious as a Cathy for some not-so #WW fun & I invite you join the party! #photography[/tweetthis]

Last week I connected with the ABC Wednesdays community.  Today’s alphabet prompt is the letter L. Going through my photo archives,  I decided to share one of my first images captured with my big girl camera from 2012. At that time, I wasn’t nearly involved with the photo hops that I am today.  I believe I shared some of the pictures in this series a couple of years later, here, but I don’t believe this exact one.

Fort Loudon Lake in Farragut, TN just outside of Knoxville’s west side.

I’m working on improving my blog content. I explored some other mid-week hops last week. I took a peek at Scribble Picnic which is an art prompt meme.  My good friend, Claudia Wilson, introduced this to me a few years ago.   I enjoyed viewing the artwork shared by the group of artists.  Today, I am adding last week’s ‘Exploration’ prompt with my illustration.

Drawn in Procreate on my Apple iPad. Better late than never this is my ‘EXPLORATION’ inspired sketch. 🙂

Two years ago, I discovered the artist within. Please, don’t steal this one small joy.  Anywho, if you’re a regular then you’ll recognize this sketch of the mother chicken with her babies from the April 2017 A to Z Challenge. Coincidentally I used the same image in Six Sentence Stories last year, too. I decided to think outside the box of crayons for the Scribble Picnic ‘Chicken’ art challenge.

While my drawing (another Procreate illustration) isn’t scary, my childhood thoughts of a swinging footbridge (I wished I found this link before now) spanning a nearby river was a scary thought and I was totally chicken to cross it.  Thankfully, I never had to do it and I don’t think you could get me to do it even on a dare.

That’s it for this time.  Have a fototastic day and I invite you to join me for a cup of coffee in the morning while you check out my Thursday mashup — T2Q, TMP, & Writer’s Workshop post.

    1. Lydia,

It was a gorgeous on this day that we drove along the Blue Ridge Parkway. We count ourselves extremely blessed to live near the mountains. East Tennessee and western North Carolin is a nice area. 🙂

  1. I am so glad that fall is here again…..the trees etc are starting to show their autumncolours, I can’t wait
Lovely photo’s youve chosen to share, thank you

    1. Melody,

Thanks for the return visit. I’m anxious to pick up with a weekly ABC theme again. I mentioned to Roger that I used to play along with Alphabe-Thursday until it came to an end. I’m looking to get back into more of a writing pattern than I have in the past few years. I’m just ready to shake things up a bit differently than what I’m used to. I guess that’s the girl in me. 🙂

  2. I’m glad to see some of your sketches which are really good. I don’t think i would do a suspension bridge..nope, I wouldn’t. I love the 2 pics your chose with the brilliant fall colours and the lake with the boats and geese in the foreground.

    1. Birgit, thanks for you encouragement. I wasn’t supposed to add my ‘chicken’ prompt image as that’s next week’s theme. Somehow I missed that they are doing it bi-weekly but that’s not all bad as I mentioned earlier to someone because I’m working on another swinging footbridge. 🙂 I need to go back out to the lake to shoot more geese in the water this fall. Maybe the all the autumn elements will come to play in my photo shot. That would be pAwesome!

  3. A nice lake. WELCOME to ABC Wednesday. I was administrator for 10 rounds (11-20) after Mrs. Denise Nesbitt and before Melody

    1. Roger,

Thanks for the warm welcome! Years ago I participated in Alphabe-Thursday which I loved but like many long-running hops, it eventually was retired by the hostess. I’m eager to get back into the ABC groove each week!

  4. Cathy, I love your interpretation for the “chicken” art. Totally outside of the crayon box. 🙂 I’ve been uncovering my inner artist, too. It’s so much fun. Your autumn photo is so vivid and rich in color.

    1. Su-sieee,
Thank you. I actually found inspiration in someone’s sketch from last week. I can’t recall who was but that person thought outside the crayon box which I liked and so I challenged myself to do the same. It’s not easy to think outside the norm sometimes. That’s marvelous that you’re also discovering your artist side. Isn’t that fun? I’m thrilled with finding my way back to art. I somehow didn’t see the memo that my ‘chicken’ prompt wasn’t due until next week which isn’t really a bad thing because it gives me another opportunity to try sketching the swinging footbridge again using the image of the one from my childhood community. 🙂 I can’t wait to see how that turns out and I hope you’ll join me!

    1. Mimi,

I figured I was either chicken or had too much sense for my young years or maybe a little of both. lol I was thinking about that bridge last night. I guess I was younger than 6 when I stood face that thing and my uncles were trying to get me to cross it. I think every bone in my little body was shaking. Did I cross it or didn’t I? I don’t know what happened after fear took hold of my mind. I guess the trauma caused me to blank it out. lol

    1. I love archived photos! Whenever I see pictures like this, then I get fired up for the spectacular colors to arrive on the scene. Thanks for visiting!

    1. Lisa,

I’m glad you don’t mind that my photo is from a few years ago. I hope we get colors like this, this year! We’re getting enough rain this week, so just as long as the other elements play hand-in-hand then the display might be a show stopper!

    1. Lorraine,

Sometimes, we’ll take a picnic to the lake to enjoy the early evening sunlight. On this particular day, I was playing around with my first DSLR camera. Most of the pictures didn’t have the right exposure but thankfully I was able to salvage them using a photo-editing program. That’s the beauty with the digital world. I’m delighted you liked my “Exploration” sketch. I enjoyed drawing it. My swinging bridge didn’t turn out as I wanted but once I commit to something I continue on to share with others regardless of the results. That’s the only way I know to not give into my failures. 🙂 Hopefully, I learn from my mishaps. Thanks for visiting!

    1. Sandee,

That’s a very picturesque spot. I need to go back to photograph again someday soon. That’s actually a yacht club or so that’s what they call it but it’s a small marina to me. This is at Concord Park on Fort Loudon in Farragut. Maybe in a few weeks, we can catch some fall colors along the lake. That would make a great photo!

    1. Jacqui,

The colors are unbelievable, aren’t they? But, nope no photoshopping on this picture. It was just an exceptional show of color on this day. We were totally surprised because we thought for sure we’d missed out. I’m glad we were wrong. 🙂

    1. Karren,

We’re experiencing rainy weather this week so our temps are rather mild an very nice. It’ll return to normal next week. I’m just going to enjoy this for now but I am ready for it stay around. 🙂

    1. Claire,

This was an exceptionally beautiful autumn day on the parkway. I hope we see some days like this in the coming weeks. I can’t believe it’s the end of September already. Thanks for visiting!

  5. Hi, Cathy!

    Happy ABC Wednesday, dear friend!

You know how much I enjoy pictures snapped on your tours of the Blue Ridge Parkway. I don’t care if the picture was taken a couple of years ago, I appreciate the opportunity to study the beauty of fall leaves. Pictures like that one take me home to happy days of my youth in Pennsylvania. I also appreciate your picture of Fort Loudon Lake with ducks taking to the water. If I had to pick an “L” subject, the first thing that pops into my mind is “llama.” In my youth I visited a zoo that had a resident llama. The majestic animal fascinated me and I enjoyed feeding it biscuits.

If you get involved in Scribble Picnic or any other hop that involves posting your artwork, I will be here with bells on, because you have convinced me that you are quite an artist. I like your exploration inspired sketch. It reminds me of my years in Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts when we took field trips and explored historic landmarks and parks. On a visit to the mountains I once walked across a wobbly, swinging footbridge similar to the one you drew. Once was enough! 🙂

Thank you for another very interesting post. I wish you a happy ABC Wednesday, dear friend Cathy!

    1. Tom, my dear faithful friend!

Thanks for stopping by for a cup of coffee and pix. I can’t wait for the autumn colors to look like this in my photo. We’re certainly getting the rain this week but what we’ll need in the coming days is the purrrfect combination of rain, warm days, and cool nights to make the trees fall wardrobe pop!

The first time I was introduced to a llama was a rug. Yeah, that’s so not what you were expecting, huh? Anywho, the llama pelt was sooo soft. At that time, I thought I’d like to have one but not so much these days. First off, it would be expensive and two it would be a lot of trouble to clean and three I don’t need a furry rug on my floor. 😀 I prefer seeing ‘live’ llama anyhow. Just north of Knoxville, there used to be llamas grazing a hillside near a motel. I’m not sure if they are still there but that’s a good place to put a few llama to keep the vegetation down. If we ever get a large parcel of land, I told DH that we ought to get some goats to keep our property mowed. lol

The swinging bridge from my childhood years was really scary. It seemed forever long to me and it did move quite freely when traveling across it. I’m thinking I tried to cross it once but I totally chickened out no sooner than my weigh (I was very small, too) hit the boards. I haven’t been back there in many years. I wonder if it is still standing? Hmmm, I might have to ask someone on FB. Grandfather’s Mountains in Blowing Rock, North Carolina has a suspension bridge. You can see it from the Blue Ridge Parkway when we travel south from Boone. You have to know where to look to spot it, though. I want to visit Grandfather’s Mountain and even walk out on that bridge. I told DH that I have to put my brave on to do this because after all if his parents did it (they were well into their 60s or 70s at the time), then by golly so can I! The view has to be incredible from up there, too. Thanks for visiting and for your sweet remarks about my art. You’re too kind! Have a blessed and wonderful day!
