Battle of the Bands,  Monday's Music Moves Me

60s R&B #music and the #BoTB results

I appreciate you dancing over to my place this Monday morning, kittens & dawgs. The weekend is over, but who says the fun has to end? Not me! Any time is a good time to celebrate, like celebrating my last BoTB showdown. Who won? Will the polls indicated that Junior Walker and the Allstars were definitely an all-star hit for round two of Battle of the Bands.

Congratulations to the winner and many thanks to y’all for casting your votes. Now it’s time to hit the dance floor. Today, I’m featuring the R&B sound of Junior Walker and the Allstars (JWTA)!

One of JWTA’s most successful recordings hit on both R&B and pop charts in 1969 with What Does It Take To Win Your Love written by Johnny Bristol, Harvey Fuqua, and Vernon Bullock landed in the top five of the Hot 100 list.

Covering The Guess Who’s #6 peak hit (May 1969) JWTA’s version reached #3 on the R&B Singles chart and #16 on Billboard POP Singles chart later that year in October with These Eyes.

One of Marvin Gaye’s best-selling classic hits How Sweet It Is (To Be Loved By You) is another cover song of JWTA.

Junior Walker and the Allstars are a true classic R&B band from the 60s that seemed new-to-me at the time of my recent discovery. However, the first song in my line up this morning was like a flashback. I do remember JWTA. Do you want some more R&B sounds? If so, listen to Junior Walker and the Allstars The Ultimate Collection in the background while you merrily surf the web.

Did your favorite artist win in the last round of BoTB? What mewsic are you listening to lately? I’d love to know what songs are moving you, so please feel free to tell me in comments. ?

    Hi, dear Cathy!

It looks like Junior Walker won big. I’m happy to see so many ears matched mine this time. Walker and his band were indeed sensational and made enormous contributions to the Motown Sound, but they are sometimes forgotten, overshadowed in discussions of Motown greats by super star acts like Diana Ross and the Supremes, The Temptations, Marvin Gaye and The Jackson Five. I doubt very many young people ever heard of JW&TAS.

“What Does It Take” is one of my favorites by the band. It brings back memories of the summer of ’69 when I was home from college and performed a variety of odd jobs for a construction company. I always took my transistor radio along to keep me company as I worked and “What Does It Take” was at its peak the weeks I spent painting a barn on a farm property. Jr. Walker & the All Stars gave every song, original or cover, a soulful treatment and turned it into a classic. I’ll never forget the excitement of hearing that shotgun blast at the beginning of their first single, “Shotgun,” followed by the wailing sax. “Shotgun,” “Road Runner” “Shoot You Shot” and “What Does It Take” are my four faves by Jr. and his band.

I still have modern pop on the front burner and, in my new post just published, I present some recent pop recordings that are listenable and danceworthy but might shock and disturb some people. I am eager to get your impression of my current offerings.

Thank you, dear friend Cathy, and have a great week!
