A-Z Challenge

2019 The Little Mermaid #Artsketch Series #ARIEL #AtoZChallenge

Good morning, folks! This is going to be a very busy day for me and if you’re a member of one of my mewsic communities I shared a combined 4M & #BoTB post yesterday.

The last two years for the April A to Z Challenge I’ve done art sketching as my theme.  This year is no different, except I made the decision to assimilate both high-tech (iPad illustrations) and old-school (pencil drawings) sketches this time around.  Another thing I’m doing differently is to concentrate on a specific subject. I’m attempting to draw characters from the Disney classic THE LITTLE MERMAID animated movies and TV series.

DD#1 was a year old the year in 1989 when The Little Mermaid film released.  It wasn’t until after DD#2 was part of the family that we began collecting Disney cartoon classics.  I can’t recall the year we first saw this movie with the girls but they were small perhaps 4 and 2.  Some (many actually) of the lines in it targeted the adult audience.  I had many laugh-out-loud moments watching this with our girls.  I immediately fell in love with the movie and its cast of fun characters practically from the start. Using the step-by-step illustration from wikiHow, I give you the little mermaid, Ariel!

pencil sketch

Ariel is the youngest of seven sisters. Her parents are King Triton and Queen Althena.  Ariel is headstrong, impatient, and rebellious.  She sounds like every other teenage girl I know, except she was born with fins instead of feet.  Going against her Father’s stern role, the young girl learns first hand the dangers of a misfortunate future if she’s not able to fulfill a contract and a responsibility that even an adult might have trouble meeting.

[tweetthis]Celebrating the 10th anniversary of the #AtoZChallenge with my 6th-year participation in the April #blogfest. Join me this month with my #TheLittleMermaid characters #artsketch theme. A for #ARIEL. #pencildrawing #prismacolorpencils[/tweetthis]

pencil design filled in with Prismacolor pencils

Filling in my design with Prismacolor pencils proved tricky especially with the smaller elements in my illustration like the eyes and lips. I didn’t do a great job but I had fun doing it all the same.  If you enjoyed today’s post I insist you check out yesterday’s BoTB ‘Part of Your World’ showdown (at the bottom of post).

I’m heading off to link up with other fellow AtoZers and you’re invited to come along.  For my fellow A2Zers, please leave a breadcrumb (direct post URL) in comments so I might find my way easily to you.  You’re invited to return tomorrow for another the next installment in my Little Mermaid Artsketch Series!

      Binky,

It’s okay, I get where Granny is comin’ from and there’s no shame in watching such a timeless, precious animated classic at any age. Thanks for visiting!

  • Cherdo

Hey, I’m a drawing fool, too! I love my Faber-Castel pencils (I’ll bet we have passed each other at Jerry’s Artarama).

Nice drawing! I’ll be stopping by for the rest!

      Cherdo,

First I learn we’re practically neighbors, then your grandparents live in WV (we grew up in the southern part of the state), and now you tell me that you like to doodle, too! WOW, what a coincidence! We’re so so much alike that it’s scary. Of course, I think you’re a little nuts but I like you that about you and that’s coming from a fruitcake. lol

      Jackie,

The early Disney Princesses are so cute, sweet, and full of big eye wonder. Creating sketches from this movie provided quiet tender reflections spent with my darlin’ wee ones once upon a time. Thanks for visiting!

  • Kim

It’s beautiful! You are so talented, Cathy. I can’t imagine doing a sketch every single day for a month, but if anyone can do it, you can! I can’t wait to see the rest of the sketches!

      Marie,

I have my home page URL set in the 4M link up but if you clicked on today’s post then there’s a direct link to it and you’ll find a list of my daily post for the past 7-days in my side menu. Plus, I am sharing my 4M posts each week early on Sunday. You just have too much on your mind, I think. 😉

  • XmasDolly

Totally and Absolutely LUV IT!!!! It’s the cutest thing ever and I think I’m going to save this one for sure! Thanks for sharing girlfriend! Totally AWWWWWWWWWWWWWESOME! HUGS

      Mary,

I’m glad you found time amidst all the busyness to visit today. I’ve been stretched a bit thing playing catch up, checking out A2Z posts, casting BoTB votes, and boogieing with 4M goers. Plus, comparing banks mortgaging process and putting numbers on the paper to see what we can do comfortably. It’s stressful but I’m keeping positive. 🙂 Of course, I might have my hair pulled out in the end. lol Have a good afternoon, my friend!

      Kathe,

Yeah, I’m busier than I’d like to be with this challenge going on but I decided to run with it anyhow. Thanks for dropping by, my dear!

  • Trudy

Wonderful start to the A to Z challenge! I’m excited to see your sketches.

One of my granddaughters loves Ariel and also loves ballet, so we took her to a ballet performance of The Little Mermaid but we didn’t realize the production was based on the original Little Mermaid story which lacks Disney’s happy ending for Ariel. We had one extremely upset little girl on our hands afterward. Now anytime I think of The Little Mermaid, I think of that night.

    • Cathy Kennedy

      Trudy,

I’ve not seen any live performance of any of the Disney classics but The Little Mermaid was a favorite of our daughters. Our son watched it but he preferred other animated Disney films. He was more of Pooh Bear fan. 🙂 Thanks for stopping by for a visit. Now, I’m heading over to see you.

  • Lisa

I’m looking forward to seeing B-Z now! I’m glad your participating again. You’ve been doing it a long time, this is just my second year.

    • Cathy Kennedy

      Lisa,

Thanks for stopping by for peek. 🙂 Sketching gives me great joy. I hope it inspires you to overcome self-doubt. The A2Z challenge was my springboard to discover the wannabe artist inside. 🙂

  • scr4pl80

Love it. Looking forward to the rest of your drawings. The Little Mermaid was one of my favorite movies to watch with the kids. Happy A to Z’ing!

  • Debbie D.

You’re off to a great start, Cathy! 🙂 I love your sketches and also The Little Mermaid. Even though we don’t have kids, our video library includes most of the Disney movies, including this one.

    • Cathy Kennedy

      Debbie,

You don’t have to have kids to enjoy these classic films. The writers didn’t just think about the children, as they kept the adults in mind with some of the comical lines that only a grown-up can understand. 🙂

  • Duncan David

I used to do art at school but always found drawing faces the most insanely difficult part!
Sorry, I don’t have a handy link as I’m on my ipad tonight doing some visits. But you can copy and paste this into your browser:

    • Cathy Kennedy

      Duncan,

I think drawing any part of the human form is tricky. I certainly don’t have it nailed but it’s a lot of fun to give it my best shot!

  • Ronel Janse van Vuuren

Love your theme 🙂 Your A-Z sketches are always inspiring to me — it makes me want to try harder at drawing my fantasy characters. Ariel looks great!

Ronel visiting from the A-Z Challenge with Music and Writing All the A’s

    • Cathy Kennedy

      Ronel,

Many thanks for the visit and the kind words. I know my Ariel isn’t a dead ringer for the Disney character but it was fun to try to recreate her the best I know how. 🙂 Best of luck with your artwork and just go with the flow. Enjoy it for what it is!

  • Birgit

I always loved that name and I love the story of the Little Mermaid but I have never seen the movie..I know! I have to change this and I expect a happy ending not like the book. Love your drawings because you did a great job capturing her face and the whole figure…well done!

  • Thomas Anderson

    Hi, Cathy!

Happy April Fools’ Day and Happy A To Z to you, dear friend! I am excited to see the artwork you have to offer this year. I can tell from your “A” post that combining high-tech with old-school offers the best of both worlds and will make your illustrations pop, a most enjoyable series for us to view. I have not seen The Little Mermaid movie or TV series and therefore the story line and all of the other characters will be new to me. I look forward to seeing them and learning about them as we go along. “A” is for Ariel, the main character, and you did a fine job on her. I think you got the eyes and lips looking very natural. She looks fresh, beautiful and filled with curiosity and enthusiasm. The elements of her world in the deep blue sea are nicely rendered and equally natural looking. I appreciate the muted watercolor scheme and the composition. It’s a wonderful job and a great start to the A To Z. You’re off and running, dear friend Cathy. See you tomorrow! 🙂

    • Cathy Kennedy

      Tom,

The Prismacolor pencils don’t convey as vibrant as my digital artwork through Procreate. Maybe, if I had a better light source on my sketch pad when I photographed it then it would look better. Regardless, I am happy to share it even if the colors are muted and I appreciate your wonderful encouragement, my friend. Thank you for making this journey a fun one!

    • Cathy Kennedy

      Keith,

Thank you for being apart of my art sketch series this month. It’ll be a lot of fun to share with you and all my readers. Now, I’m heading over to see you!
