2019 The Little Mermaid #art sketch series ‘QUEEN’ #AtoZChallenge

Thanks for joining in today.  If you missed previous posts in The Little Mermaid Artsketch series you can find them easily under Latest Mews in my side menu.  ☞ ☞ ☞

Let me introduce you to Atlantica’s QUEEN – Athena!

In the first LM movie, we know that the Queen died when Ariel was a child. Long story short, pirates attack merpeople. Triton escapes with the younger daughters, but the oldest’s fin becomes entangled and Athena frees her but then tries to retrieve the mewsic box (a gift from the King) but is crushed to death by the pirate ship that sinks.  This is the reason for Triton’s hatred of humans and ban against the human world.

Athena appeared in the Disney 2008 sequel, The Little Mermaid: Ariel’s Beginning.  Of all of her daughters Ariel, Andrina, Arista, Aquata, Adella, Alana, & Attina, Athena resemblance is reflected most in Ariel with her stunning beauty and gorgeous auburn hair.

This illustration was drawn by sight only, no step-by-step directions or art video tutorials.  I’m rather pleased with how Athena turned out. I can’t wait to colorize this sketch! 👏

[tweetthis]Celebrating the 10th anniversary of the #AtoZChallenge with my 6th-year participation in the April #blogfest. Join me this month with my #TheLittleMermaid characters #artsketch theme. Q is for Queen. #pencildrawing #Althena #illustrations[/tweetthis]

I’m breaking away to join Ellen and Lorraine in 😻Friendly Fill-ins😻 who incidentally are doing the A to Z Challenge, too. 😉

1. An Easter ( or Passover) memory that  I have is going to Sunday School, having a big dinner, and hunting Easter eggs. We often spend Easter Sunday with family, so it was fun getting together with the cousins which reminds me of one Easter we were having a mud ball fight and I got hit square in the eye with one.  That killed the fun right there with a real shiner for days to remember how I spent Easter.  Here’s a picture from that Easter before my injury. I’m in the back row with blonde hair and hair on my face.

2. I hope to purchase a new home this year. This has been a dream of mine for years. It took years to get DH to see the need but he finally came around and now he’s actively searching various online real estate apps for homes of interest.

3. When the days are warm, I usually have to turn the air conditioning on especially if I’m doing any baking like yesterday.

4. If the Easter Bunny visited my house, he’d be disappointed because there aren’t any little kiddies here anymore. That’s okay, he can leave the candy for me.

I’m heading off to link up with other fellow AtoZers and you’re invited to come along.  For my fellow A2Zers, please leave a breadcrumb (direct post URL) in comments so I might find my way easily to you.  You’re invited to return tomorrow for another the next installment in my Little Mermaid Artsketch Series! You did a great job with Ariel’s mom. I’m with you on the Easter bunny, he can leave the candy for me

  • L.M.G. Miller

Your drawings are beautiful! I haven’t done a pencil drawing in ages, but you’re inspiring me to. And thank you for joining in on the Friendly Fill-Ins! Easter egg hunts were one of my favorite things about this holiday as a child. Your flashback photo is beautiful, though I am sorry you ended up with a black eye!

    • Cathy Kennedy

      Lorraine,

I’m glad you’re feeling inspired. You certainly inspire me every time I see your adorable critter artwork. That was my first black eye. I got another one a few years later playing Red Rover while on a Girl Scout backyard camp out. A big girl, she had to be twice my size height and width, broke the line where I stood. She came barrelling across the yard with her elbow out which was the purrfect height for my eye. I think I really saw stars with that hit, too.

  • Birgit

The sketch is great and love the face…you caught her beauty. Ouch to the mud ball in your eye. Ahh, I remember playing in the mud and the sawdust pile, since I grew up on a sawmill. My mom was never happy about that. I’m looking forward to some warmth but not the heat..I’m I sure with the AC on. Easter=chocolate but I was good this year.

    • Cathy Kennedy

      Birgit,

Playing in the dirt is part of growing up, isn’t it? 🙂 I’m with you, I like the warmth but not the heat. We’re already getting the latter, too. Yesterday, it was in the upper 70s. Our bedroom AC was needed last night but wound up shutting it off around 2:30am but then I couldn’t go back to sleep. 🙁 Today’s forecast… low 80s and sunny, so it’s going to be hot!

    • Cathy Kennedy

      John,

I’m glad you can see it. I think I got Athena’s drawing the closest to any of the Disney characters so far that I’ve illustrated. Thanks for visiting!

    • Cathy Kennedy

      Sharon,

I’m royally happy with the raving reviews I’m getting on Queen Athena from my peeps. Thank you so for your sweet comment and visit. 😉

    Hi Cathy,
Queen Athena has turned out really good. Her eyes are so kind and you are right – she resemble Ariel.
I did not about Queen’s so many other daughters and that all their names begin with A!
I can very well understand King’s anger and hatred towards Humans… Did not know she met a tragic end!

You look very cute in the picture you have posted. Also Happy house hunting…may you find the house of your dreams😊

    Quickening

    • Cathy Kennedy

      Kislaya,

I remember there a lot of sisters but I didn’t know all their names started with an ‘A’. Have you noticed in Disney films the parents generally widow or widower? That always made me sad to know that the daughter grows up without her mother. 🙁 Thanks for joining me on Friday. I’m playing catch up this morning and am your way soon.

Great job on Athena – i hope some day you color this one! I enjoyed seeing your Easter photo. It reminded me of some of mine – spending the day with my cousins where we lived near Kansas City. We of course, first had to go to church and then home for the easter egg hunt. Good luck on the house search. It must be exciting. We finally sold seven years ago and now we only rent, in case we want to pick up and move again some day.

    • Cathy Kennedy

      Sandy,

I definitely will colorize Athena as I plan to do all my Disney sketches in this series. They are forthcoming in the not-so-distant future beginning early next month. 😉

  • Sandee

Well done as always. She’s beautiful.

I love your fill ins and you were a very cute little gal. Yes indeed.

I hope you get your new home this year.

Have a fabulous day and weekend, Cathy. Love and hugs. ♥

  • Lisa

I didn’t know about the Queen. With all those daughters, Triton must have been hoping for sons! Cute sketch.

    • Cathy Kennedy

      Lisa,

You’d think with that many kids, the royal parents would have had at least one boy. All I kept thinking so many daughters to raise on his own…poor guy! I think girls can be more difficult to raise than boys most of the time. Thanks for visiting!

  • XmasDolly

Girlfriend you never fail to please. Your Queen shines among the rest I’m sure. I forgot all about her. I swear I think I should go watch the movie just so I can keep up with you. Fabulous job. I don’t get to see my great granddaughter much, but I do have a new picture for Easter and next Wednesday to show off. She’s a little cutie pie for sure. Thank you for stopping by. You were such a cutie pie too when you were little. I never thought you had blonde hair. You go girl. Awwwwwww and you got a black eye on Easter… very uncool. So sorry sweetie. Good luck with the house hunt and don’t forget to have a huge housewarming party! Those are the best. Have a great day!

    • Cathy Kennedy

      Marie,

Athena wasn’t in the first Little Mermaid movie but made an appearance at the beginning of the second film Ariel’s Beginning and only referenced to in the TV series. Doing this series has reintroduced me to things forgotten and taught me things I didn’t know. It’s been great fun! I’m looking forward to your photo share of your little great-granddaughter. 🙂

Oh yeah, I had blonde hair but as I got older it changed. Today it’s sandy blonde or light brown, especially with all the glitter. My sister had really blonde hair, too. Hers was platinum blonde for the longest time and when she got old enough, she just kept it colored. My brother had brown hair as you can see in the picture. What’s funny is my dad who has jet black hair and blonde hair as a boy. Mom has always had auburn red, more brown than red but you can see it. My hair color is closer to hers. Thanks for popping by today. I hope you & your family have a wonderful Easter weekend.

Thank you for participating in the fill-ins, great answers. Although I am sorry you ended up with a shiner on Easter. That photo is precious, thanks for sharing it. I I hope you get your new house soon. Excellent drawing of Athena. Have a wonderful and blessed Easter. XO

  • Arlee Bird

No kids at my house for Easter either. Hard to believe that I haven’t bought any Easter candy yet! I almost always have some Peeps and chocolate marshmallow eggs in my cupboards by now.

Another nice drawing. It amazing that you are keeping this theme going for the whole month! Nice job.

      Lee,

I love Peeps but haven’t bought any in a few years. Sometimes, we’ll get the Christmas shaped Peeps to put in our hot chocolate. I’ve enjoyed keeping The Little Mermaid as my art sketch focus. The past two years I really felt I had no direction, I just drew whatever inspired me at the moment but this time I had a clear plan and I liked that. Thanks for visiting, my friend!

  • Jade Li

Such a beautiful rendering of the Queen. This is one of your best that I’ve seen in the A2Z series. I also love the picture of you and you sibs and cousins gathering for the holiday.

    • Cathy Kennedy

      Jade,

I’m happy to hear you like Queen Athena. She did turn out beautifully. I feel rather proud of my accomplishment with this one. Thanks for letting me know. 😉

  • scr4pl80

I don’t remember the sad story of Athena’s passing. Maybe I’ll have to watch the movie again. Very nice drawing. I’m looking forward to the color version too.

    • Cathy Kennedy

      Janet,

I think in the first movie it’s only briefly mentioned and she’s not in it. I had all but forgot about her until I began this series so it’s been a nice refresher to the story line.

  • Thomas Anderson

    Hi, Cathy!

Happy Sillyless Good Friday and “Q” day, dear friend!

I would say this drawing of the Queen is your best rendering of a beautiful “woman” thus far, and that includes back through the years. From the knees up, she looks like one of the lovelies in the Sports Illustrated swimsuit Issue. Her features are delicate and perfect – the face, the hair, the torso and her posture. It amazes me that she was drawn from sight only. Nicely done, dear friend! I have an observation if you don’t mind me pointing it out. I looked up the Queen character on Wiki and her name is spelled “Athena”…without an “L”. While on that page, I also noticed the interesting tidbit that two different voice actresses played Queen Athena, one to do her speaking parts and the other for her singing. I hope you colorize this beauty because I’d love to see the end result.

Like you I have fond memories of coloring Easter eggs. A large group of Lions Club families (my dad was twice president of the local chapter) gathered every year to paint dozens of eggs for the organization’s annual Easter Egg Hunt. I can’t imagine being socked in the eye with a mud ball. You are lucky it didn’t do any damage, Cathy. I wish you and DH success in your house hunt this year. We are running the air conditioner constantly for the last month or more.

Once again congratulations on this terrific illustration of The Queen, dear friend Cathy. Have a happy Friday!

    • Cathy Kennedy

      Tom,

Thank you for pointing out my goof of the Queen’s name. I must need new glasses. I could’ve sworn there was an ‘L’ in her name. I’m fixing that pronto! Also, thank you for saying such wonderful things about my illustration. My hand is becoming more trained to match the eye which I’m very happy to see in my work and that you’ve noticed as well.

I am very blessed that nothing serious happened to my eye. It was sore, gritty, and bruised. I have a picture from that Easter which I meant to add to this post and forgot to that. Check back in a little bit for the addition. Have a happy Good Friday, my friend!

      • Thomas Anderson

        Hi again, Cathy!

Thanks for posting that old picture from childhood. You were such a cutie pie! I am thankful you weren’t injured when hit in the eye with a mud ball. I see that you also added a meme for Friday Sillies. Now your post is complete. Thank you, dear friend Cathy!

        • Cathy Kennedy

          Tom,

Yeah, I’m trying to tie my sillies in with this month’s A2Z theme and keep it simple. There’s one thing for certain looking at this old photo, you can see we all share a bit of the family resemblance. Today, I wonder if we still would. Unfortunately, a few in the picture are no longer with us, like my baby brother standing in front of me on my left side. Gosh, I miss that little guy (bigger than me as an adult) a lot!

        • Thomas Anderson

I can tell it tugs at your heartstrings to look at pictures of your little brother. Bittersweet memories!
