Battle of the Bands,  Wordless Wednesday

Wednesday mashup – #WW + 2019 #BoTB Round 9 ‘The Sign’ showdown

Earlier in the month, I wanted to use Ace of Base ‘The Sign’ in my first showdown but I decided it was best to sit that battle out. That’s okay, I’m running with it now.  I picked the 1994 hit because it released the same year and month of DS’s birth.  It’s also interesting to me that AoB was established in 1990 which is the year DD#2 was born whose birthday was yesterday.

Anyhow, this is who I came up with for this battle showdown.

The first contender is a band I shared in last year’s March 1st showdown so this was a happy discovery and sealing them for one of my top two feature mewsicians.  Give a listen to Swedish Hitz Goes Metal!

The next contender is a new-to-me American rock band based in Tempe, Arizona.  When I stumbled on them, my first thought was the Pine Tree state but obviously, I missed that. Anywho, give a listen to The Maine!

Remember there’s no wrong vote, except a no-vote! Whatcha got to lose voice your opinion in comments by telling me which band you like the best – 🎸Swedish Hitz or The Maine🎸!

[tweetthis]I just voted in the ‘2019 #BoTB Round 9 ‘The Sign’ Showdown between #SwedishHitzGoesMetal & #TheMaine! #cover[/tweetthis]

DID YOU VOTE? No! Okay, but if you leave WITHOUT voting, I won’t be held responsible for what happens to your computer. Just saying is all. 😂

A few views from Mother’s Day…. a creamy treat from Freddy’s!

DH enjoyed a single serving of vanilla soft-serve while I indulge my taste buds to a mini Signature Turtle Sundae. Do you have a Freddy’s in your area? Their soft-serve is de-e-e-licious! We’re eager to try their burgers and fries as soon as DH is off his restricted diet. 🙂

DH being the sweetheart that he is got me this adorable pink rose plant from Walmart! I hate to remove it from its container but I have to if I want it to grow big and beautiful!

I’m dismissing with the linky party with Internet traffic slowing down for the summer but you’re welcome to leave a breadcrumb (direct link) in comments for others to easily find you.  😉

Yesterday, DH saw his retina surgeon.  In case you don’t know, DH had a detached retina two years ago which meant countless visits and procedures. I’m happy to report that he no longer has to go back to see him again!  Yippee!

Tomorrow, I hope to join my friend in the launch of her Thursday Art with Rain hop if I can get my sketch done in time and I hope you’ll stop in for a peek. Have a wonderful day!  X💋X💋, Cathy

I like the 2nd one, The Maine, better. It’s easier to follow, it’s tight with the melody, and it has soul. The first one was an aural assault and I started to get a headache 30 seconds in. THE MAINE has my vote.

      John,

I’m not a metal fan, either but I do like SHGM. Last year, I used this band along with two others in a battle. They didn’t win and only had one more vote than the other group that didn’t take the win. Now, I’m wondering if that showdown would’ve had a heavier swing toward the victor like there is in this one? pondering thought I guess, we’ll never know. Thanks for tossing another vote toward Swedish Hitz Goes Metal.

  • -Eugenia

Aww, Cathy, what lovely roses and I love the container. I’m so glad to hear about DH’s eye results. That’s great news!

Even though I like both groups, my vote goes to Maine.

    • Cathy Kennedy

      Eugenia,

Thanks for joining in this round of BoTB. I have you down for The Maine. We’re happy to get this bit of good mews on DH’s eye. The road has been long!

  • Birgit

I don’t like either of these but I will go with Maine because they were less annoying. The Swedish metal was too irritating for my nerves…hahahaaa. I love the roses you received and I know it will be a lovely addition to your garden.

    • Cathy Kennedy

      Birgit,

I so missed this BoTB. Everyone who goes with The Maine like you really doesn’t care for the SHGM band. I’m not 100% sure I’d vote for them but I like their sound. Different strokes for different folks, right? Thanks for voting, my friend.

    Hi Cathy.
Thanks for the warm welcome back! It’s good to be battling with old friends!
Sounds like you had a lovely –and sweet– Mother’s Day.
Re: Freddy’s: yes, we have Freddy’s here in Austin and one not far from me. I think I’ve been there before but I think I just got a burger. You got me in the mood for soft-serve, which I absolutely LOVE. I’m a big fan of Dairy Queen’s soft serve. I’m like your husband: I just like a plain vanilla soft-serve. There’s something about the texture that I like and I don’t like any “foreign objects” like nuts or candy or anything to be interfering with that soft creamy texture! I’m like that with regular ice cream too. No nuts please! I have a feeling while I’m out running crazy this week I’ll drop by Freddys’ and pick up a soft-serve, just to see how they rank with Dairy Queen in my mind….

Oh, and the roses in that adorable planter are lovely!

As for your battle, I’ll go with Maine. I liked their sound much better than the first group. The first group I didn’t dig their sound at all. It was too jarring and jumbly, if that makes sense. I liked Maine’s sound. (And I’d really like to go to Maine. There is someting about that state that has seemed to call to me over the years. Not sure why. In fact, I used Portland Maine as the setting for a serial killer murder mystery I started writing way back when…

Hope you’re having a good week.
See you over at my place. I haven’t yet responded to comments because I first want to go around and hit everyone’s battle. So talk to ya soon.

    Love ya,

    Michele at Angels Bark

  • JamericanSpice (@Jamericanspice)

I’ve always enjoyed Ace of Base..I like their sound. Maybe I’ll go with Swedish Hitz

I’m glad you and the DH had a sweet outing 🙂 We…probably have a Freddies. I’m not sure. I go to Great American Cookie when I want a Sundae.

I’m glad he also got you a rose bush! Sooo much better than a picked flower! You get to grow this sweet love.

And the container is so cute! I love butterflies!

And that is wonderful news about his eye! I can’t tell you the relief to not have so much of that worry!

    • Cathy Kennedy

      Colette,

Thank you for voting for Swedish Hitz! I agree a plant is better than fresh but flowers but those are nice, too. I’d rather have flowers that will return again and again with each year which is such a cheery sight. 🙂

  • Mary B

    Hi there Cathy!

Happy Wednesday to you! Interesting battle. I had thought for sure someone had done this one before, but i couldn’t find it in the master list. I must be losing my mind (truly not hard to do anymore). I’m voting for The Maine today!

    • Cathy Kennedy

      Mary,

Sometimes I remember to check your master list which I really need to do so more often but I’m glad that my battle song hasn’t been used yet. I love it when I’m accidentally pAwesome. lol Thanks for voting in this round for The Maine.

  • Stephen T. McCarthy

    HiYa, CATHY!
    It’s that me — STMcC.

First off, great news about DH’s recovery! Prayers were said and answered. Thanks for the update, my friend.

    Now, onto the Battle…

I’ve been pretty convinced for a long time that in reality there are only 2 or 3 Metal bands in existence, and they keep recording the same 2 or 3 songs over and over under a hundred different song titles and band names.

Therefore, based on that statement, I guess you know already that my vote is going to The Maine. 😉

      Stephen,

Yes indeed God answered prayers. There’s no denying the Man has been listening and we surely appreciate you for remembering him, too.

I’m telling you I didn’t see these results coming. I was certain that SHGM would do better than they are but nope bad call on my part. Another vote goes to The Maine! Thanks for stopping by, my friend!

    • Cathy Kennedy

      Deb,

Miniature rose plants are so cute. I’m eager to put it in a larger container. They don’t last long in our hard soil. It’ll be interesting to see how it does. Thanks for visiting. 😉

Last year in our travels I remember seeing a couple of those Freddy’s restaurants and was curious about them though didn’t stop. In fact when we stayed in Arkansas the motel we stayed at was right next to a Freddy’s that was being build. Maybe we’ll try one this summer.

My oldest daughter used to have the Ace of Base album and she played it a lot. I actually liked it so I didn’t mind hearing it that often. I didn’t like these covers as much as the original.
The first metal cover just seemed so chaotic and didn’t appeal that much to me.

The sound of the second was aurally more interesting to me so that’s my vote…

    A vote for The Maine.

      Lee,

The Ace of Base has a good sound. By the time our kids got into their teens, they began listening to heavier or more gothic rock mewsic which didn’t always appeal to me. If you like soft-serve, then if given the chance try Freddy’s. For years, Knoxville didn’t have a place other than Dairy Queen or other fast food restaurants to get low-quality soft-serve. Our favorite place when we first moved to town to get it was Malcolm’s on Clinton Highway which disappeared after we’d been here a few years and then there was Dixieland in-between Kodak and Sevierville that was pAwesome which also shut down in the late 90s. I’m happy to see the return of soft-serve in our area. Oh, wait…there’s another place in town that’s been here forever which we haven’t tried yet, The Original Freezo, on Central Avenue. We stopped one-day last summer but they only take cash so we didn’t get anything. Maybe, we can try again this year. 🙂 I have you down for The Maine.

  • Debbie D.

Hi Cathy; Cool! You have a metal band in the mix. 🙂 So yes, I’m choosing that one – no surprise, right? 😉 The second one was a bit too “soft pop” for my taste, although the singer has a lovely vocal tone.

Nice treats for Mother’s Day! No Freddy’s in Canada, but we have Dairy Queen, which is sort of similar. I’m skipping the #WW linkups until May 29. Too many things at once, for me.

Glad to know that DH is on the mend and can enjoy his favourite foods once again. Thanks for voting in my BOTB. Cheers!

    • Cathy Kennedy

      Debbie,

You’re right no surprise that you’re going with Swedish Hitz Goes Metal. We have Dairy Queens in the area but Freddy’s soft-serve trumps them by a mile! No worries about not linking back to your place this go around but if anyone wishes to vote in your showdown then hopefully they’ll know what to do. We’re glad things are falling into place like they should with DH’s overall issues with his teeth and eyes. Have a good day, my friend!

  • Sandee

I like The Maine better than the first one, so that’s my vote.

I want to go to Freddy’s.

Thank you for joining the Wordless Wednesday Blog Hop.

Have a fabulous Wordless Wednesday. Love and hugs. ♥

  • Rain Frances

Hey Cathy 🙂 Hmmm…I like BOTH of them! I used to be a metal head in the 80’s…I had an Iron Maiden jacket lol…I saw Metallica twice in the 90’s…but then again, I was into punk and alternative rock too, funny how my taste varies! But I like the soft voice of The Maine, it seems to be a more original composition…I think my vote today will be for The Maine! Thanks for mentioning our date 😉 See you then!!! 🙂

    • Cathy Kennedy

      Rain,

Thanks for playing along in this round of BoTB. I have your vote recorded for The Maine. It’s an honor to share your new artsy connection. I hope it’s a huge success and I’m excited to take part in it. 😉

  • DrillerAA

Freddy’s came to our town a couple of years ago. While I am not a huge fan of their extra thin burger patties, I am a triple dish of chocolate man on almost every visit. It is perhaps the best chocolate soft serve in the industry.

    • Cathy Kennedy

      Driller,

The first Freddy’s we came across was a few years ago in Morristown (northeast of Knoxville about 45 mins) but never made up there to try them and then in recent weeks while out knocking around we spotted a Freddy’s in Oak Ridge which is northwest of from downtown Knoxville. We tried Freddy’s a couple of weeks ago right after DH had dental surgery, each getting a single flavor with him getting the vanilla and me the chocolate. You’re right about the chocolate being the best in the industry, not that I have a lot of tasting experience but judging the few soft-serve spots we’ve sampled it was an instant declaration in our minds that Freddy’s is top dog with its chocolately tasting chocolate soft-serve. Everyone wants to be skimpy on flavor and not only on chocolate. Culvers is a second with Hwy 55 falling to a distant third place. There’s a Berkshires in Morristown that we really like, so we need to see how they stack against Freddy’s now.

What fabulous news about your husband! We know a lot about detached retinas here and how delicate all of that is, it’s great that he is healed up.

Some metal i enjoy, this one i just couldn’t finish. The Maine gets my vote.

      • Cathy Kennedy

        Mimi,

Eyesight is a delicate thing. I knew this but didn’t understand until DH faced the scary truth and am so thankful God kept His healing hands upon him. Thank you for voting for The Maine in this round of BoTB!

  • Thomas Anderson

    Hi, Cathy!

Happy BOTB day and happy birthday to your younger daughter, dear friend!

I was not familiar with Freddy’s Frozen Custard & Steakburgers. I needed to look up store locations and found that there are two in North Sarasota, but they aren’t very close to us. I was curious to know what all goes into a Signature Turtle Sundae. I discovered it has “fresh & creamy vanilla custard, hot fudge, hot caramel, toasted pecans, whipped cream & a cherry.” I gained five pounds just reading about it! 🙂 DH is a sweetie for giving you that mug of roses for Mother’s Day! They are beautiful, and you will have that pretty container as a keepsake. I am happy to know that the problems he had with his eyes these past two years are now “20-20 hindsight.”

Turning to today’s battle, act number one is a little confusing. From what I gather, Swedish Hitz Goes Metal is actually the name of a compilation album of progressive metal covers of pop hits recorded by a Majestica (formerly ReinXeed), a symphonic/power metal band from Boden, Sweden, led by Tommy ReinXeed. The American band The Maine has an alternative rock sound, but the lead vocal is a little too soft and emo to suit my ears. I saw the sign and heard both versions. In Shady’s book, metal beats emo rock every time and today is no exception. I prefer the full force power metal treatment of “The Sign” by Tommy ReinXeed from the album Swedish Hitz Goes Metal!

Have a great day, dear friend Cathy. I am eager to see more of your artwork tomorrow!

    • Cathy Kennedy

      Tom,

I forgot to mention that DH also went back to the dentist yesterday and his sutures removed. His dietary restrictions have been removed. Of course, without his two back molars (one on each side) it makes eating tricky but he’ll adjust until he gets his crown. Here we come Freddy’s for a burger & fries! 😀

I didn’t do my homework thoroughly and very much appreciated the tidbits you shared on Swedish Hitz Goes Metal. I knew instantly when I put this round together that you’d go with them, too. The first vote goes to SHGM – Majestica!
