Monday's Music Moves Me

10 Rock n’ Roll songs from the 60s

Good day! I hope life is treating you well and that you had a fun, relaxing weekend. Earlier this morning, I shared my mid-month BoTB.  If you missed it then I hope you’ll take a moment to cast your ballot for your favorite artist.

Our lovely Marie wants us to build a playlist of old rock n’ roll songs to share on the Monday’s Music Moves Me dance floor.   If you ask kids today, they’ll say music from the 80s are the oldies.  I collected my picks from 100 greatest songs of the 1960s to compose my 10 Rock n’ Roll Songs playlist for no other wise than what jumped out at me.

playlist songs: 1. White Room ~Cream 2. California Dreamin’ ~The Mamas & The Papas 3. [I Can’t Get No] Satisfaction ~ The Rolling Stones 4. The House of the Rising Sun ~The Animals 5. Dancing in the Street ~Martha Reeves & the Vandellas 6. She’s Not There ~The Zombies 7. Whipping Post ~The Allman Brothers Band 8. White Rabbit ~Jefferson Airplane 9. Respect ~Aretha Franklin 10. Good Vibrations ~The Beach Boys

I love it when people build YouTube playlists.  All I have to do is hit play for a continual stream of music to enjoy for a half an hour or more while I tend to other things and so I invite you to hit play now to enjoy mine.

This month’s honorary co-hostess is Marie from XmasDolly

This is a mewsic linky party. Every other week we have a suggested mewsic theme (see side menu) to build your song set around and all participants share YouTube or Vimeo videos for our mewsic enthusiasts.  Failure to meet this basic guideline puts your URL in danger of being removed or labeled – NO MUSIC.

What decade do you think of music as the “Oldies”?  I hope you’ll share some rock n’ roll from your favorite decade with us on the dance floor.  We love boogie!   I’ll return on Wednesday for some mid-week fun.  Have an awwwesome week!  X💋X💋, Cathy

I can’t say the 50’s and early 60’s are the oldies for me, because it makes me feel old (in a way) when I really don’t feel old, normally. But anyway, these songs were sung in turbulent times, but were they ever good. And they still are! I had some of these as 45’s (California Dreaming, Dancing in the Streets) and I probably played each of them a zillion times. Very satisfying set that had me dancing in my bedroom.

According to Wikipedia, the Whipping Post appeared on the Allman Brothers’ 1969 debuted album. Little known facts like this, I’m clueless on and am at the mercy of the Internet to learn these things. 🙂

I so enjoyed listening to this music which, to me is far and away so much better than much of the crap you hear today…to be so blunt. Much of the time, the so called singers just repeat the same words(Umbrella, whatever that Justin Bieber song is). Anyway, I really enjoyed it and I consider the 50s to be “old” and it was the beginnings for Rock N Roll. I love almost every decade.

      Birgit,

Other than the great sounds of yesterday, the lyrics told a story and you can understand the words. The musicians were awesome and the singers equally talented. I’m like you in pretty much in that I love almost every decade except just up to the millennium. Beyond that there’s only a handful of good songs.

      Nicole,

No doubt the 60s had some great music but it’s hard for me to say it was the best when I like all of the oldie sounds from the 50-80s. Even the 40s and 90s are good. 🙂

These were all great songs and have stood the test of time! I went back a little further with mine, but these were all popular when I was in grade school.

The time change wasn’t bad for me, but the fall back is a killer. Takes me several days to recoup.

Love the playlist. Takes me back to my youth. I’m listening to White Room right now. Awesome.

Awww on the kitties. Mom and baby. Most adorable.

Thank you for joining the Awww Mondays Blog Hop.

Have a fabulous Awww Monday and week, Cathy. Love and hugs. ♥

Oh my, l love your playlist.

My local oldies station used to play music from the 50’s and 60’s…then they dropped the 50’s music and added the 70’s…

Now they play mostly music from the 80’s. And the morning drive time DJ is someone I actually listed to in the 1980’s. I feel old.

      Robin,

I love SiriusXM various oldie channels. It’s great to listen to a particular decade. Sometimes, we like listening to tunes from the 40s. The music from the 80s was good, too. Don’t feel old, let the music revive your soul pulling out the kid at heart in you. 😉

Absolutely awesome playlist. Brings back a ton of memories. When I was a sophomore in high school, I took an architectural drafting class and our anthem was “House of the Rising Sun.” All of these songs are in my high school to early adulthood. I was always a little more of a Stones fan than Beatles and “Satisfaction” is a favorite of mine to this day. Thanks for the memories. Have a blessed week.

    Hi again, Cathy!

Happy Awww-some 4M First Monday of Daylight Saving, dear friend! Did you enjoy getting an hour less sleep? 🙂

Ha! You’re not kidding. To millennials, mewic of the 80s is ancient history, nevermind the 50s, 60s and 70s, the golden years of my youth. It won’t be long before anything released prior to 2000 is considered an oldie but goody. I’m sure it already is among many of today’s teens and 20-somethings. The 13 year (I think) age difference between you and Shady is also showing, because when I read Marie’s prompt to list “old rock n’ roll songs,” my first thought was 50s songs, not 60s songs. Songs of the 60s still somehow seem fresh and new to me as I stay in touch with teenage me. Your list of ten 60s hits includes some of the greatest psychedelic hard rock, British pop-rock & electric blues-rock, Southern blues-rock, California folk-rock and two of the most popular soul nuggets of the 60s, plus Brian Wilson’s breakthrough, highly innovative, multi-layered “Good Vibes” which is in a category of its own. It was a pleasure to listen to these songs again and relive my teenage years.

That picture of the mama cat cuddling with her kitten is so cute… it’s paw-some!

So if I were to pick 10 songs that I consider “old rock n’ roll” – I’d dig deep into the catalogs of artists like Fats Domino, Chuck Berry, Little Richard, Jerry Lee Lewis and Elvis Presley. Off the top of my head, ten of my 50s favorites are “Ain’t It A Shame” (aka “Ain’t That A Shame”), “Maybelline,” “Lucille,” “The Girl Cant Help It,” “Whole Lotta Shakin’ Goin’ On,” “High School Confidential,” “Don’t Be Cruel,” “Too Much,” “All Shook Up” and “Teddy Bear.”

Thanks for the mewsic & memories, dear friend Cathy, and have a super week!

      Tom,

When I was a teenager, we all considered 50s music the oldies and for years I kept that mindset. I decided to go with the 60s since I was born in 1961. You’re right there are a number of songs from the 60s that are new discoveries for me and you have shared a lot of them. Your 10 picks I know and would make a fine “Oldies” playlist. I consider all music prior to the millennium to be some of the best ear candy ever. There hasn’t been too much in the past 21 years that grabs me like the old stuff. Thanks for joining me on the dance floor, my friend.
