Hello Kittens & Pups! This is another mashup edition of three hops rolled into one which means it’s gonna be longer than usual. As you know, I’m simplifying my life with the holidays by trying to not get too overwhelmed with blogging life but I invite you to link up and enjoy the fun. I promise to visit ASAP!
Next up, Wednesday Hodgepodge, a weekly Q&A segment hosted by Joyce. This is a great way to get to know one another better.
1. What takes you out of your comfort zone? At one time I could easily name a few things that I hated the thought of not doing because it meant stepping away from my comfort zone but now…my mind goes blank. Does being in super crowded places count? I really do not like the feeling of being boxed in or my personal space invaded.
2. Your least favorite spice? You’re making this week difficult for me, girl. I’m clueless on what’s my least favorite spice. I keep to the basics and anything that’s different from the norm I only buy if a recipe specifies it or just do without it.
3. What’s a small change you’d like to make? The one small change I’m working on is not eating unnecessary in-between meals. That’s where those unwanted pounds slip up on you and before I know it, I’m in panic mode to shed an extra 5 pounds. The holidays are going to make this really hard but I trying to view this as a positive thing. If I can overwhelm nibbling through the holidays then maybe I won’t have to kill myself after the first to burn off the excess. fingers crossed
4. Do you enjoy visiting historic homes? If so, of the homes you’ve visited which one was your favorite? What historic home near you is open to visitors? Have you been? Southern Living rounded up eleven of the best in the southern part of the US and they’re as follows – Monticello (Jefferson’s home in Virginia), Nathaniel Russel House (Charleston SC), Swan House (Atlanta), Ernest Hemingway’s home (Key West), The Biltmore (Vanderbilt home in Asheville NC), Mount Vernon (Washington’s home in Virgina), San Francisco Plantation (Garyville, Louisiana), Windsor Ruins (Port Gibson Mississippi), Longue Vue House and Gardens (New Orleans), Whitehall (Palm Beach FL), and Pebble Hill Plantation (Thomasville GA) Have you been to any on the list? Of the homes listed which would you most like to visit? First off, of the homes listed in Southern Living the only one we’ve visited is Biltmore Estates. It’s a very impressive, beautiful, victorian home. We were there once at Christmas in the mid-80s (before children) and then again in the spring of 2008. This is my favorite historic home near us. Of the ones listed that I’d like most to see has to be Mount Vernon. That would be awesome! Knoxville has several historic homes. Some, we’ve been to but only from the outside with the exception of Blount Mansion that we toured years ago. There are a others we’ve visited within a short drive outside of Knoxville like Sam Houston Schoolhouse, Davy Crockett Birthplace State Park, Davy Crockett Tavern, and President Andrew Johnson’s home. East Tennessee is a historical hot spot with tons of Civil War trails and homes. I’d love to take time after DH’s eye is completely heal to see more of these places in detail.
5. What’s something you think will be obsolete in ten years? Does that make you sad or glad? I I think CD/DVD players for mewsic or computers are definitely phasing out. I remember the day when I couldn’t think it was possible to not want this technology but with the aging of streaming services for mewsic and movies, as well as software download then it’s not necessary to have the older technology. I’m not sure if it makes me either happy or sad. It’s just a change in how we do things.
6. Insert your own random thought here. I’ll leave you with a burst of late fall colors in our area over the past weeks ago. It was a wonderful surprise. I thought the leaves were just going to dry up and blow away.

I’m here for Skywatch Friday (I think – I am so confused) I love the lighting on the church. AND I didn’t even know there was software you could use to remove power lines. I didn’t know there was such a thing, and I could so, so, so use it. I would take more sunset photos in my neighborhood!!

First, the BotB: Of the three versions, I liked Rumer’s the best. I really liked all three, for different reasons, but I liked Rumer’s sound the best.
I’ve only been to the Biltmore Estate, but we took the deluxe tour that took you into the kitchens, the living quarters, even the basement (which still had the decorations from a party from years before). Especially impressive was the electrical panel (where the fuseboxes were installed and the wires ran to different parts of the house) which was made out of a solid slab of marble.
Love the picture of your church. I have the iPhone 4 and I can’t even upgrade to the latest iOS. Think I might go Android next time…

Biltmore is beautiful. I’d love to go again for Christmas but it’s so darn expensive! I’t an impressive victorian estate. I can’t imagine living like that, can you? Apple’s phones are amazing. My 5s worked great, other than the battery life tapping out but that’s expected with one so old. I’m glad you got to come by to cast your vote. I’ll see ya soon!

I love your pictures and the one with the lights in the parking lot really struck me. I listened to all 3 and it’s not my favourite to listen to but I have to go with One Blood. The first one grated on me after awhile. i felt like the needle kept in place and couldn’t continue on. The 3rd one was ok but the middle one seemed to have to most originality. I am grateful my mom is still around

Wonderful song for Thanksgiving, CATHY!
And what a blast from the past for me!! I always dug this song, but I’ll bet I haven’t heard it since about 1975. This got a lot of airplay on L.A.’s Black radio station K-DAY back in ’74 when it climbed all the way to #4 on the Billboard chart. I’m shocked that several of ya old folks (my age) are saying you weren’t familiar with this song. Where were ya all livin’, under a rock, and avoiding Soul music? HA!-HA!!
I love this song, but I’ll admit I didn’t recognize it immediately when Lady C began her acoustic version of it. It wasn’t until she got to the chorus when my mind went “BINGO!!” — yeah, baby, …”diggin’ the scene with the gangster lean!”
Wow! I never knew who was responsible for this great One-Hit Wonder, I had forgotten all about it. After all, ’74 / ’75 was a long, long time ago, my friend! Thanks so much for reminding me of this song. It took me back to great days so quickly. I gotta send a link to my Brother and see if he remembers it. I’ll bet he does. He knew where K-DAY was on the radio dial. :^D
All 3 versions were good, but I especially liked LADY C’s soulful, Rickie Lee Jones-ish version. That took me back in such a sudden moment that I have to give her my vote. I loved this Battle, CATHY. Thanks!!

In 1974, I was 13 so my mewsic preference would have been The Jackson Fives, The Osmonds, or one of the many other teenie bopper groups of the early 70s. I didn’t listen to a lot of soul. In fact, I think most of my mewsic listening would be whatever the older girls played. I didn’t own much mewsic as a kid. I’m happy that you enjoyed this battle and that it brought back some good memories. While I can’t say I remember this song when it came out, it vaguely seems like I’m might have heard somewhere along the way. Perhaps, on the Soul Train which I watched on occasion. That’s been too many years ago and my memory isn’t the best but it’s not because I’m getting old. I just want to clarify that point. 😀 Anyhow, I got you down for Lady C who is stealing the show!

Your inner crafty self is really going to flip out to learn that Turkey Creek also has a Hobby Lobby. It’s a fabulous area to live near and I’d love it if our next house is minutes from this spot! Plus, DH works near there, too. It’s a total win-win place for us to be! I once thought I had to have a hardcopy of our mewsic and movies but I don’t feel that strongly about it anymore.

Great song choice with the upcoming Thanksgiving holiday. I’m so out of sync with the time of year that it’s barely registering that we’re in holiday mode. I never heard your song choice before and so glad that you’ve introduced me to it.
I LOVE Lady C’s version and she’s getting my vote. Her voice is so powerful that I almost forgot it was an acoustic version (which I normally don’t go for). I guess her voice is plenty musical.
I will say that Rumer came in as a very close second in my opinion. She also has a wonderful voice and I like the musical arrangement. On a different day I may have picked her for my vote, that’s how close they both are as far as my enjoyment goes.
One Blood was okay but just didn’t do it for me. I mean it was good but paled in comparison to the other two. It’ls Lady C for me. 🙂
Not only was a I not familiar with the song, I don’t know any of these artists either.

Steeple churches make me think of those I grew up in which fills me with a sense of comfort. Another thing I like about a church steeple is there’s usually a church bell which I love to hear. There’s a church less than a mile from our house that used to ring theirs but I don’t hear it so much anymore and that makes me sad. I remember the little white church on the hill above my childhood home how they rang the bell calling the community to come worship every Sunday. It made me glad all over!

Hi Cathy; Love the stormy sky in your first pic and also the fall colours. We didn’t have much either this year. Touring historic homes is a favourite pastime for us. Can’t you just picture what life was like for the residents? Kind of a portal to the past. 🙂 Rosehill Manor in upstate New York is the last one we saw. I’m not thrilled with the phasing out of CDs and DVDs, since we have a large library of both. Bad enough when they switched from VHS to DVD! 😮 Oh well, that’s progress. On to your battle…..(I have one up, as well)
This song was new to me, so there aren’t any preconceived biases. BWT, Rumer’s video is not available in Canada. One Blood’s version didn’t appeal to me, but I enjoyed both Lady C and Rumer. After listening to both again, please give my vote to Lady C. Her rendition had a lovely, languid fluidity.

I hear you on digital media. We also have an extensive mewsic and movie library but find that we prefer streaming both more. It’s definitely easier and quicker to find what you want with a few clicks then it is digging it out. I apologize for the trouble with the vides for this round. I fail to check this out every time. I’m glad you found a source to help you make a decision. I definitely agree with you, Lady C style translates relaxation to the listener’s ear which is probably why she’s stealing the show this round. I’ll be over to check out your battle in a few. It’s great to be back among my blog friends. You are my first stop of the day as I return to action.
I want you to know that I saved the fall leaves picture of Fort Loudon Lake and set it as my desktop background. It’s a wonderful scene!
I enjoyed your band battle. It has been quite a few years since I heard William DeVaughn’s hit single “Just Be Thankful.” All three of the competing covers appealed to me and it was difficult for me to decide how to vote. Normally I do not like reggae but, to my surprise, I thoroughly enjoyed the reggae disco style recording by One Blood and I am giving it my vote. I like the rhythm and the full-bodied, deep bottom bass arrangement. Moreover the sassy, street wise vocals are more convincing on this particular song than the vanilla vocals found on the other two recordings. To sum it up the One Blood treatment simply works better than the others in my opinion.

I was just thinking last night that I might find you back today and am happy to that you are back in Blogosphere again.
I’m delighted you liked the photo taken at Fort Loudon. The leaves were so pretty and the wind was blowing on this day. What’s so cool about our iPhone8 is you can take “live” photos which captures movement in your scene, so I can see the leaves falling when I view them on my phone. It creates a movie file, so when I upload it to my computer I can view the “live” shot, too.
I’m glad you enjoyed the three covers of DeVaughn’s song. I like reggae style in small measures but when I was looking for contenders I was hoping that I’d find an artist in this genre. One Blood does a nice job, too. Thanks for voting. I’ll be by to see you next!

Not sure that I’ve heard of this song before. To me, all three started sounding rather identical after the 2 minute mark. The repetitive verse reminded me of the group YES and their inability to end a song – they just go on and on until they finally fade out. Not that this is a bad song, it just gets a bit monotonous after a period of time.
Because they all sounded the same to me, I’m having a difficult time choosing. I think, though, based on the length of time I actually listened to each of them, I’m going to give my vote to Rumer.

You’re right all three artists are very similar, especially in the opening but it’s their styles that separate them and it’s going to be a matter of what suits the listeners ear the most. Rumer has nice soft contemporary sound. I’m not sure which lady will steal my vote yet but after a few more listens I’m sure I’ll figure it out. 😉

First on the historic homes: I’ve been in several in my travels. One of my favorites was the homestead of S.P. Dinsmoor in Lucas, Kansas. He’d hand built his home when he was about 70 years old out of limestone logs back in 1880 or so. No window or door was the same size. He had constructed scenes from the Bible out of concrete throughout his yard. At the end of the tour you could view his mummified body in the obelisk crypt that he had built for that purpose. It’s all very weird, creepy, and wonderful at the same time.
As to BOTB, I didn’t recognize this song at all. It’s a nice one and appropriate for the season.
Every version is excellent. But let me give my vote to the first cut, Lady C–it was really in the groove.

The homestead in Kansas sounds interesting. Someone was telling us about a home built of limestone in Arkansas if I’m not mistaken. That would be really creepy to see a mummified body. I wonder what possessed him to decide to be buried this way.
William DeVaughn’s song is new-to-me, too. I liked the lyrics sentiments and his R&B vibes, so went with it. Lady C has a very laid back soulfulness in her recording and the simplicity of the guitar really suited her style. I have your vote recorded. Thanks for stopping by to play along!
