#WW Lake Lure Inn

Hello, kittens & dawgs! It’s hump-day again and as the old saying goes, it’s all down here the rest of the way. I’m ready to slide right into Friday, aren’t  you?

Last week, #WW Bicyclist post I promised another sneak peek of Lake Lure, North Carolina.

The prime focus in this little mountain community is Lake Lure and the inn. It’s an excellent place to enjoy outdoor activities like hiking, rock climbing, horseback riding, water sports, boat tours, and golfing or if you like to a slower pace then there are places to shop, eat, and be pampered. But what you may not know is this is one of the filming sites of the 1987 global movie sensation Dirty Dancing.

Believe it or not, I have not seen the movie in its entirety, but hope to correct that soon. It’s available for streaming from Netflix.

I am not an expert on the movie and came across Dirty Dancing Filming Locations, Then and Now with history on the scene shots from Lake Lure. What really sounds like loads of fun is the annual The Dirty Dancing Festival set this year for August 14th – 15th. This would be cool to attend, don’t you think? An interesting thing I found out is that part of the ticket proceeds go to a worthy cause: Pancreatic Cancer Action Network (PANCAN). My previous GI doctor passed suddenly from this disease.

Anywho, we had a beautiful time in Lake Lure. I’m looking forward to another photo-op in the area. It’s a lovely get-away spot to escape the daily grind of things! Now, let’s give a soft round of applauds and cheers to this week’s featured photographer.

Time Out For Mom!!

I invite you to show some blog love by visiting Les today and leave a few sweet words. Don’t forget to link up!

To round things off, you can listen to the complete Dirty Dancing soundtrack while visiting a few of these #WW communities this morning.

Thank you for stopping by.

The movie was filmed at the Boys camp called Camp Chimney Rock, that USED to be on Lake Lure, the Lake Lure Inn, itself, was not in the movie. Mountain Lake Hotel in VA was. All the filming locations in NC are gone except for some stairs and some foundations due to a fire that burned the camp down and then the land got sold to build a private neighborhood. If you do a boat tour around Lake Lure, they point out sites that were in the film. There also used to be the Girl scout Camp, Camp Occoneechee, not far (about 15 minutes) from Lake Lure where Patrick Swazye and Jennifer Grey practiced a bunch and where they stayed at night when not filming. That camp too has been sold but is still intact on Girls Camp Rd.

Angela, Thank you for the history behind the filming of Dirty Dancing. I thought I read somewhere that Lake Lure Inn was in the movie. I think I remember reading about a fire destroying much of the original filming sites, though. I’m going to look Mountain Lake Hotel up to see how far it is from us. I loved reading the details you provided. Please visit again!

Oh wow…..my dad was born and raised in Bat Cave (He went in the cave as a kid)…Family land included the waterfall to the right of Chimney Rock. Daddy’s home is still standing across from the fire station. He even has a picture of Lake Lure BEFORE it was a lake. They clear cut the entire area. The picture he has is of a single house, sitting alone where the lake would fill in. They moved the house and created the lake.

I grew up going through Lake Lure to get to my grandparent’s house back in the 60’s. Never would we have guessed it would end up as a nice resort!

Yes, I believe I read somewhere that part of the Country Club scenes were shot at Lake Lure Inn. It really is a pretty spot. BTW, the cats in my WW button aren’t mine. In fact, I don’t have any. I love cats, but my allergies won’t permit me to have them. 🙁 Thanks for stopping by. Next stop your place!

We often times miss the best movies (reruns) on broadcast TV, but then again I hate to lock myself into watching something where I can’t hit pause. lol Thank God for internet streaming!

Claudia, I tend to forget about places. DH said we visited the area many years ago, but I swear I don’t remember! It had to be during the years when one of the kids was a baby or something because I can attest to black holes in my memory during each of our kids early months outside the womb. That’s just one of the side effects of motherhood you gotta accept. lol

Whao.. it must be really need to visit that place. I saw the show Dirty Dancing once but I didn’t recognise the picture as where it was filmed.

Marie, it’s a gorgeous little spot nestled in the western mountains of North Carolina. Lake Lure is about half an hour to 45 minutes from Asheville (home to Biltmore Estate). I was surprised to learn The Last Mohicans was filmed in Chimney Rock (next door to Lake Lure). I plan to share a few shots I took there in the next few weeks. It’s SO interesting when we stumble upon cool stuff like this and am always in awe to find it out. Thanks for visiting!

“Lake Lure” is a very attractive name, and it looks like a beautiful place.
I’ve never heard of “Dirty Dancing” before…

Romi, Dirty Dancing is probably the most recognizable movie starring Patrick Swayze. Do you know who he is? You shouldn’t have any trouble finding a trailer to the movie online to watch. The movie does have some fabulous music, so that in itself makes it worth the while to see. 😉 Thanks for stopping by!

Passed through Lake Lure many many times over the years but don’t recall ever stopping there. It’s a beautiful area. I’ve never seen Dirty Dancing either, but I guess my sister and mother watched it enough times for all of us. They loved that movie.

Lee, I always think of such movies as “Chick Flicks” and use to veer far away from them, but over the last several years I am more inclined to try out said “Chick Flicks” and have found that some are great for couples to enjoy. The movie has some really good music. We will watch it sometime soon and I hope to share my thoughts on it here. Thanks for stopping by!

When I first saw the picture, I actually thought: THAT looks like the Inn from Dirty Dancing!! Because I have seen that movie — many many times!! I even saw a live show of Dirty Dancing at Radio City Music Hall way way way back. Anytime I say something really stupid, I still mutter under my breath “I carried a watermelon.” LOL you’ll get that once you watch it.

but it really is a beautiful place.
