WSC, Road Trip #6 News, & More

Earlier this morning, my BOTB showdown for published for those interested in voting and if you don’t know what that is, then I encourage you click over there to pick your favorite cover artist in today’s battle.

Speaking of music, I’m joining Mary for this week’s WSC. Her prompts are Songs that include a Flower in the Title, a Type of Coin in the Title, and an Occupation in the Title. I use three covers of three well-known songs: Edelweiss written for the 1959 Rogers and Hammerstein Broadway Musical The Sound of Music which became a film in 1965. Christopher Plumber sang the song and recorded on TSoM soundtrack. Pennies from Heaven is a really old song dating back to 1936 and performed by Bing Crosby in the film of the same name. Please, Mr. Postman was a number 1 hit by the 1961 Motown girl band, the Marvelettes off of their debut album bearing the same name. Today’s line up for these oldies I’m using cover artist versions.

WSC playlist: 1. Edelweiss ~Anre Rieu 2. Pennies from Heaven ~Paul Anka 3. Please, Mr. Postman ~Carpenters

What song titles would you pick for these prompts?

Here are my responses to Joyce’s Wednesday Hodgepodge questions this week.

1. As we begin this brand new month tell us, on a scale of 1-10, where does your life fall in terms of being in ‘apple pie order’? Please elaborate. (1=nowhere near it, 10=practically perfect in every way)  I almost went with “nowhere near it” and that’s pretty much how my life outside of blogging feels but I have a good grip on what I do in Blogosphere regardless of my fussing that might indicate otherwise.  However, I’m not “practically perfect” in it, either. I’d say my life away from blogging is a 6 and my blogging life is 9 or maybe I’m over confident with my achievements and am blinded from the real truth. What do you think?

2. An apple a day keeps the doctor away…are you doing your part? Red or green? Sweet or tart? Ever played the game Apples to Apples? Do you like apple pie? If so, ala mode or just gimme the pie? I prefer red to green but my favorite is yellow which goes without saying I like sweet apples to tart.  I’m not sure if I’ve played Apples to Apples.  It seems like I have but if I did then it was a long time ago.  Do I like apple pie?  Of course, I do!  Oh, I can eat apple pie with or without ice cream. I’m not basis in the least so bring it on!

3. Tell us about a time recently where you ‘upset the apple cart’ or the last time someone ‘upset your apple cart’? I don’t think I or anyone has “upset the apple cart”, except for the creators of this Covid virus that has wrecked all of our lives.  We have put our lives nearly on hold to do certain things but you know we’re at the breaking point of saying enough is enough!

4. What are three words that come to mind when you think of September? Fall, leaves, & spice.

5. What are you most looking forward to this month? Autumn’s official start.  Our temps probably won’t be cool enough by then but some change will be felt and it’s knowing things will continue feel fall-like as we move into October.

6. Insert your own random thought here It’s check-in time once more to see how things are going in my 2021 A to Z Challenge Road Trips.  I continue to make slow progression in my visits but it’s better than giving up altogether, I suppose.  I’m determined to see myself through the process since I failed so miserably in April to stay on top of the game.

Road Trip #6

This time, I had the pleasure to catch up with Trudy at Reel Focus.  Her theme for April was Movies Reflect Human Needs.  I couldn’t imagine how she would pull this off but she did a stand up job going through the alphabet using keywords like creativity, empathy, humor, and nourishment to name a few.  Each post she wrote briefly on the “human need” often providing a quote on the topic and then listing a number of movies that fall in-line with her daily conversation.  This proved to be an interesting series and was well written.  Being a movie buff I found the plethora of films Trudy dished up an added bonus but then what would you expect from someone who’s blog is titled “Reel Focus”, right?  It’s neat to point out that Miss Trudy is a screenwriter and is an even bigger movie watcher than me.  Here’s a list of April posts.

More A2Z Looney Tune sketches in color:

A look through my archives I found this photo I took with an android phone I used on a day outing. It did a fine job capturing downtown Knoxville. I opted to convert the color image to a black and white photo. It seemed to suit the dreary rainy September morning in which I captured the moment.

You’re invited to join the self-promoting party where just about anything goes on Wild Wednesdays!

Yah…pretty much done with all that’s been going on. Ugghh. Great answers. I like sweet apples just to eat and a more tart apple in a pie.

I loved listening to Andre, Cathy, and thank you for sharing. The photo of Knoxville is very cool and sets the mood for a good mystery story for those that like to write stories. Love your answers to the questions and have a great day! ❤️

It’s interesting when I played with that photo it really didn’t say a lot to me. It definitely wasn’t anything too special as a color image but subtracting the that away from the picture made a huge improvement and apparently one that others really love, more so than I thought. Thanks for the visit, my dear!

    Hi Cathy!
It’s late, but I’m here! Are we sure today isn’t Friday? Is sure feels like it to me. I love your choices for this week’s WSC. I also enjoyed hearing Tom’s choices, as well as everyone elses. Sure do appreciate you joining in!

  • 15andmeowing

Nice music choices. I like your drawings too. And I always enjoy learning more about you through the questions. XO

  • Birgit

Oh I love Andre Rieu and my mom used to say that was her boyfriend. I have been lucky to see him twice and it really is worth to see him live. I enjoyed the other 2 songs as well and didn’t know The Carpenters did a version of this song. I really liked it. I love your Porky Pig drawing and your photo…I thought you took that from Life Magazine or something. It looks like it is from the 1950s. I love it. I am not much into pies. My dad loved apple pie with chedder! He grew up a bit north of Algonquin Park and they have tastes like the Quebecqois. The Quebec people have it with chedder cheese. ..ice cream too. I love golden Delicious and like a bit of tartness. My life is on a 2 or so right now. Last week…Tuesday became reality when I found out my full hysterectomy is happening on Oct.12th. Wed, I texted my niece to see how she is doing and wanted to talk with her. She told me she doesn’t want to talk to me. She has found that, in every single conversation, I am very judgemental and insensitive and she has had to hold back her tongue many times and needs her space. Needless to say I was devastated. The next day, my hubby was writing in pain. It subsided but by Saturday night he went to the hospital and has been there ever since. He has a kidney stone and they need to do a laser surgery on him. I wish he could get it done but emergency cases come in and he is bumped. I am exhausted.

      Birgit,

I’m tickled you thought my photo was from Life Magazine. B&W is a fabulous way to make artsy photo. I like eating cheddar cheese with apples but never had it with pie. I guess that could be good. I know you’re eager to get the hysterectomy done and that behind you. Just take it easy afterwards. Young people don’t understand that the adults in their lives love them and want what’s best for them. Hopefully in time your niece will come to see that’s all you want for her and that her interpretation was colored emotions. Gee, I’m sorry to hear your husband is in horrible pain. I’ve heard kidney stones are awful. I pray he is able to get this taken care of soon for both of your sakes. Thanks for visiting, my dear!

    Hi, again, Cathy!

As promised, I am back from my doctor appointment and eager to check out your second post. This Wild and Almost Wordless Wednesday amounts to a “perfect storm” on the blog circuit, because multiple hops are taking place at the same time: the BOTB, the WSC and the IWSG – Insecure Writer’s Support Group – which meets the first Wednesday of every month. Plus, I had that pesky dr. appointment right in the middle of the chaos.

I already busted my brain on the WSC at BB’s, but I’d like to challenge myself again and come up with three more song titles in support of your participation. Regarding your choices, “Edelweiss” is a brilliant pick, and you should get extra credit for coming up with it. The violin playing of Anre Rieu made me weep as he played the tune on that Alpine hillside flanked by a group of musicians including other violinists, cellists and flautists. It is a beautiful, calming piece.

Many artists have recorded the 1936 song “Pennies From Heaven,” but I don’t think I ever heard Paul Anka’s rendition. I enjoyed it. It’s another great choice for this challenge.

The Carpenters recorded a good number of covers that rivaled or perhaps surpassed the originals. “Please, Mr. Postman” is one of my favorites by the sibling duo, and another great selection.

    HERE ARE MY PICKS:

FLOWER SONG: “Yellow Rose of Texas,” an adaptation of an old Civil War campfire song, recorded by Mitch Miller in 1955. When I was little, there were two things I could count on doing every week: watching the Mitch Miller music variety TV show with my folks, and going with them to the stock car (dirt track) races every weekend. In July, 1955, Mitch Miller’s version of “Yellow Rose Of Texas” started climbing the chart on its way to a #1 finish on the pop chart. Whenever I hear Mitch’s recording of “Yellow Rose,” I am reminded that the song was played at the racetrack (Susquehanna Speedway) over the P.A. system every weekend of July and August, 1955, when I went there with my family. The song was blasted over the loudspeakers as spectators arrived at the track and found seats in the bleachers.

COIN SONG: “Jimmy Had A Nickel.” This is another song that takes me all the way back to that same period, my childhood in the mid 50s, when I watched the “Our Gang” aka “The Little Rascals” comedy shorts on TV every afternoon. I found this clip of the song being performed in one of the episodes. I haven’t seen it in more than 65 years, and I have you to thank for making me put on my thinking cap and come up with a coin song that is seldom heard today:

OCCUPATION SONG: “When I Kissed The Teacher” by ABBA, the opening song on the Swedish pop group’s 1976 album Arrival. Four years earlier, The Police had scored a hit with a song that has a similar theme, “Don’t Stand So Close To Me,” which referenced the taboo attraction between teacher and student. ABBA’s song took a more lighthearted approach, and the music video for the song is more humorous than suggestive of wrongdoing.

I read and enjoyed your Wednesday Hodgepodge fill-ins. As bloggers go, I’d say you are at least a 9, Cathy. You present material that consistently interests me, and you are a faithful friend who seems to take genuine interest in what I am doing on my site and one who leaves high quality comments, comments with substance that enable me to expand the discussion thread. To me, that’s blogging at its best. You are a leader.

I’m delighted to be seeing a second Looney Tunes character here at CAAC today. I’ll bet Porky wondered why there was a typo on that sign on the tree. He would have spelled it “Wabbit.” 🙂 I don’t think I ever saw a picture of downtown Knoxville before. It was a cool idea to transform the image to B&W because, at first glance, it looks like an historic photo that was perhaps taken in the 1940s or 50s. It isn’t until one looks closely at the vehicles on the street that it can be recognized as a recent picture.

Whenever you have more than one post running per day. don’t be afraid to come to Shady’s and poke me as you did this morning, otherwise I might miss it.

Enjoy the rest of your day, dear friend Cathy. I wish you all the best during the month of September!

    • Cathy Kennedy

      Tom,

Welcome back, my friend! I hope your doctor appointment went without a hitch and you got a clean bill of health. Goodness sakes, you came up with some excellent song titles. I don’t know you do it. Please, tell me you cheat asking for Google’s advice? My mind frequently goes blank but when I get to poking around I tend to go with the first song that catches my eye and then I look for cover artists with the hope of doing something different from others. “Jimmy Had a Nickel” is new-to-me. I enjoyed the video clip you shared of I’m assuming two members of the Little Rascals gang. Those little girls are just darlin’! You’re not going to believe this but I don’t remember ABBA’s song “When I Kissed the Teacher”. Did this song chart in the US? ABBA was a music force to reckon with in their day. I really hated when they broke up. It certainly is a busy day in Blogosphere. Thanks for your return visit and I hope you enjoy the rest of the day!

      • Thomas Anderson

Yessum, it was a routine doctor visit. Thank you! To answer your question, no, I didn’t cheat on the WSG here at CAAC or at Birgit’s. To rack my brains and come up with three additional songs for your challenge, I had time on the way to and from the doctor and in the waiting room, and the titles somehow came to me. I think it’s a good anti-aging exercise to test your memory like this, especially when you are in your 70s and beyond.

I thought you’d appreciate those little girls in Our Gang/Little Rascals singing “Jimmy Had A Nickel.” When I posted that clip, I thought to myself, “Those cuties are going to remind Cathy of her precious LA.” The ABBA song “When I Kissed The Teacher” was not released as a single in the U.S., but I’ve had fun watching the official mewsic video for years. You can find it all over Y/T. In 2018, the cast of the jukebox mewsical ABBA tribute movie Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again released their version of “Kissed The Teacher” as a single and it charted across Europe. Here is a clip of their performance of it in the movie. The lead vocals are done by Lily James, star of Downton Abbey and The Beatles tribute film Yesterday:

(Start playing video at 1:17 for the beginning of the song.)

Thanks again for your friendship and support, dear friend Cathy!

        • Cathy Kennedy

          Tom,

I’m tickled to know your appointment did indeed go well. I try to find ways to exercise my brain but unfortunately song titles or the artists isn’t my strong suit mostly because in the early years I didn’t place a lot of importance on who did what except for groups I was really dialed into. You’re a sharp fella to come up with song titles without sneaking a peek. You marvel my brain! Those little girls do remind me a bit of my LA. She’s a little sweetheart and just as cute as her mama. It’s amazing how much she looks like her and naturally my mind is taken back to DD#1 childhood. Thanks for sharing the cover song from the movie Mamma Mia. What fun!

It’s nice to see you back in the HP! I didn’t do as much hopping around in the A-Z this year as I normally do, but considered it a win that I made it through the alphabet : ) Have a nice week!

    • Cathy Kennedy

      Joyce,

I normally don’t do a lot of hopping in the A2Z challenge. I tend to do return visits but rarely seek out new blogs to read and that keeps me plenty busy. This year, I had trouble keeping up with visiting those who stopped by and am trying to make amends now. Thanks for popping over, my dear!

  • Thomas Anderson

    Hi, Cathy!

I saw your new comment at Shady’s Place and jumped over here to your second post. I’ll need to report back later, because I have a doctor appointment this morning and I need to shut down and get ready to leave. I promise I’ll be back to reply to your comment on my site and read this post and take the WSC with you. See you later today, dear friend!

    • Cathy Kennedy

      Tom,

That’s fine. My blog door is always open to a friend. I certainly didn’t mean for you to rush over here but appreciated your enthusiasm all the same. I hope things go well with your doctor appointment. TTFN, my good friend!

  • Sandee

I love Andre. So talented. Wonderful playlist.

    Love the Q & A. I like your answers. We’re much alike.

    Oh your sketches are fabulous.

Love the black and white photography. When I was little there was only black and white photography.

Thank you for joining the Wordless Wednesday Blog Hop.

Have a fabulous Wordless Wednesday. Love and hugs. ♥

    • Cathy Kennedy

      Sandee,

Andre is talented and a joy to listen to no matter what he’s playing. Yes, I think we’re very much alike. It’s interesting to think about how there was only black and white film and nowadays it’s a form of art expression. lol Thanks for joining me today!

    • Cathy Kennedy

      Libby,

It was a dreary rainy day when I snapped that picture but it was mid September 2018. That was the first time I had walked along Gay Street in downtown Knoxville in years. In the early 80s I worked on Gay Street and DH was employed at TVA downtown, too. We were able to drive to and from work together each day. Nowadays, he’s working from home so that’s really nice. Thanks for dropping by!
