Whatcha See Is Whatcha Get #BOTB

It’s round 2 of BoTB. I’m gonna keep it short and sweet. While listening to iTunes radio, I was reminded recently of a forgotten song from the 60s R&B era by The Dramatics with their Top 10 Pop Hit, Whatcha See is Whatcha Get.

You know whatcha gotta do? You gotta pick your favorite artist after listening to the same tune. There is no wrong or right vote, except one that isn’t cast.  This all about the fun, kittens & dawgs. So relax and enjoy!

    I enjoyed Hall and Oates. They seemed to do more with the song. It was more inventive and fun to listen to

    I hate to vote against Hall & Oates, but The Beautiful South had me swinging from the first notes. This is one of my favorite songs from the early ’70’s, and I think TBS caught the feeling of the time better.

    Hello, CATHY ~
    I really, really loved the version by ‘THE BEAUTIFUL SOUTH’. Nice, smooth Jazz groove with good vocals, some nice horn and flute work, too. In fact, I instantly liked their cover better’n the original by The Dramatics, which I’ve heard many, many times.

    The Hall & Oates version wasn’t bad, but it was rougher, and I thought that cool Jazz approach was just perfect for this song! I listened to it a second time, after casting my vote, just for the pure pleasure of it. I may have to check out more stuffs by The Beautiful South to see if they always sound this good.

    Good Battle though, because both competitors are scoring votes and it looks like this one could go either way.

    Wowza, Cathy! Nobody beats the Dramatics on this tune! Ouch, ouch, what a choice. I’m going with The Beautiful South… love the flute solo and they didn’t drag it out as much as Hall and Oats… even though I’m a H&O fan.

    The Beautiful South for me, thank you. Tough battle, lady!

    Oh my! My teenaged heart just fell in puppy love all over again for Hall and Oats. Oh pitter patter 🙂

    Much as I’d like to vote for them, just out of loyalty, I’m giving my vote to Beautiful South. More for the bluesy-big band style than the singing though. Both were excellent, well matched.

      Donna, You just gotta go with the way a song moves you, instead of listening to your puppy-love stricken heart sometimes. Another vote goes to Beautiful South!

    I came in expecting to vote Hall & Oates. I’ve liked them for a LONG time. Turns out, I wasn’t all that bowled over by their take on this song. I actually preferred The Beautiful South (a completely new-to-me group). I guess that only goes to show that you can like a band and still vote against ’em in the end!

      Robin, I’m a huge fan of Hall & Oates, but The Beautiful South (also new-to-me) really shine more so than H&O. It’s amazing when this stumble upon the unexpected. One more vote for TBS!

      Callie, SO sorry you have the flu. This isn’t the best time to be getting sick with the kids getting out of school. You are in my thoughts & prayers, dearie! Thanks for fixing my link. I did a data transfer from my old blog to here. So, everything is pretty much as it was before, other than the cosmetics and address change. I like using WP. It’s a blog platform.       Callie, The Dramatics ARE the best choice, but they aren’t included in the BOTB showdown. I did not say this, like I normally do, but the voting options do not list The Dramatics as a possibility. You may have overlooked the survey to click either Hall & Oates or The Beautiful South. I appreciate you voting all the same, unfortunately it doesn’t count. 🙁

    When I saw Hall & Oates performed this song I was afraid I was going to be prejudiced in favour of them. Turns out, I actually like the Beautiful South version better. Sounded better and felt ‘right’.

      Jeffrey, these battles can really fool you. I’ve done the same thing a time or two thinking going into a show-down only to vote the other way. I like being surprised like that it, as that’s part of the fun of the competition. Great to have your visit!

    I like Hall & Oates but I’m giving this one to The Beautiful South. I just liked their sound better. I liked Hall & Oates version for sure but I guess I liked The Beautiful South because they were new to me and I liked the vocals better.

      Michele, I can’t believe how the voting is going. I figured H&O would do better than they are and although I haven’t actually looked at the numbers it seems the newcomers are edging H&O.

    I too am a Hall and Oats fan but actually went with Beautiful South. I liked the smoothness of it, yet still funky sound. I think the other had too much deep beat for me. Weird!

      Michelle, you know I never really thought about how deep the beat is until you mentioned it. I went back for another listen and I think it’s a bit of an overkill. I’m wondering, if this is turning ears off? Oh well…thanks for voting. TBS scores again!

    A very hard choice for me because I didn’t like either very much! But I voted for Hall and Oats, mostly because I liked the intro well enough.

    Hi, dear Cathy! Holy crap! This is an inspired BOTB contest. You found two excellent renditions of “Whatcha See…” originally by the Dramatics. It’s an old favorite that I haven’t heard for many years. I hesitate to call it the new definitive, but I give my vote to the version by The Beautiful South. I love their smooth, soulful male and female vocalists and the backing of that fine horn band. To me the Hall and Oates version was overwrought and not quite as good.

    I’m happy to see that Jasmine Thompson won the first BOTB of June. She’s terrific!

      Shady, absolutely we’ll stay friends for a long as time stands. I’m glad you liked my pair up for this edition of BOTB. I’m not heavy into music like yourself or many of the other regulars here. I just go by what song moves me. Sometime I don’t know why I like or don’t like a song. I just let it speak to my heart and that’s how I know if it’s a winner (at least with me). Thanks for coming by & voting!

    I like the original too but out of the two it has to be Hall & Oats it has more punch to it than The Beautiful South version they are are good band though I used to like them a lot 🙂

    To be honest, I like the original best, but between the two selections offered, I surprised myself and picked Hall & Oates. They just sounded better to me. It was a surprise, because I’ve never been a fan of theirs. 🙂 Interesting battle! Have a great week.

      Debbie, I agree, The Dramatics’ original is the best and it was tough finding two bands that did this song that I actually liked well enough to display on the BOTB platform. Oh well…it’s interesting to see how folks vote. There’s no right or wrong way. I’m glad that H&O surprised you. I have always been a fan of theirs.

    I don’t remember that song, but I remember that catch phrase. Where did that come from anyway? It sounds like something they might have said on Laugh In.

    Both versions are quite good. The version by Beautiful South definitely has a cool groove to it, but maybe a bit too slick.

    The Hall & Oates version has a funky vibe like the song cries out for. Besides, I’m a big Hall and Oates fan.

    And those are the reasons that my vote goes to Hall & Oates.

      Lee, I don’t know where the phrase come from, but it feels right for the 60s generation. I haven’t thought about Laugh In in a long time. I really enjoyed those 60s & 70s variety shows ~ good comedy and entertainment! I’m a big Hall & Oates fan, too. Thanks for voting!
