Thursday Movie Picks

#TMP – Televised Edition: Superheroes/Super Powers

I’m playing along with TMP again and if you’re interested the rules are simple; base on the theme of the week pick three to five movies and tell us why you picked them, then link up with Wandering through the Shelves. This week’s movie theme is Television Edition: Superheroes/Super Powers.

Perhaps my picks are a bit on the far reach side when you think of Superheroes/Super Powers but these series definitely fall into this category I think. My first selection is the short run series

My first selection is the short run series The 4400.  In the pilot, scientist track what appears to be a comet on a collision course with earth but when more than 4000 missing people step out of that bright light, the government is mystified with their whereabouts and how they might be infected. It’s up to special agents Diana Skouris (Jacqueline McKenzie) and Tom Baldwin (Joel Gretsch ) to unravel the secrets of each returnee.

This is a series we really enjoyed and hated it came to an end.  We hoped it someone would reboot the series but that has yet to happen.  The 4400 is currently on Netflix.

Haven is another unlikely series to fall in the Super Powers prompt but why not go with it.  Haven Maine is a quaint coastal community where things aren’t always what they seem. Some of the folks in this tiny town are afflicted with “Troubles”; some call curse and others benefit from them.  Special FBI agent, Audrey Parker (Emily Rose) shows up on in Haven tracking a lead when she gets tangled in Haven’s weirdness with HPD Nathan Wuornos (Lucas Bryant).

We got tangled in this series. It’s one of our all-time favorites. We watched the shows last episode last night. The producers brought it to an end for some reason but it was great! Perhaps rating dropped. I don’t know but I’m hoping for a spin-off. cross fingers  You can watch all the complete series on Netflix!

For my last pick, I decided to pull something from long ago past. If I were a guy then some might think I’m a sexist with my selection and some women might think it’s degrading but I say is, “Oh, poppycock!” One of my favorite childhood Superheros series from 1975, Wonder Woman starring Linda Carter.  It’s been too long ago to remember much about the show other than I liked it. Here’s what IMDB says:

During World War II, a plane piloted by Major Steve Trevor crashes near Paradise Island, the secret hidden island home of the mighty and eternally young Amazons. He is rescued by Princess Diana, who learns of the war against the Nazis. The Amazons decide to send one of their own to help fight in this crisis. Although forbidden to participate in the selection process, Diana joins secretly and wins the right and responsibility to go. Taking the still unconscious Major to safety, she joins him as Yeoman Diana Prince. Furthermore, when the forces of evil threaten the nation, Diana would spin to transform into Wonder Woman, armed with a magic belt giving her tremendous strength, bracelets that can stop any bullet, a tiara that can be thrown as a returning weapon and an unbreakable magic lasso that can force anyone to tell the truth. After WW II, she returned to the Island, only to encounter Steve Trevor Jr., agent for IADC, thirty years later. Seeing the amazing coincidence as a sign, she returns to the Man world once more to resume her role as the greatest of the female superheroes.

Wonder Woman is totally patriotic in her red, white, and blue outfit! We need more super heroines like this Wonder Woman today! 🙂

Winding things down, I wanted to point out I have a movie giveaway going on, here, if you’re interested.  However, I’m not sure if it’s open worldwide. It may only be good for the US. I never got a response from the sponsor. I just wanted y’all to know. No worries if you don’t want to play along. 🙂

I’ll be back tomorrow with multiple posts filled with a lot of fun. There’s something for everyone photography (Skywatch Friday), blessings (Celebrate the Small Things), Friendly fill-ins, and lots of laughs (Friday Sillies) and I hope  you join me!

A couple of inspired picks. I’ve never even heard of Haven. Sounds interesting, though. We have a match on Wonder Woman, except I picked it for rather shallow reasoning. I’m okay with anyone calling me on it.

Well now I am going to HAVE to check out HAVEN as it is a little known fact that Haven is my maiden name!
    Thanks for sharing!

Love that you picked Wonder Woman! I almost went with her myself even though it’s so campy but she always got the guy out of trouble instead of the other way around. I always wanted to see the 4400 but never got a chance nor Haven. My hubby is not much into those shows so it’s hard to watch plus I don’t get Netflix or HBO so if any show is on those channels, I miss them.

Birgit, Many of those older programs are a bit campy but that’s part of the appeal. 🙂 Haven is a Syfy series. Unfortunately, I’m not sure where you can watch all the episodes online at no cost. The 4400 is currently available on Netflix. Have you tried YouTube? Sometimes you can find free TV/Movie content to stream. Does your husband like X-Files? If so, then he’ll like Haven and The 4400.

I’ve only seen Wonder Woman of your picks. I was never a huge fan but would catch it from time to time and I do remember Debra Winger as her sister, which of course is a hoot now. I’ve heard of the other two but haven’t watched.

This was a tough week for me, I’ve never been much of a devotee to superhero series but came up with three that I’d watch occasionally.

The Tick (1994-1996)-Ridiculously amusing animated series about a somewhat thick superhero clad in a bright blue costume along with his moth costume wearing sidekick Arthur, who has a wry, patient attitude with his often lunk-headed compatriot fights the bad guys in “The City”. They blunder about but still somehow manage to say the day. What else is there to say about a superhero whose call to arms is “SPOON!”

The Flash (1990-1991)-When Barry Allen (John Wesley Shipp), a forensic police scientist, suffers a freak accident being struck by lightning and covered in chemicals at the same time a chain reaction occurs giving him super human powers and the ability to move at the speed of sound. While learning how to control his new found powers a calamity occurs which sets him on the path to be the protector of the good people of Central City. Short-lived series had a nice sense of humor mixed in with its action sequences.

The Greatest American Hero (1981-1983)-After a chance encounter with aliens in the desert late at night where he is gifted with a magical red suit high school teacher Ralph Hinkley (William Katt) along with fellow witness FBI man Bill Maxwell (Robert Culp) attempt to fight crime using the suit’s powers. A couple of problems present themselves right away, Ralph and Bill are a silk and sandpaper match and even more troubling the pair have lost the instructions for the suit so they have to puzzle out how it works as they go along leading to trouble and a lot of bruises for Ralph. Engagingly played by Katt & Culp along with Connie Sellecca as Ralph’s girlfriend Pam.

Joel, I don’t remember Debra Winger being Linda Carter’s sister. That’s just been too many years ago and I was young. Of your picks, The Greatest American Hero was one I watched as a kid. I loved the theme mewsic! Thanks for visiting & have a good weekend!

Annie, we can never get enough “real” heroes. I think of our fine men and women in blue, firefighters, EMT personnel, and our servicemen/women who all are excellent, brave, and selfless individuals who deserve more credit than they get.

I haven’t seen any of your picks, but I’ve heard of Haven because a former wrestler I used to love (Edge/Adam Copeland) guest starred on it. lol

  • Thomas Anderson

    Hi, Cathy!

I was lookin’ for you this morning but didn’t see a post. I’m glad I didn’t miss this one because I picked up another recommended TV series from you – Haven. Based on your description and the trailer it looks like my kind of show, and I have come to completely trust your taste in entertainment. I will mention Haven to Mrs. Shady and hope I can sell her on the idea of giving it a try.

I am also very happy to know that you are a fan of The 4400. It’s a wonderful series! I watched it in its entirety a couple of years ago. It is loaded with fine actors and it kept me on the edge of my seat from start to finish. I have appreciated Billy Campbell’s acting ever since he was a regular on Once and Again, and I have loved Aussie actress Jacqueline McKenzie ever since her performance in Under the Lighthouse Dancing with another of my favorites, Naomi Watts.

As much as I love most superhero series, I never got into Wonder Woman. I suppose Jessica Jones is the modern day equivalent.

Thanks for another interesting post, dear friend Cathy. I hope your symptoms are clearing up and that you are feeling better today. See you soon!

Tom, Thank you for popping by to check out my TMP. I have this series set to go live at noon since the linky isn’t open until then. Hopefully, this will help me to visit the host site when my post is active. You and Mrs. Shady will like Haven. This series gave me a bit of an X-Files sense and with the show set in a fictitious small Maine harbor town then naturally it reeled me in the first time. I’d love to see a reboot series of The 4400 but there are a lot of similar shows where the characters have special abilities that the return of this program probably will not happen. We have Jessica Jones in our Netflix cue. We’ll eventually get around to seeing it. Today, we got some good news. DH’s employer offered him full-time employment starting Mar. 6th and we’re thrilled. God is so good! Have a good evening, my friend!
