Thursday2Q: Appliance Brands/Buying Factors
Howdy, Kittens & Dawgs! This morning’s artist popped up on my radar when I stumbled upon this song from her début album, Unbreakable Smile (2015). Tori has recorded mewsic on YouTube since she was 14 and was even a contestant on American Idol season 9. I won’t sugar coat it, she has talent but her vocal style only shines in some of her songs and she has a horrible habit of not saying her words completely. Yeah, it’s a trend in mewsic style but I don’t have to like it. Anywho, she does a beautiful job covering the Disney’s song, Colors of the Wind with a softness to her voice that made it soooo sweet and pleasant to my ear. Last week’s 5 goals didn’t work out quite as well as hoped. Life threw a wrench in my plans. The Sunday before last, one of our refrigerators finally bit the dust. What’s the world coming to when a major appliance nearly 50 years old dies? 🙂 I’m not complaining. In fact, I can not believe that old gal stood reliable all these years. This thing was in the house when we moved here in 1980. We bought a second refrigerator around the time DS was a year old and that thing has given us nothing but trouble from day one. Not to mention, I’m certain it’s on its last leg. I just hope it can hold off until we find a replacement for frig #1 which brings me to why my goals fell apart last week. I was absorbed in research for repair possibilities while looking for a new unit. I’m still looking but this week, I’m doing better on the exercise score but all else I’m not doing so well with my diet. I’ll keep plogging along until it clicks.
1. Do you have a favorite appliance brand? I don’t know that I have a favorite, but I am not considering a Kitchenaid because that’s the newer one we have that’s given us a headache from the get-go. I’m leaning heavily toward Frigidaire. That’s the brand of our upright freezer.
2. What are the determining factors in choosing a refrigerator? A top priority is that it is made in the United States. Second, the company is not owned by a communist country, like Haier. Incidentally, I learned that they bought out GE. There goes a good solid American brand down the tube! Third, I look for the features I want in my frig. Preferably a unit that has independent controls in the refrigerated and freezer compartments. The freezer must be on top and overall depth between 26″ – 28″. Anything more makes it difficult to reach food in the back. This is really hard to find, too. I want a simple shelf layout, nothing fancy that cuts down on cold-storage possibilities like in the Frigidaire line.
This one is smaller than our old unit but I like it. The only I do not like is it doesn’t have a handle to grip, it’s the molded type which I’m not crazy about and may knock this out of the running. A trip to Sears is needed to determine if this is an issue or not.

We have had our Frigidaire for 13 years with no problems so I highly recommend them.

Every appliance we have now came from Sears. We got them about 12 years ago and still going strong–haven’t had any repairs or breakdowns yet.

If your library has Consumer Reports magazine, they are a great resource. It’s so hard to know what is reliable now.
One suggestion i have, no stainless steel appliances! As a janitor, i hate them, they are almost impossible to clean and everything leaves streaks.

We love GE Profile appliances and had our old GE Profile appliances replaced in December of 1016. We couldn’t be happier with our choices.

Thanks for the info on your GE Profile refrigerator. I’m glad you’re happy with it. We have a GE Profile washer. It’s really old and probably will need replacing before long. It’s performed generally well over the past 20+ but it’s needed minor repairs. I looked at GE’s refrigerators. The problem is I can’t find one that will slid into the space of our old unit without sticking out into the kitchen too far. I liked the dimensions of the 70s Hotpoint where’s it’s more wide than deep. The industry has changed things since those days. It’s gonna be a tough call on what we get and we won’t know for certain until we get one in the slot. All we can do is our best until we get out of this house and into another.
